Centro Histórico de Olinda
Núcleo urbano emoldurado por uma massa verde, sob a luz tropical e tendo aos seus pés a praia e o oceano, o centro histórico de Olinda remete ao início da colonização portuguesa no Brasil, no século XVI, quando a cidade se consolidou como sede da Capitania de Pernambuco, no período áureo da economia açucareira.
O conjunto arquitetônico, urbanístico e paisagístico foi tombado pelo Iphan, em 1968. O reconhecimento da cidade como Patrimônio Mundial Cultural, pela Unesco, ocorreu em 1982 e refere-se a uma área de 1,2 km2 e cerca de 1.500 imóveis, os quais testemunham diferentes estilos arquitetônicos: edifícios coloniais do século XVI harmonizam-se às fachadas de azulejos dos séculos XVIII e XIX e às obras neoclássicas e ecléticas do início do século XX.
O traçado irregular do tecido urbano, que segue as cristas das colinas, remete às cidades medievais. O acervo arquitetônico representativo de várias épocas integra-se de maneira exemplar ao espaço físico, formando um conjunto de rara beleza.

Historic Centre of the Town of Olinda
The exceptional ensemble of landscape, urbanism and architecture found in the Historic Centre of the Town of Olinda is an eloquent reflection of the prosperity nourished by the sugar economy. Founded in 1535 on hillsides overlooking the Atlantic Ocean on Brazil’s northeast coast, close to the isthmus of Recife where its port is situated, Olinda served from the last years of the 16th century onward as one of the most important centres of the sugarcane industry, which for almost two centuries was the mainstay of the Brazilian economy. This former capital of the Portuguese administrative division (capitania) of Pernambuco became the symbol of sugar and of the wealth it procured. Its historic centre today is marked by a number of architecturally outstanding buildings set in the lush vegetation of gardens, hedgerows and convent precincts, a mass of greenery bathed in tropical light with the sandy shore and ocean below.
The harmonious balance between the buildings, gardens, 20 Baroque churches, convents and numerous small chapels all contribute to Olinda’s particular charm.
