Catholic OCD: Is it mortal sin?

Is it really mortal sin or is it more accurately the fear of mortal sin? It is important to know and to understand the difference. In this presentation the requirements for mortal sin are outlined. In addition, helpful context and direction is also provided that might be useful and effective in your management of the disorder.

What a truly exceptional video! It touches upon a subject that is not often spoken of in Catholicism, at least on internet platforms that are broadly accessed. As has been stated before, the emotional frenzy induced by scrupulosity likely contributed to Martin Luther's schism. It is my belief that scrupulosity CONTINUES to lead to the loss of Catholics from the Church. God bless you! You are the prototype of one who is "paternal". Father, I hope that you are involved in the education of men on their paths to becoming priests. Oh my, what a wonderful man you are!

Thank you, Fr. Tom. You have helped me to better understand the nature of mortal sin, and to realize that being overly scrupulous is an unnecessary burden that one willingly chooses to carry on one's shoulders. God Bless You.

Thank you so much Father for these videos that you’re making. You have really helped me understand my scrupulosity. With a better understanding & through prayer my paranoia has decreased & I’m working on not being so hard on myself. God knows my intentions & he knows that just because a negative thought pops up, doesn’t meant that’s how I feel . Thank you again & I’m looking forward to future videos. God bless 🙏❤️.

Father, I feel as if you are saving my life - one video at a time and I thank you! Because of my OCD that I have had since childhood - I'm now 63, I have missed Mass many times for various reasons stemming from this illness. I know that missing Mass is a mortal sin and so I feel horrible and guilty all of the time. I pray the Rosary and I pray the Spiritual Communion prayer - but I am afraid I'm on the road to hell.

I believe that I have OCD and have scrupulosity but should I get a diagnosis from a doctor to be sure? When I think about things I have done, I just do whatever it is without thinking whether it is (or may be) mortal. But years later I may decide that the action was in fact mortal.

You cannot decide years later that something may have been a mortal sin. You have to know what you are choosing at the time that you make the decision. It does not just “come to you” years later. That is your OCD
