Catholic vs Christian | “I am a Catholic. Why should I consider becoming a Christian?”

Catholic vs Christian, the two are not the same. So, the question must be asked, are Catholics saved? Today's questions is: "I am a Catholic. Why should I consider becoming a Christian?" In this video, Pastor Nelson uses the Bible to explain the differences between Catholics and Christians.

The entire premise is false and misleading. I have never heard a Catholic represent themselves as "not Christian." If some did to this confused pastor, they were as confused as the pastor. Catholics were the original Christians and that has never changed. Sola scriptura is a false, man-made teaching that was conjured up in the 16th century by Luther so he could deny the teaching authority of the RCC, given by Christ in the bible. Twisting interpretations of the bible by Protestants doesn't change the truth. What Luther spawned...a legacy of confusion and disunity with thousands of Protestant sects claiming different theologies but believing they adhere to the bible and biblical truth, begs much better questions. Are Protestants Christians, and exactly what is a Christian if many of them don't follow the teachings of Christ? The Holy Spirit does not sanction that confusion and disunity that sola scriptura spawned, and the resulting lies told about the Catholic church by many Protestants. Asking if it might be Satan inspiring that is a better question.

GOD loves you all and I like to lay out my thoughts on this topic: 1. Christians or Christianity meaning is “little CHRIST”. This term means someone who follow CHRIST - JESUS, and to elaborate what follow JESUS means that require someone to follow JESUS’s teachings. 2. The matter of whether Catholics say Peter is the first Pope. I think if the Pope serves the good of all people then he should be representation of Peter. 3. Catholics or Christians are both followers of Christ only if they read the Scriptures and practise them in their daily lives. 4. To be Christ followers, I think you must realise CHRIST has healed you from your previous sinful lives and now you publicly denounce that life and truly become his Disciplines through his teachings. 5. I have seen more Christians converted than Catholics and truly love their faith and I have seen my Catholics friends are now living in sins and go to church weekly and it grieves my Spirit to see my brothers and sisters living like that. 6. Christians or Catholics, we are all brothers and sisters in CHRIST. 7. Even they are atheist, be good to them because CHRIST said so. Peace be with you all.

All Catholics are Christians, but all Christians are not Catholic. We do not worship saints or put them above God, we ask for their intercession similarly to how we would ask a friend for prayers. This is not worship. You cannot be saved purely by faith or works. As St. Paul said, it is a journey. We can, be certain that we are saved, however, if we are following God's commands. Just because I have faith does not mean I can do whatever I want and still go to Heaven. I cannot go murder someone but have assurance that I am going to Heaven if I died the next second. If Christ established a Church, then whatever your personal beliefs are, you need to put them aside and follow the Church which Christ established. The Bible and historical records affirm that that is the Roman Catholic Church.

