How to Interpret an ABG?
It goes without saying, but knowing how to interpret an arterial blood gas is a very, very important skill for Respiratory Therapists. ABG interpretation is especially important in critically ill patients because it helps the healthcare team determine the best course of action in deciding how to treat the patient.
💥ABG TMC Practice Questions ➜ ➜ ➜ bit.ly/2xEb2FM
Here are the Basic Steps for ABG Interpretation:
-- Step 1 - Obtain and Run the ABG Sample
-- Step 2 - Determine if the pH is Alkalosis or Acidosis
-- Step 3 - Determine if the Issue is Respiratory or Metabolic
-- Step 4 - Determine if it’s Compensated or Uncompensated
What is an Arterial Blood Gas?
An Arterial Blood Gas, or ABG for short, is a test that measures the blood levels of oxygen (PaO2), carbon dioxide (PaCO2), and acid-base balance (pH) in the body. It’s a test that is used to assess how well oxygen is being distributed throughout the body and how well carbon dioxide is being removed.
Normally, healthy lungs move oxygen into the blood and push carbon dioxide out efficiently during inhalation and exhalation. This process is referred to as Gas Exchange. The body is receiving fuel in the form of oxygen while eliminating waste in the form of carbon dioxide. If a patient has breathing problems or a disease that affects the lungs, their ABG results would be abnormal.
What are the ABG Normal Values?
For you to better understand the key elements of an ABG test, it is important for you to know the definition of the values that are being measured.
-- pH - Refers to the acid-base balance of the blood.
-- Partial Pressure of Oxygen (PaO2) - Refers to the amount of oxygen that is in arterial blood.
-- Partial Pressure of Carbon Dioxide (PaCO2) - Refers to the amount of carbon dioxide that is in arterial blood.
-- Bicarbonate (HCO3-) - Refers to the total amount of CO2 that is transported in the blood.
-- Oxygen Saturation (SpO2) - Refers to the amount of hemoglobin in the blood that is saturated with oxygen.
ABG Normal Value Ranges:
-- pH: 7.35-7.45
-- Partial Pressure of Oxygen (PaO2): 75-100 mmHg
-- Partial Pressure of Carbon Dioxide (PaCO2): 35-45 mmHg
-- Bicarbonate (HCO3-): 22-26 mEq/L
-- Oxygen Saturation (SpO2): 94-100%

I have never seen something so easy to follow. I could cry right now.
I don’t know about you guys but since COVID 19 our ABG counts run per shift have tripled! We need one therapist alone to just run abg’s! It’s been crazy! Stay safe everyone we are in this together ❤️💪🏼
I watch your videos DAILY! I love this KZread channel as well as your Facebook page! You guys have been such a big help! I am almost finished with my 2nd semester. Only 2 more semesters and state exams stand in the way of starting my career of being a RRT!
So grateful for y'all! ABGs have always been something I'm more than confident about. I love it when I can successfully interpret a gas, as well as help my peers do so!💉
I struggled quiet a bit when we first started interpreting ABGs. I turned to the internet and found Respiratory Therapy Zone and it made ABG interpretations so much more understandable than what I was learning in class. Respiratory Therapy Zone is now my go to when I'm struggling with understanding concepts in class.
I love this video! It makes ABGs easier to understand! I also enjoy the daily emails! I've learned so much thank you!
As a 1st year Respiratory Therapy student I really appreciate your videos & find them very helpful for further understanding + you make it fun!

This is awesome! Such a great refresher, even as a practicing RRT! Thank you.
As an individual who has been out of school for so many years and went back to obtain a Bachelors Degree this video is most certainly helpful; you are truly a blessing within my career! Thanks for all you do and continue to do.
Your channel and facebook page have been extremely thankful to me personally as a first year student respiratory therapist! Especially since I learn best by watching videos, these have been so so helpful with exams, these are amazing!
These videos make it so easy to understand!!! Thank you
Thank you for putting together this much needed video on ABG's!!
Yes I've also had to learn to interpret ABG's through a online course. Luckly, my teacher is great after a few practices I was able to learn how to read them. Practice makes perfect!
This is a very nice guide for not only students, but RRTs who need a quick refresher from time to time. Very nice!
I am a first year respiratory therapy student and this video helped me to understand how it works! Thank you so much!!!!
Going over ABGs in diagnostics right now and this was so helpful, especially since we’re home instead of on campus!
Thank you for making this so clear and concise. After sitting through a nursing lecture and numerous KZread videos, you made it click for me. Thanks!
Thank you so much for making these videos!!! I can’t wait to use them when I start respiratory school this fall! 🤗💕
This video helped so much!! I’m so thankful for y’all 😭😭❣️
Been loving getting my emails to practice those questions and these videos help so much!

Love this! Great information!
Very helpful video ABG can be challenging in the beginning, but with enough practice you can understand what's going on with the patient oxygenation, and ventilation status. It can also be a metabolic problem as well. 2nd year student enjoy all the content you put up.

Thank you so much... it’s very clear 🙏🙏🙏
Great video! Very helpful
I am a first year student. And i completely enjoyed figuring out the patients status on looking a ABG values. Whether it turmed out to be respiratory acidosis, alkalosis, and metabolic compensation and vice versa. pH is king and leads the rest.
Thanks a ton for this wonderful and crystal clear explanation. You've got a new subscriber 🙌😍
Very nice interpretation of abg . Thanks sir
