Central American bushmaster (Lachesis stenophrys) is a rare and amazing pit viper from primary rainforests of Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama. This deadly venomous species can grow up to 3.5 meters. It is one of the longest venomous snakes in the world. In this video you will see wild bushmasters in their natural habitat. These pit vipers look a bit like dragons thanks to their rough scales. A bite from a Central American bushmaster is very serious as this species has very toxic venom.

    I didn't even notice the snakes around your necks until the very end of your LZ intro and you both had them around your necks. Funny. I like how you didn't make it obvious or point it out. I actually saw the one around her neck first then looked at his which, ironically, was more obvious because of her hair covering up the boa a little. Fantastic videos and I've seen a ton of them. I love the quiet, natural sounds, and steady camera work with excellent pattern, color, motion to truly see the animals/snakes in their home environment living their daily lives.

    Rather obtuse my suggestion concerning rough scales and friction when most of the friction involved in terrestrial, if not all, snakes involves the belly scales and, so far as I know, the belly scales of all snakes are smooth. The hypothesized crypticity selection of rough scales would be consistent with a positive correlation, extending the hypothesis here, of scale roughness with a passive, ambush predatory strategy, that of vipers. Smooth dorsal scales would predominate among elapids, mostly active hunters (not death adders of course) on this hypothesis. Usually in motion when in the open, presumably, elapids would benefit minimally from cryptic scales and, maybe more to the point, rough scales require more physical material, nutrients, to build, an added cost.

  • @LivingZoology

    @LivingZoology

    2 жыл бұрын

    It sounds reasonable the way you write it. Most vipers have keeled scales and they are mostly sit and wait predators, while elapids are active hunters. Having rough scales seems like a great adaptation for vipers.

    Magnificent creature! Years ago a National Geographic photographer ( best job in the 🌎?) was on assignment in the field and was somehow bit in the leg by a bushmaster . Regrettably by the time he reached proper medical care he held on to his life but lost the bitten leg it had to be amputated. Love the conservation project we need to persecute wildlife trafficers and the idiots who create black market demand for them - born free no one should keep them in captivity. 🌍😢🌍

    Interestingly the eastern diamondback rattlesnake maximum recorded size is also around 8 feet. Does this betray some biophysical limitation to pit viper size? Anyway, great job with the videography. I believe another neotropical pit viper has such protuberant scales, Crotalus durissus I believe, giving it a colloquial appelation of "pineapple snake." Homology is doubtful given the distant relationship with Lachesis, possibly convergent selection. But what is the advantage, decreased friction?

    A possible advantage to keeled scales (e.g. African puff adder) and protruberant scales mean that the snake is not shiny and smooth but rather rough-looking like a stick or log, which makes it better camouflaged, like a ghillie suit.

    Maximum recorded size of 2 species of bushmasters mentioned in our video is about 3.6 meters (it is written in the video also). Rough scales might help the snake to be better camouflaged in the leaf litter. There is another pit viper in Costa Rica with such scales, check our video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/oaKiq9JqZ8i5XcY.html Yes, it might be a convergence but Crotalus durissus lives also in areas where there are no bushmasters. There is still so much to learn about snakes. You are asking good questions :) Thank you very much for watching our video and commenting!

    Can you tell me about bushmasters venom toxicity

  • @LivingZoology

    @LivingZoology

    2 жыл бұрын

    The bite from bushmaster is very serious. These pit vipers have various toxins in their venom (basically hemotoxins, cytotoxins and neurotoxins). The toxicity is very high and different components attack many tissues in your body. The venom is similar to venom of Fer-de-lance.
