I absolutely love the CFL, grew up with it, understand the way the game is played is so good. Many people don’t understand football and always compared to the NFL. The NFL has billions of dollars in a massive market to promote their product. They definitely have to increase the Fanbase, I had some ideas to help out over the years at the grassroots level. Really hard to get a hold of someone to be able to help build. Just imagine all those Grey cup games that were wicked, right to the last minute. 🇨🇦

The Atlantic Schooners should start up in Moncton temporarily to emphasize themselves as a regional team. The Carolina Panthers did this by playing their first season in Clemson, South Carolina before their current stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina was ready. Or when the Green Bay Packers used to play 2 games a year in Milwaukee to cement themselves as a team for all of Wisconsin. As far as I'm aware, the Schooner's Ownership is already in charge of organizing Touchdown Atlantic games

Rochester is Buffalo Bills (NFL) territory. There is zero interest in Canadian football in Rochester. There is a soccer stadium near downtown Rochester that currently does not have a team, but even if this field might be big enough for the CFL style game there is just no interest.

The largest stadium/arena in Alaska is Sullivan Stadium in Anchorage, population 300,000+, which was built as a multipurpose arena. It has a seating capacity of 6,490 for hockey but of up to 8,800 for concerts.

Victoria games would be played on Sunday afternoons to attract fans from the entire region. Weekend promotions from tail gating to discount hotel rates and dining would make it an Islander summer/fall event. Sponsorship and stadium are the big hurdles. BC's Okanagan should be considered too?

I think the Island is a huge market! If they had a team, I would definitely come out from Vancouver to see games. The Okanagan would be a good market too, but in theory somebody from the Okanagan could go home after a Lions game. If you are from Victoria, there is no way to go home after a 7pm Lions game. Those pesky ferries. Maybe I should do a video dedicated to CFL in BC.

Great video. Halifax and Quebec City should be top favourites for an expansion team. For a 12th team, Victoria sounds good, as well as Okanagan. But I was always thinking about Anchorage. Anchorage doesn't have any pro sports team, they are more close to Canada than US and I've heard they love CFL. I know they currently dont have a stadium, but Alaska is one of the richest states in America and I think team in Anchorage cojld get lot of sponsorship money from their oil industry. That would make the CFL a true northern league. Maybe also team in St. Louis. Many former Rams fans wanted a team in CFL after the Rams moved to LA. Plus, it would be great for the league to move some of their regular season games to smaller cities, like Whitehorse, Yellowknife, Thunder Bay, maybe even Iqualuit, same as AFL and NRL are doing just to promote the game.

  • @Fatblue246

St louis would be hard to contest as it has an XFL team already playing there and the XFL overlaps heavily with the CFL scheduling wise. It is also one of the markets for the NFL to be most likely to return to so it is pretty unlikely a CFL team would thrive/ be able to compete. That and the fact that the rules differences make for a game that is pretty unpalatable to most Americans. When you have as many options for viewership as the NFL, XFL, USFL, AND College Football before the CFL even enters the game, it makes for a hard sell. This isn't even mentioning the myriad of other minor league football leagues that exist in the US such as the AFL etc.

You said that the Argos decided to go to the smaller venue at BMO Field. That isn't correct. Rogers Centre(owned by Rogers Communication that also owns the Blue Jays) kicked them out by giving the Argos lousy home dates and lied they wanted to install natural grass. They hired a botanist(for $200,000) from Univ. of Guelph to examine if it was practical. As this was being evaluated, Rogers said that Football would ruin the turf for Baseball. Nothing came out of the UoG study. The Argos were sent packing. As the Blue Jays installed Field Turf instead of grass. The Soccer people(Toronto FC, owned by MLSE, later bought the Argos from David Braley at a later date) at BMO Field didn't wanted the Argos there, citing the same excuse, but had to concede because the property sat on Toronto City area. I think the CFL should expand back into the US markets, but vet the prospective CFL owners more intensely. The US owners in the first attempt were shady. The CFL was so desperate for money, they gave a franchise to anybody whose cheque cleared. The CFL should go into markets bear the Canada/US Border that are lack pro football and respect Canadian Football rule, regulations and culture. The CFL should go to places like Fargo ND, Columbus, Ohio or St. Louis Mo. (they's support pro football after Stan Kroenke took their team away from the city. But expansion happens in a COVID-19 free world. All sports team will have to play at little fan attendance or none at all. The CFL is at a serious concern situation. O hope that they cam bounce back. I prefer the CFL game over the NFL type

