Cave diving disaster with 4 minutes of air | The Shaft Sinkhole Diving Tragedy

8 divers entered The Shaft sinkhole in Mount Gambier, Australia for a day of diving. Two brothers, with their sister and cousin, were expert scuba divers and felt extremely confident in their ability to explore this cave with friends. In less than an hour, they would be facing the devastating reality of cave diving in narrow tunnels.

I can see why silting disheveled them completely. Saltwater rarely involves severe silt kickups no matter how much of a poor finner you are. But even a small mistake in your finning technique can completely obscure your vision in overhead environments especially on the way back since the silt kickups occur on your behind and while you keep gliding forward the water behind you has gotten entirely opaque with you having no idea. By the time you turn back you'll see this muddy and particulate filled water all around you which can easily put hardcore divemasters to sheer panic mode. They definitely had no idea about how different and technical cave diving is compared to open water.

Sadly those professional divers crossed that line and paid the ultimate price for it.

My uncle was one of the divers to bring the last 2 divers after they were discovered by a crew filming a documentary to the surface. I seen the footage and the morgue photos (being also in the police) they were actually intact and very well preserved because of the environment. After this tragedy the owner of the property closed it for good. It was only discovered when the farmer notice one of his cows fall down and struggle to get up on investigating the cave was discovered. Correction it actually took if I remember correctly 7 or 9 years for the last 2 divers discovery that was brother and sister

As a cave and diver myself (to study fish and invertebrates) I see so many of these videos and just shake my head. The second anything goes even remotely wrong, you abandon whatever you're doing and head back out. I don't care if you saw a fish that's a new species, you leave. You can describe a new species if you're dead, you can't announce a new diving record in a cave if you're dead, you can't ever dive again if you're dead. Be smart about it. Slight edit: Yes, I have actual official and proper cave and ice diving training and certifications. They aren't easy, I also got my deep sea diving training too. And most importantly, have a diving buddy, usually more than 1. 1 with you, 1 a bit back, and 1 at the surface to notify help. More divers is also more help to immediately spot danger depending on the situation.

This was in 1973. In 1979, I was doing 120 foot touch and go's as an Air Force Combat Controller as part of Pre-SCUBA it was called. We had to go 10 miles out to sea from Key Largo to get down to 120'+ given the shallow slope of the Continental Shelf there. We always did Decompression Dives with 2 or more large steel tanks. Would leave extra tanks at certain intervals for decompressing. When I got out of the military, I had to get my PADI Certification, to fill tanks with air, and was surprised they only taught no-decompression dives at the time. 63 years old now! Made it to PADI Rescue Diver and dove Cenotes near Cancun and Belize but never did cave diving. Didnt have a course back then, that I was aware of.

I had heard this story before but not so vividly through visual aids and reenacted animation like in this video. Very nice work.

Your Videos are great because - You dont sound like an ai voice, your voice sounds creepy like around a campfire. - The music sounds so tense and tragic. Like a heart beat but sad. -You dont have stock footage you have diagrams and little animations to explain whats going on These stories are hard to listen to but so entertaining.

These videos are great because they explain in a good time what takes others a hour to explain in a video and most us dont have that much free time. With that said I feel there is no such thing as a very exp. teen as teens tend to think they are invisible and still learning reasoning /risk level skills. A common thread in these disasters is lack of good communication, where everyone is on the same page. May they rest in peace. Its got to be one of the worst ways to die.

Truth. I feel less anxiety knowing the accidents occur from people deviating from plans, not following guidelines, and low air levels. Glad it's not a freak accident.
