Central Sleep Apnea Explained!

Central sleep apnea is less common than obstructive sleep apnea, but it's not rare. It's important to understand the different types of sleep apnea, including mixed sleep apnea. Be aware that if you have obstructive sleep apnea and you use CPAP therapy as part of your treatment, then you are at a higher level of risk to develop central sleep apnea.

    I don’t breathe when I sleep and I got a sleep study done and they said everything was fine and normal despite me gasping for air in the middle of the night during my sleep study. I think those sleep studies are so inaccurate.

    If you did a home sleep study we suggest asking your doctor for a referral to do an in-lab sleep test. Lab sleep tests are more comprehensive (measures your brain waves, eye movement, heart rate, oxygen levels, breathing effort, snoring, sleeping position) and the technicians will watching you throughout the night so the test won't miss any gasping during sleep.

    Similar experience here. First doctor concluded thing in my nose had moved out of place (it hadn't) because the pauses were too long. Second test showed biot pattern, but doctor offered no help for that. Third test, I only slept for 2 hours with all those cables and gadgets on me.

    I have a Neurologist due to a head injury as a child (I’m an epileptic because of it) who had ordered a sleep study. I got a call from my doctor who was quite concerned as they found that I stop breathing on and off irregularly throughout the night. Thus she is suspecting CSA but she was at odds with it because it is rare for someone my age and with my build to have CSA. I was set at 75% irregular stops in breathing for brief periods throughout the night which she found odd. She then ordered an MRI to see about brainstem activity and to have a heart echo done. She ultimately thinks something is wrong with the communication between my brain and body. My brain for some reason she suspects is not telling my body to continue breathing while asleep. Perhaps you could get an appointment with a Neurologist who would then be the one to order the sleep study and they would be the person to review the results and go over them with you. My periodic episodes of idiopathic double vision is ultimately what made her call me sooner rather than later.

    I have recently been diagnosed with both obstructive and central sleep apnea, my readings are regularly between 30-70 times an hour every night, i get severe chest pain when i laugh and have a heart murmur too. My respiratory specialist has never seen a case like mine and said that as a result of my case, he's now going to explain it to the rest of the respiratory department. Its incredibly difficult for me to breath through my nose while im awake.

    I’m not diagnosed with anything but I’m honestly scared to fall asleep. Every so often I will stay up all night because every time I drift off I wake up gasping for air. Normally this wouldn’t be a problem but last night really scared me. I was having these episodes of forgetting to breath for some reason, yet I could tell they were for less than 30 seconds. But there was this one that seemed like it lasted longer than a minute before my entire body jolted awake because something fell off my shelf. I know my body would have woken me up because I wasn’t breathing, but what if it didn’t and I just laid there not breathing? I’m only 14 years old and I know I probably have nothing to worry about but I’m honestly so scared to fall asleep now

One day I did try to drink beers and it make me drunked so bad that I fall asleep without experiencing it and maybe it's from caffeine because every morning I drink coffee and now I stop taking coffee and yesterday I sleep without experiencing it but I just need to make sure that this does go away. I think your best bet is to see a sleep doctor and do a polysomnography (PSG)/sleep test. A PSG measures your brain activity while you're sleeping so it can see if you have any sleep disorders. So, I was diagnosed with CSA at the age of 38 and been on an ASV ever since. Never took opioids or antidepressants that could have caused this. I also know I had the part of CSA that caused me to stop breathing completely and basically "turned off" in my sleep (I had it during the test and they caught it). I'm wondering what would you recommend I do to test and see if there is anything wrong with my nervous system?

    Hi, thank you for watching. We think the best course of action is to ask for a referral to a neurologist. Maybe speak with your sleep doctor/sleep clinic to see if they have suggestions because there are some sleep doctors who are also neurologists. Those "type" of sleep doctors may have more answers.

    Hi, yes definitely give PAP therapy a try unless the doctor that interpreted your sleep test suggested otherwise. If you had the sleep test done at a sleep lab, please make sure to follow up with the sleep doctor on treatment. If you did a home sleep test, we'd suggest getting an in-lab sleep test done to confirm the CSA diagnosis.

    Some people develop central sleep apnea after starting CPAP therapy but in most cases, the CSA goes away after a few weeks as the body adjusts. It's not very common, but it does happen. The benefits of CPAP therapy outweigh the potential risk of developing CSA. Plus, there are ways to get rid of the treatment emergent CSA by adjust CPAP settings - and your doctor will monitor your response to therapy and make changes accordingly.

    Sometimes cpap therapy can cause central apneas but this can go away in a few weeks as your body gets used to it. A suggestion is to turn off EPR as that can also contribute to central apneas. Keep an eye on your centrals and definitely let you doctor know if you continue to have centrals with EPR off for a week or two. But if your sleep study shows that you have a significant amount of centrals, it's best to speak to your doctor ASAP since that would indicate the central apneas were a problem before CPAP.

  • @RespShop

    @RespShop

    17 күн бұрын

    CPAP can be the first line of treatment for central sleep apnea and if that doesn't fix the issue then doctors usually prescribed BiPAP therapy instead. There are many different reasons why central apneas may occur and depending on the cause of the central apneas, different types of BiPAP therapies will be prescribed.
