Central Air Troubleshooting - Top 10 AC Problems

Central air troubleshooting, the most common AC problems. The reasons they happen, and how to fix them. Stuff like AC not turning on, air conditioner not cooling, etc. The way I came up with this top 10 list is by reviewing my calls that I went on last year and counting all my AC repair calls. Then I separated them into different categories, depending on what the fix was. I ended up with a variety of different issues that I came across last year. In this video I go over most of the AC problems that I had to deal with, the reasons why that happens, and what can be done to fix it.

True story: My better half called me from NJ and told me her son had no heat. Her son has kids, loves Halloween. I asked her if the furnace switch was set to ON. Then I explained where it probably was, and that it probably had a red switch plate. About a half hour later her son called and told her that a Halloween Skeleton he had stored near the furnace had fallen over and its head had hit the switch, turning it off. He turned the switch on, and the furnace kicked on. No, I did not make this up.

My a/c packed up. I could not find anyone to even try to repair it. I was quoted $5k to replace it. I watched these videos. Diagnosed the fault as capacitor. A new one cost me $26. I fitted it myself by following the videos (I am not a handy kind of guy, but I thought I would have a go) .The a/c absolutely working fine again. These videos saved me $5k and a lot of hot nights. Thanks so much to Word of Advice TV. !!

Can you provide some advice? Have you ever used a polyurethane expandable bag in an HVAC unit? My A/C was repaired last summer. When I went to change the filter, I saw the gray bag stuffed under some wires in front of what looks like to be a regulator. I can only make out 'gulator' the bag blocks the rest. Is this normal? Should I be concerned?

@Johnny Rep so if your car speedometer goes up to 160mph, does that mean you expect the car to be able to produce that? If I write a check for a million dollars, I expect my bank to pay a million dollars, even if I haven't deposited it first. Right.

Homeowners should know how and when to 1) clean; or clear out their AC condensation tubes 2) check their capacitor for capacitance and 3) clean their filters and 4) visually inspect their contactors 5) inspect their condenser fans. and 6) clean their condensers units and 7) clean and drain the pan under the evaporator coil. But we can't make sure we have the proper amount of freon.

Just one addition to this great video. If you have a condensing furnace with a secondary heat exchanger ( an over 90% furnace,) they have a trap below the secondary heat exchanger. If that trap gats clogged, and they often do from mold build up, your furnace will not start because the vacuum switch will not prove out to send a go signal to the hot surface igniter or the gas valve. Simply remove the trap, clear it in soapy water with bleach, and reinstall it. Also make sure the condensate drain line is clear.

Great video! Just replaced my furnace blower wheel by myself for $100. It's my first time doing it and it wasn't too difficult. Just make sure you shut down all the AC power at the main circuit board first! Then take the furnace door off and remove the blower assembly. It should be secured by a few screws and attached to a circuit board. As you detach it make sure you take pictures and videos so you remember how to put it back together. Take the part with you to your nearest HVAC supply store and get a matching unit or order online. Finally, retrace your steps to install it.

Very good! Informative and right to the point. Though I'm not an HVAC technician I've done all my own repairs. I installed a Potter Brumfield 24 volt delay timer on the output of furnace circuit board for start up of AC compressor (energizes motor start contactor on AC compressor unit) due to electric power service sometimes turns on/off - delaying compressor start up (2 minute delay) assures no restarting with compressor under high load. Excellent video-thanks for posting!!

I changed the capacitor, and same issue .. I changed the contactor after and still Same issue... I replaced the batteries at the thermostat, did the check point with volt meter several times.... I noticed the brown wire that comes out of furnace at the check point in control box in furnace reads 25 volt but when it goes inside the unit outside there is no voltage... why my AC is working when you keep the button in contactor pressed ??? Awesome and most informative video!! Thank you, thank you, thank you for NOT playing annoying music in the background!!! I cannot even begin to tell you how much of a difference that makes. You are very well spoken and audio is on point with no wind, buzzing or other annoyances distracting or preventing viewers from hearing you. Your meticulous record keeping and analytical manner of thinking made it possible to offer us the most accurate statistical information. Much appreciated!! Every bit of everything you said was useful to hear. Thank you for not babbling, rambling or trying too hard to engage with your audience on another level. People with AC issues are almost NEVER in the mood to hear about anything outside of a possible solution. The setting was perfect with no distractions and a unit to point out the general area of the possible problem. You seriously nailed it when you made this video and I hope other you tubers take note and follow suit with their own videos. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!

