Brilliant, thanks for this video. Was about to blow £100 at Screwfix , but accessed the pump with a screwdriver. Impeller was siezed, but gently moving back and forth got it free. Switched back on and didn't turn but a couple of gentle taps on the flange with a hammer and...Result: central heating again! Now I know how, will take apart to make sure impeller is clear. Thanks again.

Thanks very much indeed. As soon as you got to the bit about freeing the impeller with a screwdriver, I remembered what to do. We have this problem every year when we put the heating back on. I can't complain though, the Grudfos is about 40 years old and still going....fairly strong!

Excellent guide and advice. Breaking off the seized shaft resolved my problem. THANKS. N.B. Just as Sebastian advises, make sure the pump is cool and disconnected from electricity. Mine had to stay connected to the pipes and I thought I was turned off but as soon as the shaft was released, the pump started working and pushing some hot water out. I stopped it very hard with taking the fuse off. So, be careful.

I could hug you man. I removed the silver screw, freed the slot behind it, and now I have heating. I can't tell you how much I appreciate heating at this time of year. Question is, I assume it seizes for a reason - is there something I should be looking for, or at least keeping an eye on going forward, rather than just ignoring it until it gets cold again? Thanks again!

Very helpful and clear, thanks. Used it to debug my Wilo pump. Water had collected in the electrical box that was installed so that it was under the pump. After leaving it to dry out I am now able to kick-start the pump by cranking the shaft with a screwdriver as described - and the pump starts and runs no problem. However it can't start on it's own - if power is removed I need to manually crank it again. I've tried exchanging the capacitor with another from a working pump and no joy. Removed the allen nuts and no blockage. Any thoughts..thanks again!

My Wilo pump is failing to come on at the mains. Sometimes if I disconnect and wait around 20 mins it will come on again and start pumping the hot water around the system, but today its failed to start. Any Ideas ? My main concern is that I am running a 21kw wood burner and if I don't pump the water through the rads the hot water cylinder will get to hot .

Our wilo star pump is very hot and doesn't appear to be circulating the water through the radiators, although it sounds as though it's running. I'm in the process of bleeding all lines to cover the possibility of air in the system. Is it okay that it is hot to the touch?

I didn't find a solution...and didn't have time to debug it further as house was getting cold..But I reckon the starter windings were damaged maybe due to corrosion or simply moisture...replaced it with the next gen pump in the same series and it now specifically says to install it so that the control box is on the top side..I guess to avoid any leaks dripping in

I have a problem with that exact model of pump, where sometimes it won't start, unless you change the speed to 3 then it bursts into life, and will then run quite happily on speeds 1 or 2; in fact it will then be fine for a few days. Is this likely to be the start capacitor?

Hi, great video... very good. I'm looking at this video as today, I've noticed that the radiators in the house are cold downstairs, warm upstairs so I'm guessing its but being pumped around. The pump/system has been noisey lately, banging pipes etc. Today, I've noticed that now, the pump just has a buzzing sound. Could you tell me what this is likely to be before I get the unit replaced? Much appreciated. Thanks.

Very helpful video. I have a Grundfos UPS 15-50 pump which is fairly old. Recently I started getting a noise a minute or so after the pump starts running. I have assumed the noise is from the pump & sounds like a noisey bearing. After 15 to 20 minutes the noise disappears & the pump continues to run quietly for the rest of that heating period. If the boiler is not on for long the noise appears to stop as the boiler flame switches off, but the pump continues quietly for a while till the boiler switches it off. At first I assumed the bearing got quieter after the pump expanded with the heat of the system. But that doesn't explain the pump going quiet when the flame goes off. Would appreciate your thoughts.

Run system with flame off. If noise doesn’t occur it’s probably the boiler ‘kettling’

  • @TopTimotheus

Very sorry for not replying sooner. I've assumed it was 'kettling'. The only way I could see to run with no flame was to turn gas off, but system kept repeatedly going through the startup procedure, not running continuously. any way the noise did not occur. The noise has now disappeared as mysteriously as it appeared! Thanks for your expertise.

Matthew Voyle capacitor is used to start pump. Gives it the push it needs to get it going. My capacitor had gone bad so pump never started itself. Had to take screw out every day to give it a nudge and it then ran fine until it stopped. Same every day until I replaced capacitor. Crack doesn’t always means capacitor is dead, but I’d replace.

I overcame this by turning the speed up to level 3 setting rather than the mid level 2 setting I had before. I assume dirt was clogging and the faster speed allowed the sediment to mix with the water and disperse at the higher setting. I was able to then turn it down to level 2 setting later.
