CFD simulation of a bullet fired

Ғылым және технология

CFD simulation of a bullet fired from gun barrel. Bullet motion is computed by integrating the aerodynamic forces.
Computation has been done with OpenFoam at GDTech in Belgium.

    One tip: provide scale if possible. Velocity, pressure and temperature are all great, but the viewer doesn't know to what extent

    Bullet will have shock in-front of it. Based on shape of bullet bow shock or oblique shock. Shocks are sharp discontinuities. I think this is not modeled in the simulation

    This simulation is incorrect. During the pressure field example we can clearly see the round just barely exceeding the speed of sound. However the pressure wave from the gas escaping the barrel is still clearly outrunning the round.

    Wow, so the bullets slows down right at the edge of a muzzle only to speed up again when it leaves it? Is it a glitch or is that really the physics of it?

  • @mrstrawhat9227

    It makes sense. As the bullet travels through the barrel I imagine theres a vacuum effect pulling it back that would get stronger the further down the barrel it travels.

  • @Puleczech

    @Puleczech

    Жыл бұрын

    @@mrstrawhat9227 Did not think of the vacuum, makes sense. But why it speeds up again? Does it get eventually pushed by air rushing in to fill the vacuum creating a shockwave when it fills up the muzzle?

    this isn't taking the barrel crown into consideration? the profile of the barrel muzzle is very important for accuracy, why you should not shove a cleaning rod down a barrel from the muzzle end if you ask 5 different gunsmiths about crown profile, you'll get 10 different answers!
