My uncle has travelled to Africa to shoot magnificent animals... with a camera. The only thing he said he wanted to leave behind were his footprints on the ground... Not blood. This is a good philosophy to have. It's sad that some people still get off from killing defenseless animals. Sure this guy will be ruined financially as a result of his actions but I hope something good comes out of his newfound notoriety such as speaking towards the conservation cause. RIP Cecil.

Agree. I love your comment. Also, I was hoping you'd know- apparently the Cubs have to be killed bc theres a new lion taking over. Is there anyway those Cubs could be relocated? I very much respect animals, especially intelligent animals. But I see more hatred for Dr Palmer and Americans than necessary. Dr Palmer commuted a crime, but it is extremely disrespectful, cruel, and downright obtuse to suggest he should be put in a pen with lions. To suggest that this is the fault of Americans, hunters in general, or even the wealthy is just as foolish and obtuse as Dr Palmer's actions.

Hunting for sport is a joke. Hunting for food or defending yourself is differenr, however to kill any animal just for its head alone is a terrible move in the game of life. An animal you kill should go to use in things you need such as food. Not rugs or furniture. Especially if the animal you are hunting is nearing extinction and/or endangerment.

Zimbabwe just announced that they're also looking for a Pennsylvania doctor who poached a lion. Guy by the name of Seski. This guy has pictures and words posted on big-game websites about how he shoots arrows into the animals. He talks about how the arrows damage the organs, break the bones....it's really sick stuff. These guy get-off on sick infliction of pain and injuries. They're psychopaths, no doubt about it.

The whole thing about this is that if this dentist just happened to kill an unknown lion who wasn't Cecil then nobody would bat an eye. He got unlucky and his guides told him to shoot that particular lion who happened to be famous, now everyone is out for this dentist's blood and hates him with more passion than Hitler himself it seems. Why does it seem that nobody is focusing their anger at the guides? Everyone is focusing their energy on Walter when they should be going against the whole concept of big game sports hunting in general instead of making Walter's life miserable and hating him for doing something tons of other people have done before.

jhhwild but the guides are in custody already. People are upset thinking this dentist can escape justice. The public furor would die down a bit if we extradited him. Also, I don't think people would be cool with any lion walking around in agonizing pain for 40 hours. He went from being safe on a reserve, to lured out and killed in a very cruel way. It's inhumane and ILLEGAL. I think we should ship this guy right over.

I mean it's not like he's the sole person responsible for the existence of the sport. And the sad fact is that if it were any other lion this would not have gone viral and nobody would have cared. Gryphon S. It was the guide's responsibility to make sure he wouldn't end up doing anything illegal. Walter was under the impression that what he was doing was completely legal but the guides fucked up. It was their fault. As for the suffering of the lion that is the nature of the sport, I agree that it's horrible but if Walter gets consequences for the suffering of the lion then so should every other person who has participated in the sport as well. It would be much more productive to focus the hatred on the sport itself rather than on Walter.

I can clearly see the collar on this male lion.

People curious as to why others are freaking out about a lions death: there are approximately 10,000 lions left in the wild. Back in the 1930s, there were upwards of 300,000. It is estimated that lions will be extinct in 20 years at this rate. Killing them for sport is senseless and stupid, and is ruining Africa's ecosystem.
