Cessna 172 Toronto To Cornwall - Testing The ElectroAir Electronic Ignition

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Toronto To Cornwall - Testing The ElectroAir Electronic Ignition
In this aviation adventure, join me as I take my aircraft, a Cessna 172 with the call sign Fox Mike Victor Uniform, on a journey to Cornwall. The day starts with the chilly weather, prompting me to skip the usual intro and head straight to the plane for a warm-up.
As we taxi and prepare for takeoff, I share some technical details about the electronic ignition system recently installed in the aircraft, highlighting its advantages over traditional magnetos. Throughout the flight, I meticulously note performance numbers, such as fuel burn, RPM, and true airspeed, comparing them to pre-upgrade data.
Flying over familiar landscapes and reminiscing about childhood memories on an island, I discuss the significance of tracking flight data using tools like Savvy Aviation and CloudAhoy. The journey takes us over the Thousand Islands region, where the border between Canada and the United States meanders through countless islands.
While enjoying the scenic views, I provide updates on the Trio autopilot system and a recent enhancement with a Dynon ARINC module. Though basic functionality is currently engaged, I eagerly anticipate a firmware update for seamless integration between Trio and Dynon, promising a more advanced autopilot system.
Approaching Cornwall airport, I capture the landing process, highlighting the airport's bustling activity, reasonable fuel prices, and a quick pit stop for a sweet treat. After refuelling, we depart for the return journey to my home base at Oshawa airport, discussing the flight's key takeaways and the overall success of the electronic ignition system.
Upon landing, I express my satisfaction with the system's flawless performance, emphasizing its reliability and the long-term cost savings it offers. As the adventure concludes, I plan to review the collected data, crunch the numbers, and share the insights on fuel efficiency achieved with the new electronic ignition system.
Thank you for joining me on this aviation journey, and I look forward to sharing more adventures with you soon. Safe skies!

    Be interesting to see the comparison for fuel burn in summertime. As soon as you said you were feeling cold at the start, wondered how much effect volumetric efficiency was going to play. Great you are honing in on the data on your investment! Love the information blocks you put up for radio comms and general info as you fly. Fantastic slick way of keeping us in the loop :)

    Hey Glen, thanks for sharing the process of testing the new electronic ignition. Did you notice any performance differences, particularly in climb out and take off? It’s pretty impressive how low of an airspeed you get MVU off the ground at. Shame that the FAA doesn’t want us to have your STOL kit down here!

  • @GlensHangar

    @GlensHangar

    6 ай бұрын

    MVU seems to get up to speed / off the ground a little bit quicker, if I really wanted to be aggressive with the short field takeoff I could rotate at 35 mph into ground effect. But before I can definitively give numbers I'll have to collect more data. I'm pretty sure the FAA granted an STC for the WingX extensions earlier this year, you should check with them.

    That was an enjoyable flight, Glen! Thanks for taking us along. The new ignition system seems happy! I believe Honda used similar "double spark" ignition on some of their motorcycle engines - my 750 Four has that feature. It may have been a way for them to simplify the system, but added the benefit of cleaner combustion, which I'm not sure they expected, back in the 1960s. LOL Best wishes to you!

    Here’s another 👍🏻 for the info blocks. I’m sure it adds to your editing time but we appreciate the effort and info. Random question: any logic behind why Canadian airport codes start with Y?

  • @GlensHangar

    @GlensHangar

    6 ай бұрын

    'Yes' there is logic to why some Canadian airport codes start with a Y... Indicates that Yes the airport has a weather station, if there isn't a weather station like at Edenvale (CNV8), then the identifier starts with another letter.

  • @GlensHangar

    @GlensHangar

    6 ай бұрын

    0º - 20º is 'allowed' in the POH of this model of 172 - when I first learned in a later 172 model, I was told to never go beyond 10º. But long before I got my license I worked in the bush of Northern Canada and spent a lot of time being flown into / out of the bush - all of those pilots used 20º. I'm still working out what is best under different conditions - the wing extensions, STOL cuff and VGs changed the flight characteristics of this plane by a wide margin. Reality is: at Oshawa 0º flaps for take-off would be just fine. No real hurry to get off the ground there.
