I bought a pair new , never heard of Cerwin Vega(I was 16). I loved them, but my neighbors complained, but you had to play them LOUD. I finally gave in and sold them, for MORE than I paid for them to a famous mtorcycle club, for one of their clubhouses, and they loved them. I was using Carver 250wpc amps and let them use one. It was night and day diggerence with plenty of headroom from the amp. I regret selling them to this day. but like you said, us old farts want our youth back and have a concert in our house!! Good Memories, especially with their built in EQ.

LOVED my D-9s. Wish I still had them. Went into debt to buy them when I was a teenager. Drove them with a pair of NAD 2100s, each bridged to mono. They had the potential to get as loud as you wanted. I filled a few gymnasiums with that sound. Man they were fun.

Same with my Bill Fitzmaurice PA speakers in a detached bedsit. The two 12" ported subwoofers can't keep up at full tilt, though by that point I'm worried about my ears, so isn't listened to past a couple of seconds of "hear how loud it gets"

There are so many reasons to like these and a lot less not to. Really wish Cerwin would bring back so vintage gear.

These speakers can get loud enough to break your eardrums yet sound great at the same time. Only drawback is foam rot. I don't understand why they don't use rubber surrounds. Also the only speakers i know of that are more efficient than these are klipschorns. These d9s can get loud with only 10 watts.

My dad has 4 D-9s stacked in his basement that he bought new in 1985. Funny enough he also has a pair of Klipschorns down there that he bought in 1988. It can get unbelievably loud down there if you crank them up but they also play nicely at a comfortable listening volume.

My fraternity had these hanging on the wall in the 80's. They had shelves anchored to the wall reinforced by chains. For parties we'd pull out the Yamaha integrated amp that was way underpowered for the volume we'd listen to them. They'd be clipping like crazy and popping a lot of fuses. Some idiot put tinfoil in place of the fuses when we ran out of fuses and blew them. We had to send them out for repairs. I liked them and bought a set of D7's for myself. The 9's were just too big. I actually preferred the sound of the 7's. They sounded more balanced. I still own my D7's after 35 years and they still have the original surrounds. I have upgraded crossover parts, binding posts and internal wiring. I can use my high end speaker cables with spade connectors now. It's funny hooking them up to thousands of dollars worth of electronics. I think they sound great!

I don't know about Rock Speakers, while I was stationed in Germany, Cerwin Vega speakers out numbered all the other speakers in the Barracks followed by Pioneer and JBL and ARs. Most of them belonged to R&B and Country Western Fans. Rock Guys bought more Pioneer, JBL and AR! The favorite of the guys who liked Rap Music also owned Cerwin Vegas and they earned their "House Party" Rep!

Both The Hardrocker 417r's and the S2 's are shake the foundation loud. I owned a pair of the S2's and had them hooked up to a Pioneer SX 1280 receiver so when i listened to Led Zeppelin , Bad Co., Scorpions , etc. the whole neighborhood listened too.

When I was a teenager my best friend’s uncle had a Pioneer SX 1250 hooked up to a pair of these Vegas and we would go over there on the weekends and drink all weekend long with his uncle, friends and family and have fun at his crazy house party’s. I swear every weekend was someone’s birthday party or a holiday that needed to be celebrated. I remember the stereo blaring nonstop until someone forgot to put a new CD in the CD player, or everyone had gone home or passed out. Those times were a lot of fun and that stereo put the party in house party

I just rebuilt a pair of CV! VS-100 for speakers in the shop. Love them. I owned AT12s years ago and loved them. I now own the "new" SL-15's, they are awesome. They get down to 28hz on the specs and I don't doubt it. They sound as good or better than most CV!s I've heard. It's hard to beat a couple of the old school series though. I disagree with using a small amp. Sure a 50wpc amp can drive them, but not to their full potential. Power them off a 500wpc amp and see the difference. In my stupid opinion.

I agree, the D-9's sound better with some "control". Dampening factor (higher) can equate to better control, so can a better built power supply, usually found it better built higher power amplifiers.

@@santiagosantarge819 Nope, D8. It was the top of the D line for a short while until they came out with the D9. The D8 had one mid driver and the 15" woofer had no choke, it ran straight and just rolled off naturally. The D9 had two mids, an upper and lower, and the 15" woofer was choked via the crossover. I'm sure the theory was that model design needed more fill in the lower midrange than just what could be naturally supplied by the 15" woofer. The D9 had a bit higher power handling as well. I bought my D8's new back in the mid 1980s when the series first came out. Since then I've had them re-coned plus built new cabinets since the old ones had gotten pretty beat up over the years.

One of them had it's face cover off and that red foam meant they were coming home no matter their condition. The screens were toast, as were all 4 subs.I bought four 15" screens @$6 each. And the reconing kits were $26 + tax. So I was able to add them to my already ridiculous Home theater system for just a little over $200. Now that is Divine Providence. We had four of these in our house on a Pioneer EQ with Reverb, Onkyo receiver Onkyo 5 disc CD player Onkyo cassette player and 2 1000W Carver amplifiers each 2ch × 500w RMS ( our neighbors on the block hated us) we also had like 15-20 4-way Pioneer 6x9 in little shoebox boxes throughout the house ran in series , my dad worked at Northrop Aerospace for 25 years back in the days, he would shop out of his employee store that had everything "literally" if they didn't have it they would order it and put it on your tab, I don't know how the store did it but they would get everything on the low low 😁, anyways, man those d9's are so loud they would create a sound magnetic field around your body like you're going to tear a hole in the Matrix into another universe 🤭( especially four of them pumping that hard back in the 80's - 90s listen to to Short Ice Cube Spice 1 etc etc ) ✌❤ .......

If by EDM you mean, "Electronic Dance Music" - yes, I agree. I mean, VEGA was the rage in the "disco" or (later) the dance club. For every system out there, at least 1 of 3 probably used Vega's because of that legendary groove. Good call on the new bases, they seem to always be in rough shape... I am working on a pair of Altec Valancia and they too have base problems.

The red ring is now orange from age and it finally dried out . My problem is that I no longer live in north jersey, I know live in marathon in the Florida Keys, and I don't have access to audio stores out here. Does anyone on line know of any places in lower south Florida where I can get 2 woofers new? By the way I paid 11 hundred dollars apiece for them in 1980.. Hope someone can give me some help. Wait a minute, so the exact same junky piezo tweeter and the exact same underperforming mid range woofer are immediately rendering my Canadian built Audiosphere Research speakers "junk" and "party" types, while these CV are being relegated to the audiophile status????? And all you ever hear about CV is how much bass they output, not much about treble or mid range.

  • @1JGP1

    @1JGP1

    3 жыл бұрын

Even though the tweeters and mid-ranges may look the same, they are different. If you were to remove them from the cabinet, you'd notice they have a much larger magnet and higher power handling. Probably one of the big differences with the D9 over the Audiosphere is that the D9 cabinet is made of a much heavier particle board and it has better bracing - this certainly impacts the sound. If you do a knuckle test (knock on the cabinets), you'll notice that the Audiosphere sound pretty hollow whereas the D9s not so much (they could still use some improvement though) - this is an indicator of a better built cabinet. The cabinet makes a big difference in the overall sound of the speakers. I'm sure you know this, and you are right - the Cerwin Vega is known for deep bass. I wouldn't go as far as saying Cerwin Vega is "audiophile status", but they are one heck of a party speaker! If you like the sound of your Audiosphere Research Speakers that's all that really matters. Enjoy them!
