📒100% Honest, Real Reviews, Advice & Opinions📒
I would like to make it completely clear that like all the reviews and advice that I give on the BBR video channel and website, this is my honest and completely genuine opinion and I am in no way compensated to describe a binocular in a particular way or with a bias.
In other words, if I think a binocular or a feature on it is great, I will say so. If I think it is rubbish or it is weak in certain areas, I will also point them out.
Before writing and publishing any binocular review, I thoroughly research, test and use the instrument in my office as well as out in the field. I also conduct comprehensive comparisons between the binocular under review with a number of benchmark binoculars in both good and bad light conditions.
Whilst I make every effort not to, I do make the occasional error or am sometimes supplied with the wrong details. If you spot any mistakes, please feel free to contact me either in the comments section, via social media or on my site, so that I can rectify it/them.
As always, I love getting feedback and your opinions. it is these that help me improve and continue to supply you with content, advice, and reviews that you actually want to watch.

I own well over 20 pair of binoculars including all of the alphas on the market. I expect optical excellence from a $2k plus set but I love to search for inexpensive sets that also have excellent optics. Lately 8x32 is my favorite size as they can be taken on walks comfortably unlike larger bins. I have been comparing these Trailseeker ED's with my 8x30 Nikon HG's ($1000) and although not as good I find it amazing how close they compare. The Nikons do everything better but only by a very slim margin and I mean slim. That says alot because the HG's are amazing in every way. For the price these are a no brainer imo especially in 8x32 form. They might not be alpha quality but they are knocking on the door imo. I plan on keeping these which also says alot as I have high standards these days and have given away many pairs because I refuse to look through them.

Hello, really great video! I am thinking about purchasing the Hawke Frontier ED X 8x42 and I have seen your detailed review on the BBR website. However, I am wondering if the optical quality of the Hawke is better than that of the Athlon Midas 8x42, which has similar optical specs. Moreover, I have heard a couple viewpoints that the Hawke is prone to glare issues. What is your opinion on this? Thank you.

Hi Mukund. Thanks for the kind words - It is hard for me to say with complete confidence as I have not tested the Zeiss Terra, but as you know the brand comes with as good a reputation as you can get - the Terra series is their response to the mid-level market which is very competitive.

Jason, I've just found your channel and love the reviews you are producing. The structure, layout and content are easy to follow and very comprehensive. You make it easy to compare different options. I'm currently considering the Celestron 8x42 ED binos but your Hawke frontier ED X reviews also caught my eye. You seem to regard both options highly having rewarded each in its own category. There are a couple of price brackets difference between the two (in terms of your review categories). Are the Hawkes worth the extra money? My main use will be insects in open and covered areas and in varying light conditions. I also have to carry quite a bit of camera gear, so the 8x32s might be an option. BTW, have you ever considered reviewing the Avalon pros or do you have a view on them?

  • @Bestbinocularsreviews

Hi SC - thanks for the comment and sorry for the late reply - I have been away on holiday. In answer as to if the Hawke Frontier ED X www.bestbinocularsreviews.com/Hawke-Frontier-8x42-ED-X-Binoculars-Review-232.htm is worth the extra money - it all depends. With binoculars, you definitely get diminishing returns the more you spend, and thus once you get to the level of something like the Celestron 8x42 ED binos that a really good for the price, every small increase from then costs more and more. So yes the Hawkes are better, but the difference is not as much as say comparing a cheap $40 bino to the Celestron's. So is it worth it - that depends on how much you value the extra money you need to spend on them - so for some, the answer will be Yes, others No. Hope this makes sense? As to the 32mm options - yes a good idea if you carry a lot of other gear, but just be aware of the downsides as well, if unsure take a look at my article and video on 8x32 vs 8x42 Binoculars www.bestbinocularsreviews.com/blog/8x32-vs-8x42-binoculars-11/

