➡️ What is Cyanosis?
Hypoxemia is a term that refers to low levels of oxygen in arterial blood. Whenever this is the case, the patient may develop a blueish discoloration on their skin. This is known as cyanosis. This abnormality typically becomes visible whenever the amount of unsaturated hemoglobin in capillary blood exceeds 5-6 g/dL. Blood that is carrying oxygen molecules has a bright-red appearance. If the levels of oxygen are low, the blood would have darker-red color. That explains why the patient's skin may develop a blueish color due to low oxygenation.
➡️ Types of Cyanosis:
1. Peripheral cyanosis
2. Central cyanosis
➡️ Peripheral Cyanosis
Peripheral cyanosis also causes an abnormal bluish discoloration of the skin, however, it is can be found in the patient's extremities. The patient's extremities may feel cool to the touch whenever peripheral cyanosis is present.
➡️ Central Cyanosis
Central cyanosis can be seen in the patient's face, nose, or lips. This is the more serious type of cyanosis that could be an indication of a life-threatening medical emergency. Central cyanosis involves the discoloration of the body and visible mucus membranes, and may be a sign that a severe lung disease is present. It can also serve as an indication of profound hypotension or the presence of certain congenital heart diseases. This is rarely the case for peripheral cyanosis.
➡️Treatment for Central Cyanosis
The treatment of central cyanosis involves the management and providing care for the underlying condition. Supplemental oxygen therapy is almost always indicated. It's important to remember that cyanosis by itself is not a disease. It's a clinical sign of an underlying condition.
