Please feel free to comment and like! Discussion is definitely encouraged and odds are I will respond! I updated my Patreon to have actual rewards. I plan on many other projects such as a discord server for super fans, and I'm exploring different avenues in general. My goal is to make more videos than I ever had this year. link to my Patreon www.patreon.com/catpatispatcat

Found this video through your Cave restrospective. I mainly agree with you. Saturated with options, playing and enjoying the games is secondary when you're endlessly trying to get another shelf filled with games. Thats why I personnaly turned my attention to shmups because I enjoy learning them by playing again and again and I always get my heart beat through the roof facing the final boss on a single credit. One alternative is obviously to emulate the games so you're playing the game for its intended purpose. Not to end up on a shelf. In this sense, people playing games via emulations can enjoy the developers view and goals in a clearer way. Thanks for the interesting point of view in any case. !

Thank you! This is personally one of my favorite vids due to the subject matter. You can get hung up on collecting instead of playing the actual game.

Love this attitude. I've noticed I don't really approach games in the "let's play and finish this and then move on to the next one" consumer mindset, but I'm trying to find these rare games that I can really dedicate myself to for months and years. Recently, that's been the Tetris The Grandmaster series - one of the absolute peaks of game mechanics with an absurd skill ceiling. Bayonetta 1, Monster Hunter and the CAVE and Raizing games are also titles I keep picking up and trying to master them. I don't really enjoy cruising through massive "backlogs", but I'm searching for these special moments of mechanical intensity.

I'm happy to hear that! I went down a collecting rabbit hole myself and over time "filling in the shelf" really isn't a sustainable goal. Keep the stuff you love, sell/ remove everything else. Take care and Happy Holidays. 🙏

I like that my pretty extensive collection can basically fit in a single shelf. And I have a tube tv and like 10 retro consoles, and everything fits nicely in an 8x7 room. Good spot to be in.

You're not putting too much thought into this. If people thought about points like this in all aspects of life, video games or otherwise, they'd be happier. We live in an era where people put companies or media they dont care about above family members and friends because they think they should. Much like the person who buys hundreds of games they'll never play buys them because they think they should. Neither brings happiness, and youll be left woth a hole in your heart and soul. I want someone at my funeral to say a humorous story about a conversation we had or a game we played together where a memorable moment happened, not saying that I owned all the rarest stuff, and my Twitter profile showed I was apart of all the acceptable pronouns and activism causes, so I was "good". Good vid my friend. Keep it all up.

It's actually insane how much thought there is when you are decluttering a collection. Because you have to know what kind of games YOU enjoy. There are a lot of reviews and even friends that can absolutely love a game but it can end up being one you absolutely hate. It's strange to say it, but it's like you have to know yourself well enough to avoid buying into certain hype a game has.

This video needed to be a PSA at the beginning of Covid so the complex of, “I want my sh*t back”, calmed down and broke the US retro game market. I absolutely love the one to one of playing the cartridge, disc, or pcb in its original context but collecting/library building is some text book denial on what you buy and what you actually play. As a guy in my forties, you have to understand that’s it’s ok to pass on games you know are going to get pricey if you don’t catch them all every month. You end up spending all these micro minutes pondering eBay, proxy services etc. Then the time actually put into gaming is a disillusion.

Absolutely. Collecting is fun until you realize you're gathering games, not playing them.

  • @NaveedMohebbi

So I love collecting games. I think video game collecting and other forms of collecting is a legitimate hobby. If you have the means to do it and the desire to, I say by all means go ahead and enjoy yourself as long as it doesn't become a hoarder situation. So from that point of view I disagree with the initial basis of this video and I also disagree with some other small details like collecting in a series you love. HOWEVER, I totally agree with you when it comes to things like moderation, enjoying what you collect, playing games you actually enjoy, etc. It's so ironic because right before I watched this video I literally clicked out of purchasing a small handful of games because I asked myself "Do I really need these?". The answer for me was no. Right now, at the moment, I don't need that stuff. Maybe there will be a time later where I'll want to grab them again but now is not the time. I wasn't going to play them, they don't mean much to me, and they would just sit there. This is a reason why I really really don't understand people who have the mindset of going for complete collections. Unless you're a museum or something, there really is no need to own everything in a library especially when so many systems have so many bad games (I get it for games with smaller libraries but I'm speaking generally here). I will once in a while go through my things and pick out stuff that I don't care about and know I will never get to. Having a curated collection is much more important to me than having literally everything.

Love it. Thanks for sharing your opinion. Moderation was my over all goal with this. It was tricky to present this in all honesty. My goal was to present this as someone who loves video games. Because some people really discredit the hobby as if its it's completely useless. And I can see why, to some extent, especially the effect games can have on young men who don't have an aim in their lives. BUT to discret all of it is completely foolish. People have been inspired by games to act. Xenogears literally pushed me to buy Carl Yung books. Many Capcom and final fantasy titles pushed me to draw as a kid and over time I became very competent (a hobby I should return too.) Metal gear solid, man The messages in those games are just so possitive and thought provoking. And some of these amazing stories can ONLY be told through this medium, and would have failed completely if it was presented any other way. I think what people worry about, is the idea having less time for games. but ironically, if you just cutout the ones you were "eh" about it, and get some tasks out of the way during the time you would have used playing the "eh" game, you can still make time for the game you really enjoy. So if anything, nothing was really lost, in fact there was something gained, you got the important tasks done AND you get to enjoy yourself. Yeah this is a topic that's pretty expansive. I planned on becoming more involved on youtube again, streams even, to see if I can monetize this hobby of mine and during so, talk about these things. Anyway, thanks for watching, really appreciate it 🙏

Xenogears is actually a game I feel like I have to force myself to be able to finish it someday (probably because I didn't read a guide in time to get the items that gets you rare items and makes the end boss fight easy). I finished the main quest of elder scrolls 3 and 5 without much effort I played 4 a lot but never actually finished the main quest of that one.

Honestly, it took a few attempts for me to complete Xenogears. It's definantly archaic in a lot of ways. But one day I decided to stick to it. It was totally worth it. If there's any game that deserves a remake, it's that one. Playing it on a portable system helped too.

Definitely after the Covid lockdown prices for retrogames skyrocketed. Its why I'm thankful for the Game Pass. Sure I dont like giving Microsoft more money but I can play brand new and older titles on my pc or xbone for a cheap price on my own time. Plus when I actually have the cash, ill pick it up and enjoy it.

Happens to the best of us. Taking the time to ask yourself if you'll really enjoy it can actually be challenging, especially when everyone and reviewers are telling you it's good, and maybe it is...But not for YOU. We all have preferences, it's best to stick to that and do some research. I love metroidvania games, but I was not impressed with bloodstained ritual of the night. So even for things you think you'll like, it doesn't hurt to see what everyone is thinking, not just the positive reviews or the fans.

Currently in the process of doing this. Getting rid of rpgs that i convinced myself i would beat. Ive found myself playing run n guns, shmups, beat em ups, action games (like dmc, ninja gaiden), and SOME action rpgs. Just going to stick with the games ive genuinely enjoyed and stop chasing all these other games i cant and wont actually play.

@@cat-pat8310 You make a valid point. It's like the explorers of old searching for the Fountain of Youth. Simply cramming games onto a shelf without savoring the ones can have us continually chasing after some sort of satisfaction.
