Because the NHL made the same mistake putting a team in Atlanta, which did not work well when the Flames left for Calgary before the Thrashers came to town. Basically Winnipeg, you benefited from an NHL foul up.

Well apparently none of you know much about Coyote Hockey. I went to almost every game last season and the fan base is way bigger than you all think. Just last week the team hosted a prospect camp, which was held during the week day but managed to have sanding room only because there were so many people. I saw pictures from other organizations, including Detroit and Chicago and none of them had more than 100 people at them. If people started to follow the Coyotes maybe they would see,,

I mean Canada hasn’t won a cup since 93 with Montreal. I get the reasonings back then but this reporter was a dick to some people because they weren’t as knowledgeable on trivial details of the game. People who are saying what’s happening now is how winner felt isn’t true. They saw it coming. We got our world flipped upside down in a week after being promised support until the land auction failed.

I believe the Coyotes did alot better when they played downtown at the America West Arena. But the Arena was not designed for hockey. Funny story. Gerry Colangelo was asked Gary Bettmen during the the construction of the building if the NHL would ever come here. Gary said not in your lifetime. So they built it only for basketball. A year and Half later he called Colangelo back and said he has 2 businessmen wanted to move their team to his arena.

One other thing. The L.A. Kings also played host to some neutral site games at the America West Arena. That was before the coyotes came into existence, and perhaps a big reason why there's hockey in Arizona. Also, one other note, the Kings are a reason why Vegas has a team too. For 20 years, they played host to a neutral site game in Vegas vs Colorado

Putting an NHL team in a non traditional market is always a gamble, but I truly believe that when the Coyotes started playing in 1996, they were popular, and they routinely sold out America West Arena. But, as we know, the arena was not built with hockey in mind. It was only designed for basketball. In order to get a hockey rink fitted in the arena, a bunch of seats had to be taken out of use on one side of the arena. People sitting in that area could only see from the blue line up towards center ice and beyond, it brought the seating capacity down to 16,210, and it made the scoreboard look off centered. Because of this, the Coyotes wanted to have a proper arena built, but the powers that be who ran the arena wanted to keep them playing at America West permanently. The powers that be were also going to have the obstructed side remodeled so that there wouldn't be anymore obstructed seating. But the Yotes continued on with there own arena plans to have it built in Glendale. That was the start of the downfall. Bad ownership making poor decisions also didn't help either. The NHL and Gary Bettman for that matter, have been to soft on the Yotes for way too long. This year, something has to give. Either they finally can build an arena somewhere in the east valley or get them the out of Arizona and into a makert that will except them.

The records don't show that they "routinely sold out" AWA. But they did usually average a number near its "hockey capacity" (somewhere in the 16K range). I agree with you that they would have had better luck continuing in AWA, though. I actually think going over 17K capacity for the market was a mistake: You need enough seats to make it a major league proposition but "small enough" to be a tough ticket. A 16-17K seat arena either in downtown Phoenix or Scottsdale probably would have been the right recipe for a successful Coyotes franchise.

Towards the end of the video,, Jerry Colangelo said he anticipated that it would be a very successful franchise. It was an absolute failure from the time they arrived to the time they left. Pretty much being forced out of Arizona. As someone who was born and raised in Winnipeg and and fan of the Jets at that time, I don't know what the NHL was thinking. I get that the dollar was weak and it was a small market, but no effort was put in to save the team by the NHL, yet they did everything possible for the Coyotes. Just because its a big city, doesn't mean its a big market for hockey

Quebec, Southern Ontario, Connecticut, Milwaukee, Seattle and Portland would make MUCH better markets for the NHL than Phoenix. Sorry, but that's the way it is. You can BUILD a fanbase if you win consistently (see: Nashville), but that's hard to do for anyone. Especially in leagues where there are salary caps.

Think about it, all their glory years were spent in the WHA, a league that's been dead for 34 years. In their NHL existence as the Jets/Coyotes all they have is ONE division title? and prior to last season they went 25 years without winning one playoff series?