It is hard for me to answer it completely as I have not yet tested the Steiner Wildlife 8x42 binoculars, so I can't comment on the views between them. But in general, my experience with Steiner binoculars has always been very good and I like the brand. I recommend taking a close look and comparing the specifications and features next: www.bestbinocularsreviews.com/blog/which-binoculars-to-choose-08/ - Also this article should help: How to Choose Binoculars: www.bestbinocularsreviews.com/blog/how-to-choose-binoculars-05/ Once you have done this see if any of the specs that are important stick out between each of them. Then see if can you get a good deal on one over the other, or sometimes if they are still even, it can just come down to which brand or which pair you like the look of the most. I hope this helps. If not and you want more personal attention, I am more than happy to help you out more, do some research, compare the stats and delve deeper into your specific needs, but it is hard to do so in this small comments section and will also take my time to do the research for you - So if you are interested and want to support the channel why not "hire" me as your personal bino advisor. Thanks for the reply. I enjoyed reading a lot of your reviews and guidenings. I’m quite a ‘nerd’ when I invest in new products, so I seached the web to narrow down my options for binuculars in my price level. I ended up buying the Nature ED yesterday because of the good reviews on the original Nature DX, and because it seems, that the new versions is quite a step up on different parametres. But I am wondering why I could only find one review on the new model, since it seems, that it’s one of Celestrons new big lines. And then I thought of your webpage and how nice it would be if you had made a review on the ED version. Unfortunately I don’t have the budget to hire you, even though it would be cool. 😊

@@roostern There really are not many REAL binocular review sites out there, most are written by people who never touch the binocular and usually know very little about binoculars and indeed optics in general and so I think that is the reason for so few "real" reviews. For me there is only so much I can do - For each review I do I like to test the instrument for at least a couple of weeks and then each binocular takes me about a week to research, write about, photograph and then even more if I also make a video review. Anyway glad to hear that you purchased them and thanks for the feedback - perhaps you could write a small review on them once you have had time to use them - I would be happy to publish your thoughts on BBR 😜👍

Hi, yes, reducing color fringing is certainly desirable, for all uses, but very important in astronomy. Just beware not all ED glass binoculars actually perform better than non-ed binoculars - there are many other factors and I have seen many well made non-ed glass binoculars show less color fringing than poor ED glass binoculars. Hello Jason, I would like in having a suggestion on weather it might be better for me a Nikon Monarch 5 8x42 or a Celestron Nature DX ED 8x42. I mainly need a good low light binocular (portable) for wildlife photography (usually going out at down or dusk in shrub and woodlands) so I can scout the area. It seems (to me) both share pretty similar features (honestly Nature DX ED is very difficult to find but I read about very narrow Field of View of the Nikon. Also, I don't know what change between Nature DX ED and and trailseeker ED. They look identical to me. That's said do you have any suggestion? @Bestbinocularsreviews

Hi Alex. Hope I can help. Unfortunately, I have not tested any of the Nikon Monarch 5's so can't comment on the view. But just check the specifications and see what their FOV is and compare it to the other models you are interested in. You are right, the Nature DX ED and TrailSeeker ED ranges look and indeed are very similar and it can get quite confusing! However, they are different and must use a different optical system, you can see this by the fact that the field of view on the TrailSeeker ED is wider. This is good, but for me, the most important difference is that the TrailSeeker ED uses very highly reflective dielectric coatings on the roof prisms. I have just checked and there is no mention of this on the Nature DX ED specifications and thus I think I am correct in my assumption that they do not have these and will rather use the cheaper and less reflective silver mirror coated prisms. Now is this bad? No, not at all, just not as good as dielectric coatings. As you can see from my review www.bestbinocularsreviews.com/Celestron-TrailSeeker-ED-8x42-Binoculars-review-253.htm I think the TrailSeeker ED is truly an excellent binocular for the money and tough to bet. Another option and another very similar binocular in this kind of price range is the Hawke Frontier 8x42 ED X www.bestbinocularsreviews.com/Hawke-Frontier-8x42-ED-X-Binoculars-Review-232.htm - either way for the money you will find these hards to beat - Also I have just checked to confirm that the Nikon Monarch 5 so also uses dielectric coated prisms, so it is just a pity that their field of view is relatively narrow.....

Nic Vid!!! Question; which binoculars would you recommend for hiking, birds, outdoor under $500 or so? Could you give a few models? Celestron? Bushnell? Steiner? Thanks for your help... 8/10 x 42 I am assuming...

Hi, a 42mm binocular is fine if you don't have much gear or only your binoculars with you. If you have a backpack ad lots of other equipment, you may wish to consider a mid-size 32mm instrument instead. A good place to start is to take a look at the best performing binoculars I have tested in the mid-high end category (approx: $300 - $500 / £300 - £500) www.bestbinocularsreviews.com/binoculars-best-value.php#4 - All of these I would recommend. Hope this helps.

