    Have to say, there was one constant theme that kept the animated series relevant, despite the obvious changes. I'm pretty much referring to the respect paid towards New York City and past events that made NYC of the 80's possible. The later, Q5 storylines did manage to pay some homage to city lore. I recall an episode that saw a spectral version of the original Pennsylvania Station come to life where Madison Square Garden had been built. Winston even recalled passing through the structure as a kid. Another episode, from the Slimer centric episodes, had Egon take Slimer to Lincoln Center to watch a live orchestra. He gave Slimer a conductor's baton. Little things like that made me appreciate the love that went into making NYC just as much a character of GHOSTBUSTERS as the 4 jumpsuited pros!❤

    That's amazing you say that - When I pitched the Ghostbusters comic to IDW (back in 2009) I stated that New York was a "character" just as important as the Ghostbusters themselves! :)

    The greatest sin that happened to The Real Ghostbusters was the network interference from Q5. ABC literally had the best animated show on television at that time, and they botched it up by listening to educational consultants from the Rand Corporation.

    Thank you again James for demystifying things from my past. By the time TRGs hit my screen, my family had relocated away from the metro area, and the programming I witnessed would chop and change a lot. Regional networks didn't have the budgets to buy and televise new series as they premiered in the US or elsewhere. I still to this day don't remember seeing a full run of Filmation's Ghostbusters, before TRGs started to be shown. Also noticing the show was never the same after that first season. This video proves JMS was right, Q5 were liars! A pity ABC listened to them and not the success Season 1 had on Saturday Mornings on THEIR channels. Also it didn't help that Bull Murray was being a jerk it would seem (in regards to Peter's recasting). EDIT: He actually wasn't, my bad! Also it was great that JMS did NOT acknowledge that stupid sub-plot from Ghostbusters II where Janine was in a relationship with Lewis, no offense to the guy but yeah I'm more for JanineXEagon for sure. It's awesome that your great friends with Laura and that photo with you, her and frank at the end looked amazing. :) For sure this story about how RGB changed in those later seasons needed to be told. :)

  • @KasumiKenshirou

    @KasumiKenshirou

    Has it ever been confirmed that Murray demanded the role be recast, or did he just say "Huh, he sounds more like Garfield than me," and then someone else overreacted? The reason I ask this is that I heard a story about Stan Lee criticizing a drawing of Iron Man by saying, "Where's his nose", meaning that his mask had been drawn in such a way that a human with a nose could not possibly fit under it. Someone misunderstood what he meant and for a while Marvel was drawing a nose on Iron Man's mask. (I think this even carried over into the Mego dolls that were made during this period.) Something similar is when they made Sulu gay in the Star Trek reboot movies, and were then surprised when George Takei did not approve of this change, stating "Takei is gay. Sulu is not." The people making the movie just ASSUMED he'd always wanted Sulu to be gay and didn't actually bother to ask him. But Murray has acted like an a-hole before, so him demanding a recasting could've happened, too. I remember the events of Ghostbusters II only ever being acknowledged in a single episode. Someone says, "Hey, remember when we fought Vigo and we had that mood slime?", and then they use the mood slime, which IIRC did stuff that it didn't do in the movie, like give a mood-slimed person the ability to fly.

    That's fair enough about Coulier - I think Summer will always be favored for Janine, because Soucie's Janine was almost written like a completely different (forgettable) character...until the bobbed hairstyle version, where she seemed to reclaim some of the edge that the original had! :)

    Here's the thing that is really sexist about Q5's comments about Janine needing to be more motherly; being MOTHERLY doesn't mean that you can't be sassy or authoritative but apparently, that's what those dipshits believed, that femininity and strength can not converge. And this isn't a shot at people who are more sweet like version 2 of Janine is. There's nothing wrong with that personality AT ALL but; 1) It's not Janine 2) It was only put in because Q5 deemed the original personality as being not up to their standards. If anything, Q5's choice in the matter is both insulting to more outgoing personalities AND people who are more perky because they were viewing both not as people but some sort of weird placement to keep kids 'safe'. If anything, their view on Janine being motherly and therefor 'non-threatening' implies that they think that her softer personality is more 'approachable' because she MUST be too passive to talk back now, right? Because anyone who is like that is just a pushover, RIGHT? It's like a creep picking a 'nice girl' because they assume she's easier to control while being threatened by the more forward girl and ending up being wrong about both. How could a group like that think they were improving things? This is one of my biggest pet peeves when it comes to how people handle female characters back then and even now; they always have to be 'RESEARCHED" and picked apart while the guys usually gets off scott-free, depending on their roles and this isn't me complaing about the guys either. A lot of times I ended up connecting with male characters more even though I'm a woman because OF THEIR FLAWS. Groups like Q5 and other terrible writers either make the female characters overly flawless or overly bland because having any sort of flaws would be considered an issue for certain people when it's what makes us human. It's why the original Janine was so great. She wasn't 'flawless'. She was snappy, she was witty but she was charming as hell and sweet. What Q5 made in response to that was someone that almost feels like they only made to control and feel like they had credit in creating. They wanted to feel like they had the credit for making the 'appropriate female character' for TV when they just messed up one of the most memorable ones. Sorry for the wall of text but I loved the video. And if I'm not mistaken, Q5 may have also played a hand in what happened with Pound Puppies since a similar 'tonal shift' happened there as well and Nose-Marine, the Southern belle and second in command to the crew, was suddenly made more 'motherly' as well, right down to always wearing an apron. Like I said, Q5's view of mothers was more backwards than they thought because even by 50s standards that wasn't what it was like in real life and there were often depictions where the 'mother figure' WAS more forward. It's like they took one BAD example and assumed everything followed that formula when they DIDN'T. Edit: that....2nd second read through. How the hell can they describer her as wanting her to NOT be for season 2 a victim but then complain that she fought alongside the guy a full sentence earlier?! THEY JUST CONTRADICTED THEMSELVES right there because she clearly wasn't a victim if she was capable enough to go with the guys to bust ghosts!

  • @cerealgeekTV

    @cerealgeekTV

    LOVED reading this comment - I do believe that, somehow, Q5 thought they were doing the right thing...not because it was right in the eyes of those working on the show, or the audience that had already made the show a hit...but because their "research" would've implied that their decisions were "correct" - They probably did have kids in a room watch a few episodes...and from that "research" determine the future of the show... - At the end of the day, consultancy firms are generally pointless - They are hired by companies as a good look...whilst the consultancy firms go out of their way to make recommendations, not for the good of the company that employs them, but because they have to be seen to be effective... - Interesting to hear about Pound Puppies - I know for a FACT that Q5 made changes to Defenders of the Earth - The original pilot had Flash with a daughter and the Phantom with a son - Q5 suggested swapping the sexes for "reasons"...and so Flash ended up having a son, and the Phantom now had a daughter...it's crazy...
