CFMOTO 800 NK | Chris' First Ride

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Chad's recent ride on the CFMOTO 450 MT sparked our interest in the Chinese brand, so Chris has spent some time on the 800 NK, he also looks for answers to some of the questions we all have.

My friend has a 2018ish NK650 which he got used for 4K, it’s been good for 80,000kms except for the rear brake pad starting to wear prematurely against the disc, which we can’t seem to fix And he’s crashed it hard quite a few times, it’s the bike that refuses to die tho

Great review as always. I bought my CF MOTO 800 MT Touring from Bike Sanctuary in September 2023. And I can say hand on heart it’s a great bike. Now over 3000 miles. Just returned from a 4 day trip to Lake District over 800 miles. The bike is so comfortable, I was doing even 6 hours in the saddle and still no problems. No issues so far. Best value for money!

Bought my 800MT quite recently. Probably not the target market, fireblade owner, mid 30’s, was looking for something to go 2 up in more comfort basically. Brilliant value for money and was a better bike than the transalp judging from test rides. Really happy so far, amazing spec for the money, plus £1500 worth of hard luggage thrown in for free!

The issue for me isn't it being Chinese per se, it's that the company will be contributing, through their taxes, to the horrific regime in China. The quality needs to stand up on its own, as does the warranty and dealer network etc but where possible, for this reason alone, I avoid Chinese stuff whilst understanding that I cannot avoid it completely If it was Russian made I suspect we'd feel a bit different about it eh?

I take it you have never been to China? Is this the reason for your ignorance or is it more simply you are Sinophobia? Do you know where I-Phones are made? Are these of poor quality and inferior to other phone manufactures? I own a Xiaomi phone, this is as good if not better tan an I-Phone for half the price. Chinese manufactures will make a product to the specification and price the customer is willing to pay. Don't go and expect to pay peanuts because all you will get...... Whatever the reason, you need to trying leaving your own back garden, you may find that what you are told by the media can not always be trusted! There is a supplier if brake calliper repair kits who buys all the seals from China and the repacks them and sells. He is doing a great business. I now this because in the past he knew I was travelling to China and asked me to source some new suppliers for him. I would very much doubt that this is just an isolated example. Just ask yourself next time you buy something from a UK suppliers where did they source these items/parts? If you are referring to the Uyghurs people? There are I think 58 distinct ethnic groups in China. Why would China persecute the Uyghurs people and not the other ethnic groups? China is aware of some very radical Muslim groups, who have went into a primary school and killed many children, another deliberately drove a car at high speed in Tiananmen Square again killing many. Have you ever heard of these incidents? China is not alone when it comes to fear of terrorists. All over the world Countries are actively placing intervention procedures and terrorist Laws to counter act possible terrorists. To make a sweeping statement just like you have, only goes to show your ignorance, lack of education or just simple racism!

As soon as I saw the 800NK in it's pre production guise and I did a ton of research on them. More I learnt about them and the brand I fell in love with it more and more. When it came to the UK I sold my Triumph 1200 explorer and bought an ex demo 800NK sport. I had test ridden the advanced but didn't like the screen. So I bought my 23 plate ex demo at only 244 miles and it was a grand off the new price and had already had its first service and software update so I thought bargain. I have a ton of really decent aftermarket stuff from AliExpress on my bike and it looks the mutts nuts. I love the quality so far as I ride all year round and in all weathers as it's my main mode of transport. I bought mine from the place you visited and they were brilliant and Ben was very knowledgeable about the brand etc. I think CFMOTO are a brand to watch. I think it's a great bike for the price and I love riding my 800NK.

Amazing review!! I got my CFMoto 800NK Advanced couple of months back, and completely love it, I am near to 8000km with it, I took it on couple of long trips (from belgium to germany) and super good, confortable, the power delivery is amazing is a super fun bike and really pretty to the point people stop me to ask about the bike, in biker meetings many people complain about reliability, but really, not issues at all the bike feels like the first day I took it out from the dealership. I bought it for 8K (with 5 year warranty) in May and now is worth 9K (after it won "Best looking motorcycle of the year 2024") I expect it will get even more expensive because the CFMoto Team is killing it in MOTO3

Check out autotrader for used prices. There are plenty to look at, especially 800mt Vs KTM 890s etc. CF Motos lose about the same % as the established brands over time but because they are cheaper to start with it costs you less. Residual value is a tactic used by the expensive brands to trick you into spending more. Your 2 year old KTM 890 might be worth more than a similar age cfmoto but the difference from new will be greater. I did this exercise a few weeks back and many others agreed. The example then was a Voge 300 Vs Honda CRF 300. The Voge lost about £1k from new then prices dropped slowly. The CRF prices dropped 1.5-2k in the same period and then continued to fall to a similar price to the Voge. In 'depreciation from new' the Honda's were generally twice as expensive, more so if you needed parts as the Voge parts were much more sensibly priced than Honda's.

