Celestion Ditton 66 - 1976 Vintage Studio Monitors
Музыка
Celestion Ditton 66 are extremely good speakers, really good value for money. Clear and full bodied sound with plenty of dynamics and well controlled deep bass. Good all-rounders.

Yes, these are indeed a very fine speakers. Lucky you - enjoy!
Gorgeous looking. And absolutely fabulous sound.
PHENOMENAL!!! Felt like the time when I was auditioning the Magnepans a few years ago. The snare attack at the start of the song actually felt like a snare!!! & I'm listening to it on KZread. Can imagine what would it sound like in person! Beautiful mate....

Thank you Aaron. I'm surprised that you can tell it through KZread, nonetheless, I appreciate your kind words.
I worked at a studio(Sound Arts in NJ) we had these out in the room. Friggin awesome...
Just inherited a pair of Ditton 66’s. They were sitting in the same place unmoved in my father-in-law’s living room since new in 76’ they sound amazing.

Ma sha Allah. You got some serious collection
I'm rotten jelly of your collection, especially these 66's. Top rate stuff.

Haha good one. Well, due to limited lack of space - it is a rotating collection. I buy speakers, review them and then sell them. So most of the times, I do not have more than 3 pairs at the same time.
beautiful boxes, great sound, great music, thanks a lot, greetings from Germany

I thought I had a lot of CDs but wow! But if you are into music in a big way that's what you do.
Thanks for this post because I just bought a pair of these yesterday, and it looks like your driving them on a Yamaha Amp. I have a $3000 Yamaha Integrated Amp. (lots of power) and am really disappointed in the sound especially all the hype on how good these speakers are, mine came from original owner, excellent condition, capacitors all seem to be ok..............Need to try another Amp and see what kind of sound I get. So, reading reply's I see where you have replaced the capacitors in yours and the difference in sound you claim, makes sense being 50 yrs old. UPDATE, wired to a Pioneer SX780 only 55w per channel, and was blown away how good these sounded. It is that freaking $3k Yamaha A S1200 and this picky machine to what speakers it likes, why it likes my Naim NBL speakers is beyond me.
Your speakers are so beautiful, and they sound great!

I have the newer 662`s. They too are magnificent beasts. What`s not to love?
lovely speakers,i have a pair of mint monitor audio r 152 ,teak wood ,sound very nice
I have just acquired a set from my grandfather who has purchased some new ones. Excellent speakers, I absolutely love them. Any idea of how much they were worth from new?
I’ve got a good pair of 66s, very good speakers especially when you power them with a powerful amp. I’m using an Isleworth mosfet amp (pure 100 watt per channel) and a Rega P6 turntable or a very uprated Denon CD deck. I would recommend anyone to get a pair of 66s if your back can handle them, bloody heavy lumps.
This pair will rock and sing3
First, thanks for the great demo. I, too, am a big fan of these speakers. I own a set of 33s and 44s as well. I just bought a pair of Ditton 66s in walnut. In the 1970s I worked at a stereo store that was a Celestion dealer. I wanted to get a pair of 66s then, but couldn't afford it so this is the next best thing. I was hoping you could offer some advice. One issue is the veneer. They are mostly in good shape, but the top surfaces of mine will need to be re-veneered. I think I have that covered. Second, I assumed when I bought them that I would have to recap crossovers, but they sound pretty awesome with the original caps. Should I check/replace/upgrade? Some have shared changing caps negatively altered the sound. What was your experience. The last question is about the material that looks like some sort of velcro that runs vertically, flanking the drivers to cushion or attach the grills. Mine is dried out and needs replacement. What is it? Thanks, Mike.
@AudioNostalgia

Hey Mike, glad you liked it. In terms of veneer, yes, re-veneering is definitely a way to go if you have time and money. In terms of crossover re-cap - I would definitely recommend measuring at least the electrolytic capacitors within crossovers. Mine were over 20% out of specs and replacing these made rather noticeable improvement in sound. Not because of the capacitors themselves, but rather the fact that they matched the values specified by designers. In terms of material, I bought a self-adhesive felt tape on ebay that perfectly fitted the gap were the foam was. You should be able to see it here, together with more in-depth impressions after re-capping: audionostalgia.co.uk/celestion-ditton-66-crossover-upgrade-cabinet-refurbishment/
In the 80s ran mine with a Accuphase E202 amp along side a pair of Tannoy Berkeleys & neither sounded like that demo.ATB.
I’ve got the ditton 66 series II where the passive radiator is on the back. I really love them but would like to try this 66 version side by side. Waiting for a pair to snap up.

GOOD
Hi, I have a pair of 66's purchased in 1972, they are in fair condition but require upgrading internally. May I ask where did you purchase the upgrade materials. Thinking of putting them into Wembley Speakers again with perhaps your upgrade sheet as a guide. Pleased to hear.

Peter Wilson Hi There. Most of materials were purchased from eBay UK, except for capacitors, which were purchased from falconacoustics.co.uk. Hope this helps.

good
I have a pair of these, but I blew them out. Can anyone recommend a repair service on the US east coast? Thanks very much!

Celestion made great speakers at that time. The 15, 33,44,66 and the mighty 88. What speaker cable are you using ? It looks interesting. System sounds great. I also enjoy doing video's of my systems. You might want to have a look at my videos on my page

Change the bass driver for a 12'' ditton 44 more modern and the high frequency will be a lot better and very good on voice on the crossover you have to do some change but for the bass part you have to find the good part like the old one '' électrolitique '' this is in french

θρύλος ηχεία!!!!
I had these Ditton's in the 70 and 80ties, the problem with these speakers is their bad internal wiring and capacitors. But a nevertheless a great speaker.

I have added more bracing to the cabinets. Inside walls lined with sound deadner material. Also they needs to be lifted from ground to sound better. Check my video.... kzread.info/dash/bejne/o4mKmNKbYcaaZ9o.html

I have a pair of 662 that I am planning on doing some upgrade, like capacitors and wiring, and maybe something to improve the cabinets. Can you share what bracing did you add to the speaker cabinets? What kind of sound absorbing material? Thanks! Yes, I do find them sounding better lifted from ground, and probably tilted a little upwards, and sometimes I find the sound coming from too low.

The speakers are of course Great, but you need to work on the video, we did not need to see the guy walk across the room to get the CD, !!! Nor did we need the camera moved around in a jerky manor, if your going to move the camara pkease use a gimble, or leave in stationary. Otherwise fine.
@AudioNostalgia

Thank you for the constructive criticism. At the time when the video was filmed I did not have a camera with digital image stabilisation, and was I not prepared to spend money on a gimbal, which at the time was very expensive - especially considering what HiFi equipment I could get for this money. In terms of me walking across the room - yes, I agree, it is pointless. However, out of 1.4m channel views so far, I only had one comment about it, thus statistically, no something I need to lose sleep about.
