Dieter Brock said he found it harder to play QB in the CFL for reasons you cite -- i.e. you need a strong arm to chuck the ball across the field; also the extra man made a difference. As a CFL fan who remembers sitting in the end zone in Winnipeg with my dad in -25 degree weather as a kid (I worshipped the Blue Bombers) it's nice to see the league gets the props it deserves.

The CFL has had an influence on the American game more than people realize. On the plus side, the birth of the zone blitz defense started in Canada. On the negative: the run and shoot offense. What people don't really understand is that both games require slightly different skill sets. CFL players have to be faster and able to cover bigger areas whilst NFL players generally have to be bigger.

Great video, thank you. I particularly liked the comment on that "beast" of a throw to the wide side of the field (CFL fields are 65 yards wide [!]). In fact, the standard for adequate/good arm strength for a QB in the CFL has always been: "Can he hit a receiver running an out pattern to the wide side of the field? And can he throw it "on a rope" (i.e., with no arc) in doing so?" Because if he can't, it's a pick for 6 the other way!

One factor: the CFL’s 2023 salary cap IIRC is $5.35 million Canadian … *per team*. Minimum salaries are $70K Canadian. If CFL finances can get those salaries to triple, and that someone like, say, Aaron Rodgers doesn’t make more than an entire CFL conference’s roster, maybe that could lessen the talent gap.

CFL is basically smaller players and more passing. As an example, the record for "single game passing yards" for NFL is Norm Van Brocklin with 554 yards in 1951. In the CFL it is Matt Dunigan with 713 yard in 1994 - it was an amazing performance. (second best is Anthony Calvillo with 551 in the same year) I don't think either record will ever be broken.

A CFL quarterback has to read the play from both sides of the ball each passing down. Vision is critical and something any QB coming from the US game has to learn and adjust to. Also the ability to move out of the pocket and essentially regroup, throw on the run and read the reaction of your receivers. Offenses are just as complex in the CFL but the QB has to be able to think on the move more as does his receivers and the entire offense.

I’m interested in knowing how 12 (not 11) players affects the playbooks. 12 players means balanced offensive formations - no tight end - and four receivers: two wides and two slots. It also means a five-man secondary: two corners, two safeties and one “center field” safety. A CFL quarterback thus has four receivers and a dozen extra yards of field width to play with than an NFL one, but he also has to face an extra defensive back. I’d love to hear a discussion between CFL and NFL coordinators about the different structural nuances because of that extra player.

Although there is a high chance of getting a yard in the CFL when the defense has to be a yard off the line of scrimmage I have seen teams waste all 3 downs trying to get a yard (generally because the end zone was a yard away) and turn over the ball.

Hey JT, I just watched your NFL Films and NFL Europe videos and I would like to know, how is it to be a low round pick or UDFA in the league? Do you think they get less opportunities or are somehow overlooked? Many of them become reliable starters or even stars. Is there something wrong with their evaluation process or they just get better after college? Do you think you deserved more chances to play? Thanks!

I just find the CFL game to be a much funner game to watch. NFL just seems to be run run pass kick and CFL is run pass kick so it makes for a game with much more passing & kicking involved. The only thing I can say I prefer about the NFL is that they have actual women cheerleaders whereas the CFL are mostly very young women just over the age of 18. The only other thing would be crowd size & the amount of teams due to the difference in population in the 2 countries. The number one drawback in the CFL is that they have 5 teams in West & only 4 in the East which has always made it easier for the teams in the East to make the playoffs. Why they don't just create another team in the East is beyond me. Quebec could easily support another team. CFL has B.C., Edmonton & Calgary in Alberta, Saskatchewan & Winnipeg in the West and Toronto, Hamilton, & Ottawa in Ontario with Montreal in Quebec which are in the East, Quebec could easily support another team to equalize the divisions. The only other thing I could recommend to give it a proper & fair balance would be to have them all play one another 3 times with the top 8 making the playoffs regardless of the division they are in. Playoffs could be: 8th playing 1st, 7th playing 2nd, 6th playing 3rd and 5th playing 4th with only one team eliminated at the end of the season as opposed to the 3 that are eliminated presently. So each team would play 24 season games which could easily be done as well. Who would get the extra home game could be determined by on how they faired against one another in the previous season. This would create an opportunity for much better revenue for the CFL teams as well so the players could be paid a bit better than they presently are.

They wanted to put another team in the East, particularly the Maritime provinces, but haven’t gotten a solid ownership group. (COVID also pushed any expansion back a few years.) Quebec City is another option. The eternal issue with expansion is Canadian demographics. Like Australia, it’s a large land mass with only a handful of major metropolitan centers spread far apart. The country’s population is also modest; it’s got a million fewer people than California (38 million vs 39 million). The league’s already in the country’s biggest markets (if you count the Riders representing the entire province and not just Regina).

@@dwaynekeenum1916 oh ok good to know. Still think it would be a great idea. They could shorten the nfl season and then the winners of the cfl and nfl could have a home and away series, most points out of the two games wins. I think it will do numbers and both countries can root for each other and travel to support just like world cup

@@logophile2504 although it will never happen, I LOVE this idea! Maybe if a smaller league (see XFL, AFL, or Arena) can make it for more than a season the champions of said league could rep the U.S. It would be a cool set of games for fans AND give more tape/chances for NFL scouts to check out talent. Nice post, dude!

I'm a Canadian and love the CFL but the honest truth is the two leagues are not similar regarding talent. A superbowl winning team against a grey cup winning team would be a slaughter. For example when the NFL makes it's roster cuts, the CFL has a busy day of signings and a lot of those guys become starters in the CFL. And when guys dominate in the CFL and get at chance at the NFL they become depth players instead of stars (Warren Moon being the exception). But even Warren won 5 grey cups in 6 years and never won a Superbowl.

  • @rolmodel12.

@@elguero9279 Don't forget about Jeff Garcia and Doug Flutie. Both were Pro Bowler's in the NFL. But, yeah, the point is still the same: there is a gap in the talent level. That's why I suggested the lesser leagues to represent the States. I bet the Grey Cup winner's could even win a two game series, but it would certainly be more competitive either way. And fun/neat to see. It will never happen, but I think it's a creative idea- and it's fun to daydream 🤷🏼‍♂️

Different games. Different rules, and way different style. Star players from CFL go down south and lots barely make practice squads. On flip side, nfl players have signed with CFL teams, think they're gonna tear up the league, and get cut during training camp.

Just an idea, yeah, but that first Seattle-BC Lions game in Husky Stadium would’ve been a blast.