Yes, he is a human. He is bound to sin because of the world he is born into. But he has called upon the lord, by God’s grace we are saved; not of works. The point is that he doesn’t deserve salvation. But God gives him grace because God is loving and Jesus is the atonement for our sin. You’re right, he doesn’t deserve to be called Christian because he still sins. But Paul was a sinner, Peter was, Mary was, John was, we all were. We don’t do anything to earn God’s favor. I don't know what you're going to say about mediation, this already sounds very generic. Repeated prayers are condemned no where ever. You're probably going to repeat where it says vain repetition isn't worth anything, but who says all repeated prayers are vain? Just look at your heart, not that hard. Jesus used extremes to get His point across, do you believe you need to hate your father and mother as Jesus said? No. Have you ever called your dad father? Well if you have you've broken this. Paul even refers to himself as becoming like a spiritual father... "Even if you should have countless guides to Christ, yet you do not have many fathers, for I became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel." 1 Corinthians 4:15 According to you the Bible just contradicted itself. Why do you attack scripture? On confession "Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working." James 5:16 "one another" those are humans my guy... You probably don't even know what holy means. Yet the „first pope“ is not even mentioned by name by St. Paul in the letter to the Romans chapter 16. Peter is mentioned as a pillar of the church along with James and John in Galatians! „and when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given unto me, they gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship; that we should go unto the heathen, and they unto the circumcision.“ ‭‭Galatians‬ ‭2:9‬ ‭ The „rock“ was always Jesus Christ, never Peter, Romans 9:33, 1 Corinthians 10:4. The Holy Spirit always points to the jewish messiah Jesus Christ, and Christ chose jews as his apostles, Peter was a JEW. Many of the Popes were anti-semitic, no? Which spirit is waring against Israel, against jews, against Christ, against God? The spirit of Antichrist and Satan, who was a murderer and deceived from the beginning. @@dominicwinterberger1058 1. Peter was in Rome. “The Church here in Babylon, united with you by God’s election, sends you her greeting, and so does my son, Mark” (1 Pet. 5:13) Peter is writing from “Babylon”, which was a Christian code name for Rome (you wouldn’t let the Roman authorities know where the leader of the Church is, so you would disguise it with a code word). And we know he’s referring to Rome because it is used that way in non-Biblical works by other early Christians. And it fits the Whore of Babylon prophecy, I think. Furthermore, the Tomb of St Peter is in Rome and a large amount of archeological evidence show Peter was in Rome, and Early Christian testimony also backs it up. 2. Peter is the Rock, linguistics and grammar proves this. Plus, if Peter wasn’t the Rock, why was he originally named Simon, then his name changed to Peter, which means “Rock”? Plus, this verse is referencing an Isaiah verse. Where God says he is going to get rid of the old Steward of the Castle (essentially a prime minister), of Israel, and replace him with Eliakim. This Steward had authority over all Israel, second only to the King, and ruled in his stead. It was prophesied God would give Eliakim the “Keys to the House of David”, and what he shuts no one would open, and what he opens, no one would shut. This is what Jesus is referencing when He makes Peter Pope, He is giving Peter the Keys to the Kingdom of Heaven, He is giving Him the Power to Bind and Loose, like Eliakim was given the ability to open and shut, etc. Jesus is establishing His Chief Steward to rule in His Stead (earthly) until He returns, and Peter has rule over all the Church, under the King (Christ), just as Eliakim, who is a typology of Peter, ruled over Israel under the king. “Bind” and “loose” btw, were Jewish doctrinal terms that mean essentially permitting or disallowing. So Jesus is giving Peter doctrinal authority, specifically, before He gives all the Apostles doctrinal authority, meaning Peter has special authority. In Aramaic, I’m pretty sure that it was also a pun with the Peter is the Rock statement. Furthermore, the Keys were known to be the Keys to the Temple, as well as the Kingdom of Israel, indicating a priestly and kingly role. And the priests of the Temple eventually threw the Keys into the sky, according to Jewish belief, and a Hand from Heaven grabbed them. So, the Keys to a first century Jew, would have been very significant. Also, the Rock likely refers to the Foundation Stone of the Temple, which Jesus was probably linking to Peter as a sort of symbol of building the Church (I think, a little confused about this one). Rock doesn’t always refer to Jesus in the Bible. In this instance, Peter was Rock, the Rock upon which the Church is founded , but yes Jesus is our foundation. 3. Peter is always listed first in lists of the Apostles. Jesus says satan is trying to sift you all like wheat, but He says He is praying for Peter specifically to strengthen his brothers. Jesus tells Peter specifically to feed His Sheep, indicating he is to be pastor and leader of Christ’s Church. Early Christians stress Communion with Rome. And Ignatius of Antioch, an early Christian, a disciple of Saint John the Apostle, says Rome holds the “Presidency”. 4. The Jews themselves had a belief that Moses passed down a teaching authority to Joshua, which was passed to the Judges, then to the Prophets, etc. Jesus Himself references this Tradition in the New Testament: Matthew 23:1-3 “Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples: “The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach.” This is the tradition of Moses passing down a teaching authority, not found in the OT, but references by Jesus to be true. The “Seat of Moses”, was a Jewish Tradition, found in the Mishnah (originally all Oral), about a succession of teaching authority from Moses, not found in the OT. And Jesus seems like He affirms this when He says the Pharisees sit in Moses’s Seat, and He tells them they must obey the Pharisees’ teachings. Sound like Catholic Apostolic Succession of the Catholic priesthood. The New Testament talks about the Apostles finding a successor for Judas, and then Paul telling others to entrust his traditions to worthy men (Apostolic succesion), and says to essentially be careful. The Messiah was prophesied to also restore Israel’s judges, which He does in the New Israel, the Church. We even see that the early Christians support and testify to the offices of Bishop, Priest, and Deacon, and Apostolic Succession. And just like how Israel had a three tier priest system, Levite, priest, High Priest, Catholics have priest, Bishop, and a Pope.

I grew up in the Catholic Church, went to Catholic School and It was a very good experience. At '14' I was extremely sick. God healed me and I decided to read the whole Bible. At age 15 I had a powerful encounter with Jesus Christ while I was praying. I ended up going to a church that was basically Baptist and I became an overseas missionary and saw many come to Christ (thank God). Romans 10: 9: "If you shall confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised him from the dead, you shall be saved". Therefore all true Christians, including 'all true Catholics' and 'all true Baptists' must be saved; since all true Catholics confess that Jesus died for our sins, resurrected form the grave, and is coming again; as long as they truly believe that! I returned to the Catholic Church over 30 years ago and love it there. I love the homilies, the music, Mass times, the people, etc. I am very glad I returned. I believe that everyone who truly believes in Christ is saved.

