Actually it was given to France by Austria when they had a succession crisis, so that they appease the Big Blue Blob. King Louis XV put his father-in-law (who had just been kicked for the second time from the Polish throne) to rule the duchy because the local population wasn't very fond of France at the time (having been occupied half of the time for the last century). But yes, Lorraine was officially annexed when Louis got the duchy by inheritance when Stanislas died.

+Isprikitik burkabush - Ehm, not entirely. While the latter part of your comment is entirely true, it is worth bearing in mind that sudden reversals of alliances were not uncommon in this time period. After all, just a few years earlier there was the Diplomatic Revolution, possibly the greatest and most sudden such reversal in history. As for Russia winning against Prussia, that is true if you look at the battles they fought against one another, but if you look at the war as a whole, it was more a matter of Russia taking a chance to invade Prussian territory while the Prussian army was busy fighting the Austrians and the French further south. If any country gets to take credit for the Franco-Austro-Russian alliance doing relatively well at this point in the war, it'd be Austria, not Russia.

  • @Blazo_Djurovic

Robert Faber I'm not as informed on this war, but skiming through some articles, while the Russians did have massive logistical problems and Austrians did pull their weight a lot, the Russian army was KEY to several victories including Friedrich's probably greatest defeat where 40k Russians and ~15k Austrians broke his army. They were akin to a BIG stick. Kind of unwieldy but devastating if it connects and a threat that forced F to divert forces. And at the point where Elizabeth died, Prussians were on the ropes, the Russians finally had secured their logistical situation via Baltic and Berlin was about to fall AGAIN. It seemed even the Brits were seeing the writing on the wall and were threatening to pull out. With all those tens of thousands of RUssians gone F was on a much more equal footing with his enemies.

Блажо Ђуровић Oh, absolutely. I wouldn't for a moment say that the Russians had little or no impact on the war, because they most certainly did. However, they were not in my view the most important of the opponents of Prussia. They certainly could have been, and by saying Austria was more important I don't mean to imply Austria was inherently superior to Russia at this point, but the Austrian front was where Frederick sent the bulk of his army, so they got to have a much bigger role to play.

Negative sides(his alcoholism, his inability to be mature in situations that really demanded it, and one of his reasons for ending the 7 years war was to start yet another war that for Russia was pretty pointless). I was wondering if I could find somebody else who'd already pointed that out or if I had to comment myself... Also, the phrasing there is rather funny, because while Peter III might have had "all of Russia's might" on land, the Russian navy in the Baltic Sea wouldn't have stood a chance against the Dano-Norwegian navy, which at this point was stilll one of the most powerful navies in Europe. That seems to me rather a key point, as Peter intended to invade Denmark by sea from Pomerania.

Adam Commenting It was actually the reason why a few decades later, Britain pre-emptively declared war upon Denmark-Norway just in case they would align themselves with Napoleon. The British Royal Navy was easily the most powerful navy in the world at that point, but they were afraid that if Napoleon could command the French, Spanish and Dutch navies (which he already did), which were arguably the second, third and fourth most powerful navies in Europe, and he also managed to get his hold on the Dano-Norwegian one, then the combined force of those navies would be too much for even the Royal Navy to deal with. Suffice it to say that Britain managed to fight the Danes on their terms, and Denmark never again recovered as a naval power.

Normally, I disapprove of adultery, but Katya's situation wasn't exactly normal. As the wife of the soon-to-be Emperor, her primary role in court was to produce an heir, and the longer she took to do so, the less she'd be able to rely on her intellect and love of country to retain favor. Her husband didn't exactly help things along, either, if her accounts are to be believed, but unlike her, he had the luxury of actually being the Emperor, so his failure to produce an heir wasn't as bad for him. As the Church forbade divorce (and still does), that wasn't an option, either. Swearing a monastic oath would have gotten her out of the marriage, but considering what her mother had shown her in Episode I, I think most people could forgive her for not being keen on following that route.

