Centaurs | Part-Man, Part-Horse

Of the many mythical races told of in Greek mythology, few are as rowdy and savage as the centaurs. Portrayed as half man and half horse, centaurs lived in the forests and fields in central and southern Greece, running wild and spending their days fighting with one another and causing trouble for travelers. In many stories, centaurs act as drunken and wild fools filled with lust and impulse, always ready to cause trouble. Though there are said to be a few wise and noble centaurs, such as Chiron, the trainer of heroes!

I remember reading long ago that when the Mayans first saw Spaniards riding on horseback the sight of it terrified some of them and they equated the Spaniards as some sort of centaur type of monsters.

Technically, according to some mythographers, Cheiron was an uncle of Heracles: after all, Heracles' father, Zeus, was also a son of Cronos.

They are most likely a regional, ancient cultural memory. From a time when the vast majority of tribes and clans across Europe and the Mediterranean basin were still in the stone age. The copper age quietly passing them by but finally interacting with the BronzeAage peoples. People's who were the first they'd ever seen on horseback. Its impossible for us today to grasp what a sight it must have been, or what it was like to try and comprehend a man, on a powerful animal they'd only ever hunted for food. The lack of reason about the whole spectacle must have mystified them. And from a distance its easy to see how tales of the two creatures "merged" would spread through breathless tribesman, hunters and scouts who'd just seen a genuinely fantastical creature. And the tales of their violence, theft, rape and drunkeness also fit the historical record: Many of these first bronze weapon equipped explorers were first and formeost raiders and pillagers. And stone age tools and weapons were no match for bronze.

Yes, this is the most realistic explanation for the myths around centaurs.

I've loved your "final notes" on the subject. They are true to this day. Anything that looks like feels different from the norm "must" be bad or dangerous. It's incredible how little these things change. Sometimes I wonder if humanity ever learns.

The closest thing we have to a centaur in real life would be the praying mantis. Like centaurs, praying mantises have four legs and two arms (which are actually front legs that evolved into claws).

Have a soft spot for Centaurs they should be used in fantasy settings more as opposed to Elves and Dwarfs Bias though as I was born the 1st of December!

Wonderfully done. I am aware of a fair number of explanations, but I must admit, the possibility of centaurs having been surviving Neanderthals leaves me baffled when something such as people riding on horseback rather than chariot would be more likely.

There is one modern interpretation of a centaur that you skipped over: Centaur Man from the video game "Mega Man 6". Considered by many to be an unusual looking Robot Master to to his half-humanoid half-horse chasie, this character worked as a tour guide at a local museum in his native Greece prior to the events of the game.

So again must be asked the age old question: If a centaur were to wear pants, how?

I would rather say that IF a centaur would wear something to cover his private parts, then it would be kinda like a big skirt.

The Centaurs walk the earth before the great flood of Noah. The God of heaven was angry at this and flooded the Demi Gods all over the world.