"The Bible " doesn't say this - Paul writes this about "scripture" and certainly he wasn't referring to what he was writing as " The Bible " or even any part of "scripture ".... And beyond this obvious 'reality scope ' , if one is to make any kind of "pronouncement " from the scriptures , let him present '3 witnesses' to justify and support his personal 'opinion' ( granted we hear this same argument over and over again, as he obviously heard it and repeats again) without diligent consideration of this 'idea'. He's talking with the same 'mind set' as the mass of people who are confused about 'Catholic or Christian'. As usual - "Buyer beware" - before u buy into what's coming next ....

@John mclawrence Protestants INSULT God. Luther's imputed righteousness "...you are a dung heap covered with the snow white purity of Christ..." ...such that 1) God punishes the innocent (Jesus) and acquits the guilty (dung heap) where Luther's doctrine therefore IMPUTES INJUSTICE TO GOD 2) which therefore gives permission to the dung heap to continue being a dung heap as Luther assures "...you can commit sins 10,000 times a day and still be saved...",ie., 'once saved, always saved.' So, the trouble with you Protestant OSAS believers is 1) you excuse yr selves from taking any responsibility for yr sinful actions which leads to the absolute horror of the current perversion of the truth of Christ among 45,000 Protestant churches today 2) you pride yrselves in yr "surrender" to the righteousness of Christ justifying you & consequently you totally fail to see yr perversion of yr nature as God's creation, capable of receiving God's grace & responding to that grace to undergo a transformation of self from inside out. You consider yrself a dung heap. Catholics consider ourselves children of God created in God's image, born with free will & capable of transfiguring our lives by the grace of God. In Catholic faith doctrine, God punishes the guilty & acquits the innocent...GOD MAKES US INNOCENT through our REPENTANCE, FORGIVES OUR SINS & changes our character by pouring the Holy Spirit into our lives. So, I AM A Work-in-progress by the GRACE OF GOD through the HOLY SPIRIT working in me. And I am a Work-in-progress because I am led by the Holy Spirit in a DAILY Conversion to be the best I can be, as a child of God created in God's image. Is the Catholic Church Jesus’ original church? The quotes provided below are historical facts in reference to our early church which existed prior to Romes adoption of Christianity in 313 A.D. Church: * "Let no man do anything connected with the Church without the bishop. Let that be deemed a proper Eucharist, which is [administered] either by the bishop, or by one to whom he has entrusted it. Wherever the bishop shall appear, there let the multitude [of the people] also be; even as, wherever Jesus Christ is, there is the Catholic Church.” [St. Ignatius of Antioch - Letter to the Smyrneans 8 (c. A.D. 110)] Bishop, Priest & Deacon: * “Since, then, I have had the privilege of seeing you, through Damas your most worthy bishop, and through your worthy presbyters Bassus and Apollonius, and through my fellow-servant the deacon Sotio, whose friendship may I ever enjoy, because he is subject to the bishop as to the grace of God, and to the presbytery as to the law of Jesus Christ [St. Ignatius of Antioch- Letter to the Magnesians 2 (c. A.D. 110)]. Eucharist: * “Take note of those who hold heterodox opinions on the grace of Jesus Christ, which have come to us, and see how contrary their opinions are to the mind of God... They abstain from the Eucharist and from prayer because they do not confess that the Eucharist is the flesh of our Savior Jesus Christ, Ash that suffered for our sins and that the Father, in his goodness, raised up again. They who deny the gift of God are perishing in their disputes.” [St. Ignatius of Antioch - Letter to the Smyrnaeans 6-7 (c. A.D. 110)]. Scripture: * “[W]hoever perverts the sayings of the Lord for his own desires, and says that there is neither resurrection nor judgment, is the firstborn of Satan. Let us leave the foolishness and the false teaching of the crowd and turn back to the word that was delivered to us in the beginning.” [St. Polycrap of Smyrna - Letter to the Philippians 7 (c. A.D. 135)]. Sunday: * “But Sunday is the day on which we all hold our common assembly, because it is the first day on which God, having wrought a change in the darkness and matter, made the world; and Jesus Christ our Savior on the same day rose from the dead.” [St. Justin Martyr - First Apology 67 (c. A.D. 151)]. Actions/Works: * “We have learned from the prophets, and we believe it is true, that punishments, and chastisements, and good rewards, are rendered according to the merit of each man's actions. If it is not so, then all things happen by fate, and nothing is in our own power. If it is fated that this man be good, and this other