CGC vs PGX : How Does it Effect the Value of Your Book?

Ойын-сауық

After buying a collection with PGX books I decided to crack them open, get them cleaned and pressed and, sent off to CGC. I also go over the values of each in the same grade.

    How does opening, cleaning and pressing give you an accurate assessment of one company vs the other? You can't clean and press between the two submissions...you have to submit them as the exact same comic in the exact same condition to understand what the real differences in the grading system are.

    100% but a book being cleaned and pressed coming back the same grade as one that wasn't shows the disparity in grading. Regardless at the end of the day the sales data shows where the value lies.

    If one company grades a uncleaned and unpressed book at a 6.0 and then AFTER a clean and press it comes back from the top tier grading company at the same grade or lower, it shows that the grading for PGX is higher for lower quality books. This means a 9.8 PGX book can have more flaws than a CGC graded 9.8 book, meaning the actual quality of the PGX book is less even though it is graded the same. As a buyer of collectibles, you want to go with a grading company that is harder to get a good grade for and is more critical of flaws in their process so when you pay $$$$ for a graded book you know its going to be worth what you paid. PGX is like the used car dealer and CGC is the Mereces-Benz dealership. Each has its place, but I know which one I trust more.

    @@VeryGaryComics actually that’s not all together true. I’ve sent books to CGC. Then had them pressed / cleaned and resubmitted. Received the same grade as before. I’ve sent books to CGC and paid for a press and I know dang well they didn’t press it cause it had the same defects as when I sent it the first time. In any case CGC is still the top dog no matter what anyone says.

    It is true that the community puts a greater value on CGC books than PGX books, mostly because people continue to claim they are better, but what you proved in this video is that the Grades were good. Your statement of a 6.0 to a 6.0 is a huge upgrade is false, its the same, and the fact that the pages got whiter with CGC begs the question of who went easier on the book. Pressings can help increase the grade, but depending upon the other defects, it may not help the grade only allow it to present better. Since both grading companies use different grading criteria, and the nature of grading is subjective, combined with this sample size being very small, nothing can be deduced on the grading front. There are many reasons to use one service over another, but they are mostly individual in nature. PGX cases are so-so at best (even their new ones) but at least the book is sealed with the label to prevent tampering. CGC cases are far nicer and if I am encapsulating for the purpose of re-selling, CGC carrying the higher resale value (regardless of the reason) is a factor. However the cost of grading, especially these more expensive books can make PGX more appealing for personal collections. I have used both services extensively, and this past year have been heavy on the PGX front for my PC books. At the same time I have a big shipment going out to CGC shortly of books I do not anticipate holding . Having said all that, I enjoyed the video and content.

    I agree. I think this is probably my most dislikes video of his. I’m not saying he is biased.... but... yeah. Seen a LOT of videos with the same conversation and comparing going on here. Same results. I think people love CGC because of value. That’s it. Comic collectors with little money can use PGX. Why are people so quick to bash? It’s like someone is getting paid... no saying Gary is but I feel a lot do.

    @@sirpuss5887 I could not agree more! I send books off to PGX all the time. They are cheaper and Turn around time is faster that CGC and there new cases are nice to. Granted all the books stay in my PC so I’m not worried bout resale value

  • @AutomaticComics

    PGX is also notorious for missing restoration. That’s one of the biggest issues. You can’t trust that their books are actually unrestored. If one of those books had come back purple, that’s a huge loss. Honestly you’re probably better off not sending it anywhere and just keeping it raw than sending to PGX. You can still present the book fine and it would actually be easier to sell raw than in a PGX slab.

  • @Mike_oliver1313

    @Mike_oliver1313

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@AutomaticComics honestly I disagree if i am having books graded for my PC and no intention of ever selling them than how am I better off keeping them Raw? I’ve never had nothing but great experience with pgx when sending my books in and as pointed out in the above video the grades are comparable so only resellers want it in CGC Not PGX. That’s not me

  • @AutomaticComics

    @AutomaticComics

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@Mike_oliver1313 Everyone gets to manage their collection in their own way. So if you want to get your books graded at PGX that’s completely up to you. I just don’t see the point in paying to have you book graded by them when that process actually decreases its value. Even if you don’t want to sell your books today, you might want to in the future. Or you might want to trade with someone. And believe me, as someone that sells books, PGX books are hard to move. Even CBCS books are much harder to move than CGC. So if I’m going to be paying for something, why not pay for the one that gives me the best overall return in the end?

    First off I just want to say I legit JUST found your channel right now due to this video and I enjoyed it & enjoyed your rundown so I will definitely be subbing. However when it comes to the grading/selling aspect of things, It’s a lot easier to sell a CGC graded book vs selling a PGX book because people just blindly choose “industry standards” I’ve seen PGX grade much harsher in many occasions in the past so I’m not TOO impressed seeing this comparison go the other way. As far as the easily openable case I understand why many might deem that as a bad look however when you really think about it it’s a good thing in the sense of it being handled easier by sellers, retailers etc to send them in for re-grading or whatever the case maybe. If & When I send out books to get graded & encapsulated I do it exclusively for display purposes and because I’m not thinking of flipping it for money so it would make sense for ME to get them graded by a company that really SEALS the case better, but for someone trying to grade the book to flip it I see it as a GOOD thing for the case to open SOMEWHAT easily, but that’s just my humble opinion. Great work with the content and channel & I look forward to watching more of your work in the near future, blessings & love to YOU and the entire community here.
