CDC: Tips From Former Smokers - Marlene K.’s Treatment
Marlene knows that she’s lucky to have found a treatment for her eye disease. But getting shots directly into her eyeballs is still upsetting each time she gets them. Marlene smoked and developed wet macular degeneration, a disease that can lead to blindness. In this video from CDC's Tips From Former Smokers campaign, Marlene talks about her monthly treatments and says, “Why did I ever smoke?”

I'm 40. I got diagnosed with Macular Degendration this month actually last year at 39. They do not know why I got this so young but but I'm sure my smoking past did not help. I smoked from ages 15-25. I get both eyes done monthly.I also have several autoimmune diseases/ailments so there may be no relation to smoking but I do not wish this on anybody. I'm not into he shock commercials but heard about this one and had to check it out. Our eyes are so precious folks! If this could prevent anybody from going through this I do hope it helps. This is an incurable blinding disease and these injections are a band-aid. I just wanted to put it out there this doesn't discriminate to age. Love to all.

How does it feel to have to have a needle in your eyeball.
I like the fact that she puts humor in this terrrifying story. Ironically, I feel sorry for her when she gets them...
I used the drug Chantix and was able to finally quit after smoking for 15 years. I've been quit for over 7 years now! I wish I had never smoked but I'm also so glad that I finally quit.
I can't take this.. Oh God. I'm glad I never smoked. My doctors say I have lungs of a 10 year old. Pls never smoke. Never. This poor woman.
Never smoke
Do anything and everything you need to do to quit. I did the E-cig for almost 2 years. I had gum disease and lost teeth. Pray, alot...
I got my first injection last week...it sucks!! I will pray for you

VASHAW GULLEY That is a VERY wise decision. I'm so thankful I've been quit since November 5, 2006. I quit at the right time, cuz I learned smoking can cause diabetes very shortly after I gave up the smokes. Now I know tobacco smoking causes a whole host of disabilities and scary health problems. It doesn't just cause lung cancer, heart disease and emphysema.

VASHAW GULLEY I agree, I am glad that no one in my family never smoked. This happening to Marlene really scared me like “Ay Dios Mío!”
People like this are the reason I never want to smoke. I couldn't even watch this video all the way through--it disturbed me that much.
Ouch... 😲😱😨
This needs to be shown to every teen before they purchase a juul.
No! I have never smoked and I never will, but this one is just too much. Nope. Just thinking about... eye injuries... is enough to give me the shivers. I even try to hold my breath when people are smoking in my presence.

Stories like this one, and Terrie Hall's, are why I never want to smoke. I still remember the first time I saw Terrie Hall on TV, and I knew I didn't want to end up like her. If you don't want it to happen to you, then don't smoke.
Oh goodness that is so bad

No they shouldn't. People have a right to smoke if they want to. Everyone knows the risks of smoking yet they continue to do it, and that is their decision. There is a huge market for cigarettes and states get TONS of tax money from it. if people want to smoke then they should be allowed to without fear of prosecution. I do not, nor will I ever smoke cigarettes, but I respect the decisions of other people who do

Linda Morris - Hi, Linda, see my post to Brandon - above - and you will see how I quit. You can do it. Just do it. One moment, in one day, is all it takes, and a few days of your body detoxing, and, you've got it licked! 3 weeks is all it takes to change our habits - this has been scientifically proven. It only takes 3 days, however, for your body to get over the withdrawal - the rest is up to you. I pray you stop today, and ,will go on to live an amazing life smoke free! WE're here for you, Linda! Good luck god bless, and, be healthier...and hopefully live a longer, and happier life without cigarettes. MAK

Linda, I also wanted to quit but I made several attempts over the years with no success ; even though I knew it was best for my health I just couldn't seem to kick the habit because (I know this is sick), I really ENJOYED smoking cigs. But after I broke my pelvis I really had no other choice. My doctors demanded that I quit. Since I was stuck in the hospital and rehab for a month I had no o other choice. So I put on a patch and, taking one day at a time and with the support of family and docs and friends, now 6 months later I am a non smoker. It feels so good to say that. So use every tool available including the quit line where they will send you a few months of patches and provide invaluable support and encouragement. After 40 years of smoking, if I can do it you can too. Don't give up
God I'm so sorry this is horrifying
Smokers smell really bad. Once you quit and get a sense of smell back you will understand. Get a doctors help to quit.
i know what marlene is going through i too get the injections but mine they said was from being severally near sighted i developed a large black circle on my eye is why i get the treatments i have gained some of my sight back
scary

My question is does this happen when you smoke weed or only cigarettes?
@Tomb-Wraith

klimmr3021 Research has not proved weed harmful to your eyes long term. In fact, some research has proved weed to be an alternative without long term side effects.
Why is this a thing
Smoking is horrible it should be abandoned.
I've had eye injections. due to my diabetic macular degeneration. it's not as big of a deal as its put out to be.

Eewwwwwwwww
I've been smoking since I was 17. I'm now 57. I have cataracts, ocular histoplasmosis, and I have macular degeneration. I am a type 2 diabetic. Guess which one caused the macular, and it wasn't smoking.
You know what also causes macular degeneration? GETTING OLD. age related MD is the leading cause of vision loss for folks over 55, INCLUDING ONES WHO NEVER SMOKED A DAY IN THEIR LIFE. These ads the cdc has been putting out lately have been downright irresponsible and fear-mongering.
@HeyStepha
9 жыл бұрын
And yes I know smoking is a huge preventable risk factor for it. But it's not a be-all end-all. "I never would have smoked if I'd known" is fine but what if she was going to get it later anyway because that's how old eyes work sometimes?
@m.a.krittedge3521
9 жыл бұрын
Stepha - Emphasis on "because that's how old eyes work sometimes?" - MD is more related to diabetes, and a few other disorders, not primarily because you get older! You're making assumptions about older people's health. But, you are right, smoking is a huge and preventable factor. Also - how do you know whether or not second hand smoke may have possibly contributed to older folks getting MD? MAK

Stepha Agreed!!! Death is inevitable to all of us, and the amount of fear they instill in the ads is ridiculous! These situations are the results of how far an individual is willing to go to add a few more days to ones already numbered existence!
Macular degeneration has NOTHING to do with smoking. this is shameful and completely dishonest. I dont smoke, but this is a tragic thing, my mother has it, and never smoked a day.
@Tomb-Wraith

Debbie Phillips Just because she has it and didn't smoke does not mean it doesn't occur. In fact, the number one cause of macular degeneration is smoking. Smoking constricts blood vessels to the eyes and causes damage to the cornea and retna by cutting off blood supply.