evil, the former is not meritorious nor the latter blameworthy [St. Justin Martyr - First Apology 43 (c. A.D. 151)]. Apostolic Succession: * “It is within the power of all, in every church, who may wish to see the truth, to contemplate clearly the Tradition of the apostles manifested throughout the whole world; and we are in a position to reckon up those who were instituted bishops in the churches by the apostles, and [to demonstrate] the succession of these men to our own times; those who neither taught nor knew anything these [heretics] rave about.” [St. Irenaeus of Lyons - Against Heresies 3:3:1 (c. A.D. 189)] Baptism: * “The children shall be baptized first. All the children who can answer for themselves, let them answer. If there are any children who cannot answer for themselves, let their parents answer for them, or someone else from their family.” [St. Hippolytus of Rome - Apostolic Tradition 21 (c. A.D. 215)]. Confession: * “After this, one of the bishops present, at the request of all, laying his hand on him who is ordained bishop, shall pray this way: O God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. pour forth the power that is from you, of "the princely Spirit' that you delivered to your beloved Child, Jesus Christ, and that he bestowed on your holy apostles, who established the Church that hallows you everywhere, for the endless glory and praise of your name. Father, "who knows the hearts [of all]” grant this servant, who you have chosen for the episcopate, to feed your holy flock and serve as your high priest blamelessly night and day, and unceasingly turn away wrath from your face and offer to you the gifts of the holy Church. And that by the high priestly Spirit he may have authority "to forgive sins" according to your command.” [St. Hippolytus of Rome - Apostolic Tradition 2-3 (c. A.D. 215)]. Confirmation: * “The bishop will then lay his hand upon them, invoking, "Lord God, you who have made these worthy of the removal of sins through the bath of regeneration, make them worthy to be filled with your Holy Spirit, grant to them your grace, that they might serve you according to your will, for to you is the glory, Father and Son with the Holy Spirit, in the holy Church, now and throughout the ages of the ages. Amen." After this he pours the oil into his hand, and laying his hand on each of their heads, says, "I anoint you with holy oil in God the Father Almighty, and Christ Jesus, and the Holy Spirit." Then, after sealing each of them on the forehead, he shall give them the kiss of peace and say, "The Lord be with you." And the one who has been baptized shall say, "And with your spirit." On him he builds the Church, and commands him to feed the sheep [Jn 21:17], and although he assigns a like power to all the apostles, yet he founded a single chair [cathedra], and he established by his own authority a source and an intrinsic reason for that unity. Indeed the others were also what Peter was [apostles], but a primacy is given to Peter, by which it is made clear that there is one Church and one chair.... If someone does not hold fast to this unity of Peter, can he think that he holds the faith? If he deserts the chair of Peter upon whom the Church was built, can he be confident that he is in the Church?.” [St. Cyprian of Carthage - Unity of the Catholic Church 4; first edition (Treatise 1:4) (A.D. 251)]. Maybe this is just a modern take on the whole thing, is weird to see people argue about religion imo is not at all I imagine what christ wouldve wanted lmao. Sense the rightous and unrightous are saved. I feel like to some degree people are arguing about semantics and imo you get very little out of that. Im half way reading the bible and ive heard many times my family use christian and catholic interchangeably to some degree, but never cared to ask the question really. So went to church last sunday in celebration of mary. Really made me question for some reason because the priest said "as christians..." so i was like, am I really a christian or am i really a catholic. After watching this video i found out that more often than not i end up applying things from both sides. So i decided to ask a few priests from different churchers and did some more reading online. Turns out the reason i never really asked the question was because i intuitively understood that catholics are christians and there is no one or the other on that. purely just semantics at the end of the day, god is here for us and not necessarily to basically see us bicker about trivial differences between our brothers and sisters such as fruitless semantics over catholics and christians. I think this is more of a case to how our brothers and sister do it in islam. Islam being their religion and muslim being a practioner/follower of islam. Much like how catholics are christians. After 20 mns of reading many more comments i wonder if we are just getting confused.