Thank you for your comment, I prefer the CFL game too and hope it can be preserved. Yes there are a lot of politics in Toronto when it comes to sports venues, I wanted to keep it simple for this video, maybe another video I can go into detail. I don't like how the Argos have the most history in the city, yet they are the afterthought. The province essentially just gave the Skydome to the Blue Jays, leaving the Argos to get punted around... Fargo would be great, a good regional rivalry possibility with the Western teams. St Louis of course because they lost their NFL Team, but the big issue is the field size and finding a place suitable. Part of what makes the CFL game is the big field

@@secondsports9927 If a US team wants a CFL, they can use soccer stadiums located in MLS areas or colleges that have soccer programs. If it is requires that they can't fit a CFL dimensions, than go with what they have as long as the playing field is 150 x 65 yards, the end zones can be shortened. They might have problems scoring in their own stadium. I recommended that they could use baseball parks to the other poster here said about Detroit. It would be a tight fit, but doable. Just schedule CFL games when the Tigers play away from home You could put teams in Chicago, Buffalo and Milwaukee. A CFL team could play in Soldier Field because the Bears don't own that stadium, they'd have no say on preventing a CFL to play. Chicago at one time had two football teams there. Buffalo could play at the University of Buffalo, instead of the "Ralph" and Milwaukee could play in Miller Stadium, baseball park. Milwaukee would need a team of their own despite the popularity of the Packers ib that state. Forget San Diego and Oakland, even though they don't a NFL team there and a sensible choice for a CFL. It's too far for travel. It would be costly for teams like Edmonton and Montreal I'm not confident about Halifax. The Nova Scotia Province doesn't seem to want to invest in a stadium. They CFL should award the CFL franchise to Moncton until a stadium gets built in the province. Gov't change, money allocations change. The CFL should have Arena Football teams associated with their franchises. It could be used to develop it's rookie, draftees and global players. It would also keep the brands aware during the off-season when the NHL plays. There is no Arena Football anymore. So why not? Sorry for the long post, but I love my CFL. Be Safe Second Sport

I do agree with expansion to the US. They messed up the first time and should have done near the border like you mentioned. The league missed a chance back then to put a team in Portland before John Candy died, and Syracuse looked like an area worth trying, and could work today. Los Angeles could have worked after the Rams and Raiders left, but that would have been my only expansion that was outside near the border. And your thought on St. Louis today could work.

It’s close to Texas, they have a great brand new stadium where Monterrey fc plays, and they have a huge population that is heavily concentrated in the actual city and not even far away. Realistically, anything beyond Quebec and Halifax/Moncton (one of the latter, not both) is pie in the sky. No other Canadian market or region has a workable combination of size and fan interest. Anchorage? It would join the CFL as its 2nd smallest market, with the closest opponent almost 2,000 miles away. And it's not like Americans are clamouring (should I write "clamoring"?) for Canadian football -- although I like the thought of a team named the Alaska Icebergs.

Btw, if Victoria had a CFL team, would the BC Lions have to be renamed the Vancouver Lions? Same with Saskatoon having a team causing the Roughriders be named Regina instead. Halifax would make 10 teams, maybe 12 would be the capping point in Canada anyway. Quebec City is better off with NHL team, as it would be less encroaching to Montreal than the CFL. Windsor is my favourite Ontario idea as it is far enough from Golden Horseshoe, unlike K-W and London, and close to Detroit, as long as the stadium is in Canada.

I'm with you -- Quebec would unquestionably be the CFL's best expansion bet. The city is twice the size of Halifax, has been a football hotbed for 25 years, has a stadium that could be expanded to CFL standards with minimal difficulty, and is a regional hub. The Alouettes would have to sign off on a team ending their provincial monopoly -- but I don't believe this would be an impossible sell. Fans in La Vieille Capitale may watch Als games on TV, but they don't make up more than a smattering of ticket-buyers at Molson Stadium. Imagine a new tradition of the Als and Citadelles (!) matching up in Quebec every year on the Sunday before Labour Day . . .

