I’m lost for words. When demos from a couple of years ago seemed to be the most amazing thing one could see on a C64, there’s always a new demo that outdoes them! These demos are like magic tricks for programmers, and these demo coders always seem to have a few more tricks up their sleeves!
XIII certainly wasn't unlucky for Censor Design. Another masterpiece.
Prodigy Section @7m00s gets me every single time . When that bass kicks in its hard to believe were listening to the c64 at its limits!

most likely clever sequencing of short samples and loops - with a smidgen of incredible programming i feel!

Samples are nibble packed to 4bits and playing back at around 12khz (this equates to 6k per second and a typical 4 bar loop would be around 11k or so which is streamed from disk where need be. The novel approach however is that these 4bits write to the waveform registers and output >4bits even though the source data is in 4bit format (this is because the sample generated varies dependant on previous written byte and next. In order to make everything sound better, SID (triangle waveform I think with filter) is used for the bassline together with the digitized audio to recreate the audio. Nice job by swallow in this part
This has got to be the best SID work I've ever heard! Would have blown my mind back in 1985.

Yes the soundtrack is absolutely amazing. My number one of commodore 64 tracks so far.

Kevin Loughin There’s a Demo that plays music sampled at 48KHz.
I LOVE C64 ❤❤❤❤ FOREVER ❤❤❤❤
The Prodigy thing is AMAZING, they used digi sound and the SID at the same time, ok that was mostly the 6581 sid, and the 8580 for the digital sound, but still for a C64 Amazing, and than the firework Sprites Amazing, wow.
I wouldn't think I'd hear The Prodigy on the C64, but lo and behold, I just did.
Holy crap! If I'd seen this on my C64 in 1985 I would have wet myself.
this is one of the most amazing things i've ever witnessed in my life
Real masterpiece at the limits..👌😏
😱❤
And the change in the Face, omg
Awesome production.
Absolute class!
2:43 super!
Superb
Wow!!!
Is it using the 6581 to play the sample and using the 8580 for the rest? what happens if you play this on real hardware. I'm getting a 1541 Ultimate II + in a few weeks. It has sid emulation. If i use that in conjunction with my breadbin or C64c can I run this demo?

Did it work for you? I think you may have needed one of these dual sid adapter boards. Fortunately, there's a new Censor Design demo out this year, again with some amazing sample+sid music. :)
i dont get the point with two sids?
I am curious... about an almost 3 minutes mp3 fitted in 64k ram

probably got streamed from disc and only a few kb in ram at once.

It's made of many looping samples so it's not just one continuous thing, and yeah just only one of the loops really has to be in memory at any given time.

As stated in the end credits of Wonderland XII, about 3 seconds of Digi fills the entire RAM so there's a lot of sample/loop juggling going on here. Pure wizardry!

@@H3wastooshort It's around 6kbit/s sample rate cleverly packed PCM (no mp3), so... yeah they stream (and the song is actually pretty repetitive) You should watch the Wonderlan 14 demo from 2023, they have 3+ minutes of hip hop music lyrics in it. You can tell they load additional data during the chorus, but it's so slick and well made. But wow. kzread.info/dash/bejne/noV4pLWzc8u2ms4.htmlsi=Yjjir3tLAnKO7uIf&t=800
What am I missing here? It says 'Real C64, 8580 + 6581 SID' . Does that mean this demo needs some kind of modified C64 with two different SID-chips? Since I guess regular C64's comes with only one of them.

Well, the machine in reality shipped with either, and you can buy an adapter that lets you mount both. It was an extensible machine for a reason. I mean, there are demos that run on Amigas with accelerator boards. It's a pretty "legal" aftermarket addition. You also add a floppy drive for the C64, the machine doesn't have to be 100% stock for the demo to be "valid" for the machine. :)

The recording uses a 6581 for the left (or right) channel and 8580 for the other. They sound a bit different, giving a little bit of stereo feeling. The music is just mono, but it sounds better with headphones due to left an right being slightly different.

it works with either on real hardware, the dual/combo mentioned probably just means the owner has 1 of the hardware modifications/adapters where output goes through both chips but they are not required, the demo works on stock c64's and emulators.
I have heard this can cure epilepsy. Not! 🤣
not enouth mémory in the c64 for the sampled sound ...

@@gaborszabo6406 It really sounds like 16KHz 8-bit quality, which would only be like 4 seconds worth of sample in 64k. Some really clever jiggery pokery happening here. The Prodigy lends itself well as their music is sample-heavy and is quite repetitive so you could employ all sorts of tricks to build loops, but this pales into insignificance with the technological knowhow used here.

I witnessed this on a stock C64. It's real. The trick is, that smack my bitch up consists of a lot of repeating loops.