Thanks a million for these videos. I was deployed March 2018-April 2019 and apparently the 3-way capacitor for the compressor died while I was gone. The wife had a wooden spoon sitting on top of the compressor assembly that she had to use to kick-start the fan every time she turned it on (and therefor had to manually set the fan to on/off on the thermostat instead of auto). The compressor worked fine, but the fan motor would hum loudly if no one manually assisted it. After watching your videos this weekend, I 1) found that the capacitor was bulging and ordered 3 new ones with same-day shipping on Amazon, 2) replaced the rotting insulation on the suction line, 3) and cleaned off some caked-on dirt on the house-side of the radiator fins. Of course, I also cleaned the air filters for the blower and all the vents. The capacitors arrived an hour ago, and thanks to all your tips, I was well prepared and had the bad one replaced in about 10 minutes total. The wife was so happy to flip the thermostat to auto and hear the fan kick on by itself. $36 for 3 capacitors (2 spares) plus $10 for insulation vs a $60 bill for home warranty to fix (which probably would've been a several-day wait, wouldn't have replaced the suction line insulation, and wouldn't have left me with 2 spare capacitors). And I was convinced it was the fan motor before watching these vids. Happy to be wrong and ready for the heat wave!

Fantastic fabulous informative video!!!! The absolutely best I've seen! I'm surprised that some of the things I have done match your comments. I change my furnace filter every 2 months. I use a pleated furnace filter and use to use ones that I noticed were too restrictive on air flow. I recommend getting a Merv 8 rated furnace filter which does a good job on collecting dander but doesn't restrict the air flow. Their only like $5 and places like Ace have specials, buy 2, get 1 free. 2 summers ago, my AC froze up on top of my furnace. I ran just the fan. Then every 20-30 minutes, I used a 5 horsepower shop vac to suck the water out of the drainage pipe that runs into a pit/hole where the sump pump is. I did that for 12 hours! But I was amazed at all the debris, rust particles, etc I was removing from the cooler unit on top of the furnace. If I hadn't used the shop vac, the ice would still have melted but this way I was helping clean the internal cooler fins, etc. without tearing it all apart. It's really old and probably only a 50% efficiency furnace so if I stay here, putting in a new 90 to 95% efficiency furnace & air conditioning unit would have a rather fast payback time in regards to lowering my monthly electrical and gas bill. Finally, I clean the exterior (outside) fins with the garden hose set at stream. Technically, your suppose to clean from the inside and blow out but depending on the pollen count, etc. I have to do weekly. I have an outdoor metal ornament with 4 crows sitting on each end of a bar than spin around when the wind blows. Since it's so close to the AC unit, it blows it around. When it isn't spinning, I know the air flow is being restricted by dirty fins. Hose them off, and the spinning lawn ornament takes off spinning! Finally, and this just started happening, I went outside and the AC fan was making a horrendous noise. I know it will eventually need to be replaced. But, I took my little rubber mallet and hit it dead center of the fan and the noise went away. I have to do that once a week. LOL. That sounds rather redneck but hey; it's working! And it's been 103° for the last 3 weeks! Thanks Again!

One of the better videos on a.c. repairs the knowledge is good, I'm a 50 year journeyman I've pretty much seen it all, some of these repairs should be done by a reputable a.c. company and repairman, this tech is explaining what a visiting repairman should but often he has so many calls he has to get on to the next one. The one point I would pass on is that your unit is way too expensive to try most of these calls yourself, good job though young man