Hi, many thanks for the question. I have not used or tested any models from the Nikon Monarch 5 series, so it is hard for me to say definitely with any sort of authority which is best between the two. I do however have an article on How to Choose Between Binoculars www.bestbinocularsreviews.com/blog/which-binoculars-to-choose-08/ which i think will help and I am more than happy to help you out more, do some research, compare the stats and delve deeper into your specific needs, but it is hard to do so in this small comments section and will also take my time to do the research for you - So if you are interested and want to support the channel why not "hire" me as your personal bino advisor. Hello! Great review. I am currently in search of a binocular - which will be used mostly for jungle safaris & bird watching. As per my budget and reading your reviews I had narrowed down my choice to the Vanguard Endeavor ED II 8x42. But After seeing/reading this Celestron TrailSeeker ED 8x42 review now I am confused! It would be great if you can please guide me choose one among these two models. Thanks much.

Hi - thanks for the comment and kind words, much appreciated. As for the two models on your list - both are excellent value and perform very well at the price range. So it will come down to which has the best specs in the areas that are important to you. I explain how I do this here in my guide on how to choose between binoculars: www.bestbinocularsreviews.com/blog/which-binoculars-to-choose-08/ if the specs are similar and you still can't decide, it can often come down to which is on sale, or which you like the look of most - I find I much prefer using binoculars that look and feel right to me. Hope this helps, if you still can't decide which to go for, let me know and I will see if I can help further.

@@Bestbinocularsreviews thanks much for your quick reply. The only real world difference I can see between the two is the angle of view. I believe in that section the Celestron TrailSeeker ED 8x42 might be slightly ahead. I have asked my local dealer for the best price for both and am waiting for the same. I also have the pricing from amazon India but only for the Vanguard. Will let you know.

No problem - and yes, please do let me know once they come back to you and which you choose - I have not checked how much difference there is in the field of view between these two, but a wider view is certainly something I would rate as important for viewing birds at closer ranges, like in a jungle.

@@Bestbinocularsreviews hello! Hope you are doing well. I have finally bought the Vanguard Endeavor ED II as the Celestron Trailseeker ED is not available with multiple dealers. I paid around US$ 274 for the Vanguard Endeavor ED II and received it yesterday. Haven't got much time to play with it, but my initial expression is like "wow" - superb build quality, fantastic low light performance. Thanks much for your guidance.

Hi Daniel, Thanks for the kind words and the question. I like to keep the binoculars that I use as benchmarks anonymous, partly because it is actually irrelevant and I feel it can be unfair to the binocular I am testing depending on the price bracket. With my 8x42 reviews I actually use a couple of benchmarks. Firstly I use the original pair that I started with many, many years ago and which i have used for just about every 8x42 review written! These are a mid range instrument and is no longer in production. I also use my high-end, what I would describe as an "alpha" level 8x42 as well. BTW: If you delve very deep into the BBR website www.bestbinocularsreviews.com/ and go back to some of my very first reviews (which are a bit embarrassing to read now, I have to say!) , you could probably work out which ones I use ;-)

Also I wanted to ask about edge vision and clear focus area. I have read a comment that complains that "edge vision is poor and the clear focus area is too small". Do you still have those binos with you to answer this from direct inspection and not from memory? Thank You!

Yes, you can definitely use an 8x42 for astronomy, but if that is your main purpose then there may be other options that you should consider. For example depending on your needs a 7x50 or 10x50 may be a better choice - for more I would suggest taking a look at my guides to astronomy binoculars: www.bestbinocularsreviews.com/astronomy/

Hi Shaun, I would say they compare well against the Vortex Vipers - although I tested a pair of those many, many years ago, so hard to remember everything. Whilst I have used them at trade shows and in store, I have not yet fully tested the Monarch 7 as Nikon are pretty hard (actually impossible so far!) to get hold of in regards to sending me samples and so I cannot really make a informed comment in this regard.

One issue I had with your website was my inability to get a side by side comparison of these against the Maven 1.2 8x42; because with the upgraded ED glass and Magnesium focus wheel, these seem like a head to head budget version of the Maven 1.2. PS, I love your site and your reviews. PPS, I am leaning towards getting these for my wife for bird watching and the Maven 11x45 for me for hunting, birding and star gazing.

Oogh that is a tough one - both a v.good and similar specs and features. Quite often it can come down to which brand you like the most or which bino you like the look of (this is important as you need to like using it) or you can go with which one you can get the best price on the GPO is a little more expensive usually?

  • @MrAndras18

@@Bestbinocularsreviews Yes.. for me the GPO looks much better, actually here in europe the gpo is cheaper( costs ~125 euro less). But for me the focusing wheel is a dealbreaker some expensive binos has terrible focusing.. in the celestron regal the 1.5 closefocus is very appealing though. It is annoying that there is no shop where we could compare them on hand, it would be much easier..
