    If the company is making millions in extra fees and only paying 100k one time in penalties for breaking the law then why the fuck do you think they keep doing this illegal activity?

    my credit card covers LDW when i rent a car using that card. a lot of people don't know this, check your credit card policy guys. also, never rent using a debit card.

  • @MKillBill

    @MKillBill

    akui88 this is only partially true. Credit cards have MANY loopholes in coverage, including luxury cars, large SUVs, trucks, and none will cover liability...meaning if you damage another vehicle then you are still responsible for damage to that car, person, and property. Also, they act as secondary coverage and you will still be responsible for paying a deductible and filing a claim on your own insurance, potentially raising your rates. The damage reimbursement that a credit card provides may not come for many months.

    You need to ensure your credit card offers PRIMARY insurance. Very few do, and I do mean very few. Amex offers it, but at extra cost that you must opt-in for. SECONDARY insurance offered by 98% of the rest is absolutely useless to anyone who already has automotive insurance policy because they only kick in AFTER you put in a claim with your own insurance company.

    When I worked for a major car rental agency years ago in Newport Beach Ca., they pressured employees to cheat and overcharge 'suckers' (that's what they called people who came to rent cars) anyway they could. If the person was foreign, they would screw them even more

    I just got scammed for $200 from Enterprise. I never had to rent a car before. My insurance company set it up for me, so when he said he just needs a $100 security deposit for the car that I will get back after (sans the tax) I thought it was standard. They not only took the deposit but charged more than twice that on my credit card. (The two day estimate became 10, and apparently $20 per day) Insurance wasn't even mentioned.

    I had damage to a rental car and my AmEx card covered it. No fee no problem. Waive the damage, pick up liability if you want or get it from an outside company. The key is to know what you're talking about and not let the agent think they can scam you. I rent 5-6 times a year and you know they can read people pretty quick. Do your homework. You can also book more than one car from different companies as long as there's no cancellation fees. I even found a cheaper car on Kayak when waiting in line once. Also, refuse to pay for any upgrade, never worth it. Be nice to the agent, they probably hate their job anyway.

    The insurance saves you from having to pay your deductible and loss of use and loss of value fees. It's not a scam, if anything happens you literally are saved from almost paying $1000 out of pocket. These people are crying over being offered something that could potentially save them money? Boo hoo!

    Yea, and if you get doored while parking, or rear ended in a touristy area where nobody is watching where they're going, then say hello to sky rocketing insurance rates for the rest of your life. Meanwhile, if you have CDW you would turn the car in, wash your hands, and never deal with the issue again.

  • @outdoorsguy

    The issue is informed consent. It is not given to customers. When customers aren't making an educated decision, it becomes a scam. This type of insurance is way overpriced anyway. Sales quotas and commissions tell you it's a cash cow for Dollar.

    It is a scam because the rate they charge is way higher per day than your own private insurance. They charge you a rate for the value of the car (maybe $30K) but they'll only pay off the deductible after your insurance pays -- maybe $500 or $1000. So you're buying $29,000 too much insurance and paying through the nose for it.

    If someone hits your car, even if you are not at fault and your only coverage is your own insurance then you have to pay your deductible directly to the rental car agency when you return the car. If you get the extra coverage, you don' t have to pay anything and can just walk away regardless of fault. However, personally when I rent, I use a credit card that would cover the cost of my deductible if I'm in an accident regardless of fault but if I'm found at fault for an accident, I may still see my rates rise.

    I always take LDW. $5000 worth of damage can easily be done by someone backing into the car when your not even with the rental car when it’s parked, for example. Flat tire, $150, cracked windshield, $350, someone broke into car and caused damage it’s on you. Car is stolen? Now your one the hook for the whole car, market value. I have a deductible, don’t want my rates raised. Don’t want to have to pay the bill and then go through the fight with my insurance company. Everyone knows that insurance companies just love to pay claims, not like they have any fine print or anything. Know what loss of use is? That’s why the agent “suggested” the customer take the LDW. The agent never ever said they person had to take it. The fake news media said that she did and then aired the clip of the woman saying “I suggest you take it.”
