    Seriously Professor! This is awesome! I look forward to your videos with more anticipation than episodes of The Walking Dead, the older seasons, not the more recent not as good ones. I am in the early stages of making up my own rules, a mix of D&D, ICRPG, DCC, and Dungeon World, not to leave out your ideas as well. One question I have for you, is what is typical, if there is such thing, longevity of your campaigns? In the past, my campaigns either did not really finish, or as the characters continued to grow and get stronger, would typically end in some sort of climactic battle with the fate of the kingdom/world/universe in the balance. I get the sense that if there is any similarity to your campaigns, that you also would have some bigger overarching bad guy, but that the end goals would be less lofty. I guess that the dark rider, insect guy is the seed for the bigger story. Oh yeah, also, most of the players I’ve played with in the past always come into the campaign with ideas and plans on who and what they want their character terms to be. By your system, the choice is not so much theirs as the character generation is random. Is it as simple as you telling them in a “session 0”, that they should leave their preconceived notions of what they want to play at the door and just deal with what fate delivers to them?

  • @DUNGEONCRAFT1

    @DUNGEONCRAFT1

    Thanks for the comment Grendel. There's a lot to unpack here....my main campaign is 25+ years old. I will run other stories concurrent to that main story--which is what the Caves of Carnage is--most of the same players portraying new characters. My campaign resembles the Marvel MCU, with the heroes defeating a villain and a new major villain/arc arising to take its place. Re: character choices--the occupation is random, but once characters achieve first level they can re-arrange their stats and play anything they choose. Thanks for watching!

    Lol. Good question. Both. One key technique is to ask them WHICH cave they'll enter in the NEXT session. But in the last session my player Barbara convinced the party to skip the final cave on level 2 and skip to level 3--just to screw me up. She even said it! "Let's skip his cave because that's the one he WANTS us to go in!" Still love her though.

    Great work, really like the detail. I had an idea you might like, I recently watched the movie called “Django, prepare a coffin” in where the main antagonist was wrongfully hung, survives the hanging, than poses as a hangman who who successfully fakes hanging many men who were also falsely accused. He, and the men, then planed to enact revenge on the person who had them hanged. Was a great movie, it got me researching other hangmen and lifestyles of well know executioners of the past. I was wondering how you might think a good way to implement the grim life of an executioner into an adventure. I was thinking first about a side quest like deal, but the more I thought on it they more I thought about an entire adventure! Any ideas?

    Another awesome video, thanks. The only thing I don't like about your (or Index Card RPG's) system is using the same target number for ALL actions inside a given room. This makes no sense since depending on the situation some actions should be much more likely to succeed (like sneaking past a distracted orc guard versus trying to persuade him to let you pass). This system also takes away any meaningful strategy from your Players since any action has basically the same chance to succeed. Otherwise, great!

    Another great video! Question though. I, myself, actually have a copy of ICRPG and am planning on using the target number system with my newly started 5e campaign. How do you account for very ridiculous rolls ("clown shoes ridiculous" to borrow a technical term from XDM) and make them difficult enough where they feel rewarding, yet still allow and promote player creativity? For example, what if the players want to try and convince the BBEG to join their adventuring party? Or seduce the dragon? Do you still use the room target number? Or do you add some sort of modification to account for the ridiculous nature of the roll? Again I don't want to stifle player creativity, but at the same time I don't want to make something crazy like that a super easy roll. This actually happened in my first session last week and the players almost convinced Klarg the bugbear to join them in the town of Phandalin and it was loads of fun! That being said, I'm worried that it was just a fluke because the party rolled really well. Any advice would be much appreciated! Thanks again, great content as always!!!

    I once designed an adventure for Dungeon Magazine that centered around an evil sorceress who was poisoning her husband to death. I got a fan letter from a DM who said one of his players was in love with her and wanted to know if he could convert her too good. I said, "Lesrah will go along with it, swear she's even up here evil ways, have the cleric baptize her, and spend every day in church praying. Then, exactly one year to the day she will smother that PC with a pillow. Because she's evil." Even a natural 20 cannot convince a creature do do something that is not in its nature. Scorpions sting. Tigers eat meat. Bugbears eat people. A natural 20 means Klarg is mildly amused by the PCs and isn't very hungry--so he doesn't club them to death. Cheers!

We rather play happy heroic heroes who can simply rest and heal as needed. If I would tell them they can loose a leg while healing, the next few sesions they will end up sitting at local inn being careful not to stab themselves with a fork.

    I know this video is two years old but I'm watching it for inspiration in my caves of chaos game. The only thing that bewilders me about this video. Is the part where you say it's easier to justify players killing monsters then humans. Honestly I don't understand this is the slightest. In every game I have run. It almost been seen as easier for players to murder humans on mass then monsters like orcs, kobolds, and the like. I'm just amazed that you came to that conclusion when I have had such a wildly diffrent experience over the years.