This stupidity of trying to label Catholicism as a seperate religion than Christianity is only exclusive to americans... the very statement of "christianity vs catholisism" is nonsensical because it commits the category error fallacy, you are comparing a religion (Christianity) with a denomination of that religion (Catholisism), it seems like in the "united" states when they say "Christianity" they refer to Protestantism denomination only, while everything else is different religion, which is very bizarre and a normal person would be very confused with how americans think, but then again everything in that country is a complete pile of mess, no wonder why both north america and western europe are declining so rapidly (europe especially is being almost entirely replaced by Islam and muslim immigrants)

You need to do some serious studying on the true and infallible word of God to know who Christ really is. Once you learn who Christ is only then you can clearly see what a heresy, farce and downright absurd to think Catholics are just another denomination of the Christianity umbrella. These days the very simple, basic thing is very difficult and impossible for some to see and understand. For example: the word Christian mean one is a follower of Christ. Do you get that? I mean it’s simple right? Notice the CHRIST in Christian? Ok now if a Christian is a follower of Christ Himself, the Christ of the Bible of course, how do you reconcile with all that Catholics don’t follow and don’t believe that is of Christ? Even simpler, CATHOLICS DON’T FOLLOW CHRIST!!!! Therefore not Christian. Catholics believe a different gospel, certainly not the gospel of Christ. Catholics are in full and blatant disobedience of God’s word. Please, please stop sounding ignorant and educate yourself before you say such ridiculous things. But most of all read the Bible that’s where you’ll find tthe truth. Don’t even believe me, read for yourself and believe for yourself. Because you, yourself will stand before God Almighty on judgement day and give an account for your refusal to be a follower of Christ. Not me or anyone else will matter. 1 John 2:4 If anyone says “I know Him” but does not keep His Commandments, is a liar and the truth is not in him.

Do you not know Satan believes in Christ more than anyone of us? Now, he couldn’t possibly be considered a Christian, could he? If they claim to believe in Christ, then it’s most definitely not the Christ of the Bible, it’s a different Christ. If you read the Bible, especially the New Testament and you compare that word to what Catholics believe and follow, you cannot possible still say the same thing. For example; Salvation, atonement, sanctification, idolatry, prayer, repentance of sin, etc……oh my, the difference is phenomenal. Catholics, Mormons, Jehovah witnesses all believe in A Christ and therefore consider themselves Christians. If Catholics times and times again are proclaiming their faith in Christ, who are you to deny us this blessing? This is not our first rodeo to be honest. Remember that early Catholics were martyred by the Romans for proclaiming their faith in Christ, so we are not estranged to this. This by the way made them Christians by definition, I wanted to throw that in there one more time. For this reason, as contemporary Catholics, we will be remissed if we simply let other denominations that emerged from the sacrifices of those early Christian-Catholics tell us who we are "supposed" to believe in. Salvation as a Christian is faith alone in Christ alone “ no works “. Roman Catholics believe you need faith plus works. Hence not the way to salvation. Christ did ALL the work! It’s a free gift from God. If we don’t think the work Christ did was enough and that we need to add too it, we are not saved( catholicism) it’s all in the Bible but to understand the message it needs to be translated correctly and not transliterated( catholicism ). I would highly recommend listening to pastor John MacArthur for the truth.

@@Natural-Causes I do agree with you in that the way to salvation is through Christ. Christ said it himself : "I am the way the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father except through me". There is not a single Catholic in this forum who will disagree with that. That's what make us Christians. Everything you added past that doesn't have a reference in the Bible. For instance, when you say that you don't need to do any "works" as a Christian. I humbly disagree with you. Think about it, if the first Christians (the early Catholics) simply accepted Christ's gift and lived their life without doing any so called "works", you and I wouldn't know who Christ is and we wouldn't be saved. Through their evangelism, through preaching, spreading the good news, and dying as martyrs we came to know who Christ is. Today that translates to following the 10 commandments, loving our brothers and sisters like Christ loved us... you know the "works" that makes us Christians. I don't know who Pastor John Macthur is or what he said (I'm sure he's a good man), but I know that Christ said in Matthew 5: 13-16: “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out". The pope didn't say that, nor did a pastor say that- it came from Christ himself.

Amen." After this he pours the oil into his hand, and laying his hand on each of their heads, says, "I anoint you with holy oil in God the Father Almighty, and Christ Jesus, and the Holy Spirit." Then, after sealing each of them on the forehead, he shall give them the kiss of peace and say, "The Lord be with you." And the one who has been baptized shall say, "And with your spirit." So shall he do to each one [St. Hippolytus of Rome - Apostolic Tradition 21-22 (c. A.D. 215). Peter’s Authority: * “The Lord says to Peter: "I say to you,' he says, “that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of hell will not overcome it. And to you I will give the keys of the kingdom of heaven. [Mt 16:18-19]. If he deserts the chair of Peter upon whom the Church was built, can he be confident that he is in the Church?.” [St. Cyprian of Carthage - Unity of the Catholic Church 4; first edition (Treatise 1:4) (A.D. 251)].