@@liamsmith4566 Edmonton won't build a new stadium unless there is a opportunity for another major prestige athletics competition they could hold (e.g. Summer Olympics, Commonwealth Games, etc.). City of Edmonton blew its sports venue budget for the next 20 years. All of the money is tied up in Rogers Place for the NHL Edmonton Oilers. Besides, Commonwealth Stadium is still pretty adequate for the needs of the Edmonton Esk-...(sorry, I meant Football Team) Calgary won't get a new football stadium as McMahon Stadium is owned by the University of Calgary. U of C would much rather operate McMahon Stadium until it falls apart, rather than spend money for a new stadium. The only way there would be a new stadium constructed is if the City of Calgary and Province of Alberta took part of the construction costs. Considering how difficult the negotiations were between City of Calgary and the Calgary Flames were regarding a replacement arena for the Saddledome, the chances of a replacement football/soccer/athletics stadium being built are mighty slim at this time. And they still haven't begun construction of the new arena. Who knows what the current construction costs are, compared to the costs they negotiated, taking two years of threats and back-and-forth negotiations to finally come up with a deal that the Flames, the City of Calgary, and the Province of Alberta could swallow.

Toronto to London is quite doable. Victoria and Quebec yes! I agree The Interior is under represented in sports, and I actually think it would help the Lions to have another team in BC. It would boost support for the sport in general. If you live in Kamloops or Kelowna, you can go to a Lions game and go home afterwards. You can't do that if you live in Victoria, because of those ferries. I live in Vancouver and will drive home after an evening game in Seattle. 3 Teams in BC would be doable, but good luck selling the Lions on that idea.

Moncton Stadium can easily serve as their home stadium, if you removed the track and lower the bowl to at least 25,000 proper, with of course possible expansion for when Moncton ends up hosting the Grey Cup. Expand to Quebec City if they get a much needed new stadium, perhaps as part of their Winter Olympic aspirations. Furthermore, it will create a huge rivalry between Montreal and Quebec City to the point where the Olympic Stadium might be used more often. Halifax is expected, if they have a stadium built in time of expansion. Forget stuff like going back to the US or Mexico City, that just isn't happening. Keep it Canadian. 12 teams is a good expansion with maybe Victoria, Windsor etc in the pipeline.

London is far enough away from Hamilton that it wouldn't significantly poach on its fans, If you can make a go with a 20-25,000 person stadium, which apparently works there. Nine teams just doesn't work. 10 does, especially as a new eastern team would balance 5 vs 5. It would be good to have more teams to play. This reminds me of the original IRFU pre-CFL days in the 1950s. Only a 4 team league. They didn't normally play western teams in the regular season until 1961 if you can believe it. Must have gotten boring playing the same 3 teams I think 4-5 times per year. Like the original six NHL but worse.

Victoria residents complained that the commonwealth games temporary stadium at the university of Victoria was too large and an eye sore with little or no parking outside ring road at the university. After the common wealth games the stadium was taken down leaving the field for university recreational use only. The alternative stadium downtown Victoria would have the same issues. Local fan bases support university or community sports and have failed to attract an AHL or minor league hockey team even with the Save on Foods Center. Funny you should bring up metric dimensions. I recall reading a plan to modify every field in Canada to 60 x 100 metres, with 20-metre end zones (their imperial depth at that time was 25 yards, not 20). It still would have been a 3-down game, with offences needing to advance 10 metres instead of 10 yards, and defences playing a metre off the ball. Can't remember who published it -- might have been the federal government (this was in the early years of metric conversion)-- but, obviously, the plan was never realized. Don't know if the prospect of needing an extra yard for a first down was too radical, or if the cost and inconvenience of redoing fields, measuring chains, etc., was more trouble than it was worth.

The original team was known as the Tigers -- but when it suspended operations in 1941 (due to most of its players enlisting in World War II), the rival Ontario Rugby Football Union stepped into the void with the addition of a franchise called the Wildcats. The Tigers came back in 1945, and predictably, both teams struggled for fan support. The unwieldy rivalry was ended with a merger that resulted in today's Ticats.

There isn't a fan in the country who thinks the biggest problem facing the CFL is a shortage of covered stadiums. Could be interesting this year, though. The pandemic necessitated a late start to the season, so it's extending to mid-December -- with the Western final somewhere on the Prairies (probably Winnipeg) on Dec. 5.
