Norm McDonald was the primary writer for these sketches, sadly he passed away awhile ago. The real Burt Reynolds loved Norm’s portrayal of him. They were reportedly in talks to have Burt make a cameo as himself but he died before that could come to fruition…

I like how, in interviews, Norm gives credit to SCTV and Eugene Levy, who did a fake gameshow skit. Apparently, Celebrity Jeopardy was close enough in concept to the SCTV skit that he actually called Eugene Levy and asked permission to do the Jeopardy skit. Norm was amazing. Rest in Peace.

There were 2 similar SCTV skits with host "Alex Trebel" . High Q, and Half Wits. But you sir are correct. Have you seen them? Half Wits especially was a favorite of mine.

One of the best skits ever to come out of SNL. So glad you are getting to this one.

Darrell Hammond portrayed Sean Connery, Norm McDonald was Burt Renolds and Jimmy Fallon was various celebs. Course Will Farrel was Alex Trebek. Very funny.😂🤣❤

This is probably my favorite of all the Celebrity Jeapordy skits. Or anytime both "Sean Connery" and "Burt Reynolds" are featured, it's an instant win.

The best part is that you have yet to see the best one of the Celeb Jeopardy skits.

Celebrity Jeopardy was noted for "dumbing down" the questions as compared to regular Jeopardy. While some celebrities did very well, sadly some appear to be not much smarter than those portrayed on SNL.

This is my favorite “normal” Celebrity Jeopardy skit.

In my opinion, this one is the best in the series. I also think it was the 1st or 2nd iteration. So, after this, we kind of knew what to expect. And, at least the first time I heard it said by Norm MacDonald as Burt Reynolds, Turd Ferguson was a pretty funny name.

norm's weekend update was the best thing on the show back in the day.

Oh man. This is the best one. I think this is the birth of Turd Fergerson. (Funny name.) I love how giddy you are about the Mama Trebek jokes. It’s great. Back in the day, Jeopardy used to do actual celebrity episodes with significantly dumbed down questions in some cases, and SNL just dialled that up to 11

I like that this one includes a shout out to John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band! To explain, in the 80s there was a movie called "Eddie and the Cruisers", and later its Canadian made sequel "Eddie and the Cruisers II: Eddie Lives!" about a fictional rock band, but the music was actually that of real band John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band, who were like a poor man's Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. I'm a fan of the music and both movies.

Our shared appreciation of the Mama Jokes from Sean Connery is why I have liked and subscribed!

It’s SNL. You can’t take it too serious. All the ones with the characters Sean Connery & Burt Reynolds are the best. Check out The Olympia restaurant, cheeseburger cheeseburger. Any John Belushi samurai, and of course cowbell.

I remember when this first hit, it seemed like, at least to me, that it was supposed to be a skit focusing on Norm's Burt Reynolds....But after the first showing, Connery stole the show, and became the central figure.

this is the best celebrity jeopardy. this one always felt like they purposefully tried to break Will on screen. What's even better IMO is Alex actually loved Will's impression of him. IMO, this is the gold standard for the entire running gag.

The joke with stupid crazy celebrities is based on the contrast with regular Jeopardy where the contestants are all very smart and chill. The very first Celebrity Jeopardy SNL skit also has Norm MacDonald as Burt Reynolds.

That's one layer, the other is that Alex is hoping against all hope that someone will make a correct answer. Despite all evidence to the contrary, he is still participating in this fruitless practice on the off chance someone gives him a correct answer.

The celebrities being complete buffoons is part of the comedy. Celebrity Jeopardy is already easier than the normal show since celebrities aren't supposed to be trivia masters and everyone wants them to win money for charity, but then the skit dials that up to 11 because the complete absurdity of it is hilarious. It also lets them write whatever jokes they like and not just celebrity references.

If I remember correctly, I believe Norm Macdonald had a hand in writing those classic skits along with head writer Jim Downey. You owe it to yourself to watch some of Norm's classic bits on interview shows like Conan O Brien. He was hilarious and a master at inappropriate humor.

I think start to finish this particular celebrity jeopardy episode was my favorite -- my friends started using the name Turd Furgeson for their internet names and we even went and found a foam cowboy hat in Texas, which I still to this day refer to as $Texas.

I'd agree this is one of the best running gags on SNL but "The Californians" is a close second. And yes you need to check out "Cork Soakers" too.

This is one of the best my other face is with david duchovny as Jeff goldblum .. so great.. I think one of the jokes on why they ate stupid is cause there was celebrity jeopardy and the questions were way easier then on mormal jeopardy.

"Whoever wrote this..." Look it up, Norm Macdonald wrote these sketches, with help from Steve Higgins.

This skit was created by Will Farrel doing a trebek impression and Darrell Hammod doing a Sean connery impression. the reason why the questions are dumbed down is because in actual celebrity jeopardy they tend to give the celebrities lob ball easy questions so they don't feel dumb on national TV. so SNL took the dumb questions to an extreme for comedy.

The being dumb part is part of the joke. The only one who isn't portrayed as dumb is sean connery, but because he doesn't really try, just to get under Trebek's skin. Burt Reynolds is somewhere in between Connery and the others

Search for Celebrity Jeopardy with these folks: T Cruise, Keanu Reeves, Hilary Swank and Nicholas Cage. Can't remember if some are.together but they are classic.

them getting everything wrong is probably the gag that started this series: if you want knowledge challenge watch regular Jeopardy.

Burt Reynolds was supposed to be the star of the skit, but Connery took over and Norm Mcdonald was fired.

This happened a ton when gameshows would have all-celebrity episodes. They'd often dick around making funny answers or just being the kind of people that made you question how they survived childhood.

Fun fact, the Connery‐Trebek rivalry was a bit of an Easter egg in some old video game.