Ive got a 2019 650NK that I bought new. Bike is fine, just really unrefined and heavy. Fork bearing is also clacking like crazy already and it sometimes idle at 3-4k RPM. Wanted to trade it for the new 800MT but that also felt refined and the quickshifter was just about useless. But the worst is being looked down at by every other bikey (including dealers) as they just won't take you seriously unless you have one of the big names. I've been riding for 20 years but always feel so out of place with the bike.

wouldn't surprise me if cfmoto stops manufacturing the 650NK. it's just worse in every way than the 800NK. less power, less tech, and somehow a whopping 17kg heavier too. and if you want something smaller, there's the 450 SR/NK. which is 33kg!! lighter.

The reference to the Japanese bikes isn't really valid because they turned up with very high quality bikes pretty much from the start. Most of our exposure to Chinese bikes so far has been cheap, thrown together tat which has the obvious effect of making people assume thats what to expect. I'm still not seeing quality to match Japanese bikes but there is a big difference between a modern CF moto and the 10+yr old 125's most of us remember falling apart at the side of the road. As I see them now they are a bit low rent but they are also lower priced. Not the top end stuff but not the top end prices either. How well they last, resale and real longevity are to be seen. That glued - on Ipad is trash but that can be said of many modern bike "dashboards". As for the electronics - thats a modern bike problem too and the only reason I never got a superduke R is because they wanted me to pay a ransom to unlock the electronic nannys already on the bike - meaning I would be paying for systems I never wanted then paying again to turn them off. So far thats three generations I've not bothered with and I will continue not to buy them until they stop that nonsense. It will be interesting to see how these go. I feel like its unlikely to last as well as an NC750 for example but considering KTM's reputation for having issues I wouldn't be surprised if it could get close to or match them - of course when there's an expensive issue the KTM being a more valuable bike may swing weather it gets fixed or not though. Congratulations on the ad money too, Chris. Pretty much every tester has taken that envelope now so it must be decent. You can tell us what you really think after the long-termer goes back in a years' time with 10k miles on it. ;)

Saw a white one in a showroom with triumphs and ducs, and it stood out - beautiful IMO. I was really kind of enthralled. Pretty sure it is a Kiska design - they did a really good job. My question is how much leeway does cfmoto have/take to deal with the 790/890 flaws that KTM seems to have no interest in. Can they source their own parts, can they institute independent quality control, can they change poor engineering decisions? Inquiring minds want to know. One thing it lacks, curiously - as the 500 version has it - is traction control. Hope they do a software update for that.

CFMoto Builds the KTM 790 Duke and Adventure for KTM. The 790 went away for a few years and came back this year, 100% built by CFMoto. If you read whats new for the 2024 790's it states "Heavier Cams for smoother operation" which is KTM for "our bad, having cams made of construction paper is great for fast revs but bad for reliability" . Also CFMoto Builds every single Kawasaki 650 parallel twin.. you know the one that's been in the Ninja 650, Vulcan S, Versys 650 for over a decade. CFMoto even bored it out, the 650 engine to make it a 700cc and put it in the CFMoto CL-X bike they sell. They also put the normal 650 in the 650NK, it's the same 650 engine they build for Kawasaki. I wish CFMoto would advertise these facts, it would comfort most people to know these things. Especially the Kawasaki 650 engine, everybody raves about how reliable that engine is... And Kawasaki never even built it. I even owned a 2015 Ninja 650, it was a fantastic engine for power and reliability.. And the whole time it was made by CFMoto and I never even knew it until recently.

I wonder if the CF Moto is going to have the same camshaft issues as the KTM 790/890? Out of 6 of us that have KTM 790/890 adventures, 3 have had camshaft failures. The other 3 have not had their valve covers off yet, but I expect those will have wear. KTM and dealers have had mostly horrible responses to the issue. First response is to polish the cams which does nothing. Basically it is to mask the problem until it becomes catastrophic and at that point it is out of warranty. Next response is to say the air box is full of dust and it’s the owners fault they did not change the paper airfilter multiple times during an offroad ride. How dust in the airbox wipes out the camshafts is beyond me. One friend is in litigation with KTM. 8k miles and the camshafts are toast. He pulled off the valve cover just to see how the camshafts looked and found they were damaged. Contacted the dealer and they yelled at him for looking at the camshafts! They accused him of being on a witch hunt!!! They wanted to charge him $600 to do a diagnostic for something that is obviously an issue. Then blamed him for dust ingestion. They polished his camshafts and tried to send him on his way. He then contacted KTM North America to help resolve the issue. I also contacted KTM North America and was told not to believe social media. Well, 3 of the 6 bikes I know of have an issue. KTM North America promised my friend help and then backed out. It’s such a crappy situation. I’d stay clear of the 790/890 engines, they have a serious design flaw and KTM /CF Moto needs to make this right.

CF Moto seems to understand how to build a nice looking motorcycle with dual headlights, and simple body lines. Simple things are always more beautiful, but only Triumph, Royal Enfield, CF Moto, Kove, and Moto Morini, got the memo. The rest of the companies are churning out bizarre contraptions that don't resemble motorcycles. In terms of aesthetics (probably the most important thing on a motorcycle) we are in the dark ages of motorcycling. There are so many bikes on the market right now that aren't even candidates for ownership, because of their horrific angular styling, something more akin to a stage prop or kids toy.