Actually, both of those Tsars are probably overly hated in history. Both lost, and had their reputations trashed. Tsar Nicholas was simply an ineffective ruler in a time of great turmoil. Peter, was assassinated by his wife and she had to come up with a reason for it. Needless to say I do not buy everything she wrote about Peter (she is the exclusive source of information about their relationship). Here is what I wrote earlier- Maybe when y'all do a "lies" video on Catherine, y'all could mention the other side of the story. Catherine is the one who wrote the history, because she won. But her interpretation of the history and what happened do not make much sense. For one, she called Peter lazy. In his 6 months of rule he issued over 200 edicts (that is more than 1 edict a day, and some of those edicts vastly changed Russia), reformed the Russian army, concluded a peace treaty, and launched a new war. That is a lot to do in several years. Also, it could be argued that the war against Denmark was much more valuable than the war against Prussia. If Russia had beaten Denmark then that would have given Russia valuable access to western Europe. Beating Prussia would have given Russia .... farmland (mostly). Not to mention, keeping a regional superpower, like Prussia, in place to counter the power of Austria, Sweden, and France, would be valuable for Russia. Plus, the peace treaty put the English (then the most powerful nation on earth, and a massive trading partner) on the Russian side. In addition, many of Peter's reforms pissed people off because he was trying to modernize Russia. He did things like, make it illegal for a nobleman to kill a serf. Obviously that pissed the nobility off. Unfortunately, history is generally written by the upper class so we cannot tell how popular Peter was among the poor. In all honesty, no matter how great Catherine ended up being, (spoilers) she assassinated her husband to take power, and likely told outright lies about him in order to spoil his reputation, and make her seem like the good guy.

I'm going to say Kolya was the better Emperor. Don't get me wrong, he was far from a good ruler, and I agree with the position that his general political views were obsolete, but at least he didn't tick off his own court and spouse so badly that they assassinated him less than a year after his coronation. His lack of pragmatism was his downfall, too, just as was the case with Petya, but my take on him is that he had a better grasp on court politics than Petya did. It's easy to talk about lofty ideals and good intentions, but none of that matters if your court hates you so much that you're assassinated mere months after becoming Emperor. Also, personally, I think Liza deserves a series of her own. Her own rise to power is quite a story. Heck, the entire period between Peter the Great's reign and Catherine the Great's reign (called the Age of Palace Coups in some circles) could make for an interesting series. I'm more interested in an EH series on the Time of Troubles, though.

Eh. From the Russian Army standpoint, at that time, they weren't really too impressed by the Prussians. They just got done whooping Prussians all over Central Europe, and the fact that not only did their new non Russian speaking Emperor pull out of the war just as they were about to destroy Friedrich, he helped him AND started introducing or threathening to introduce/force Prussian customs on them. They were LIVID!.

Pyrus FlameWielder Who really knows. On one hand Prussia would have suffered a pretty big blow to it's drive to expand, Austria would have probably regained some if it's authority in Germanies and Russians would have probably gotten their piece of the pie. On the other hand despite it all Peter would still be on the throne and while his handling of the war was one reason for his eventual removal it was not the only reason. He was simply too weak a ruler and completely disconnected from the people he was ruling. In a way it might have turned out worse in the long run because he could have clung to the power longer, fucked more things up and prevented Cat from getting her hands on power.

Probably something we'll hear more about in the Lies episode. I can't say for certain, but the palace on the left around the 0:34 mark looks to me like the Summer Palace. If I could find more pictures of it, I could be more certain, but that's kind of hard to do when dealing with a building that was demolished before cameras were around. As a side-note, there actually was a brief time after Peter the Great's reign that Moscow was the capital. Peter II moved the capital there in 1728 only for it to be moved back to St. Petersburg in 1732 by Anna.

While this is true, Empress Elizabeth was in fact staying in Moscow at the time that Sophia went to meet her for the first time. Several of my sources confirmed that Sophia's exact route was Riga to St Petersburg to Moscow, because she was trying to catch up with the court. In Moscow, Empress Elizabeth was staying in the Annenhof Palace (and she made my life difficult by changing its name to the Golovinsky Palace literally five days after meeting Catherine - I had a heck of a time verifying the name of the place!). That palace burned down in the 1900s so I couldn't find a picture, so we modified our Winter Palace design to approximate it. -Soraya

Basically as I understand it many many people at the time continued to call the rulers Tsars, both in Europe and in Russia. In fact Catherine will actually style herself as Tsaritsa of everything but Russia proper (For example when she takes of Crimea she becomes Tsaritsa of Tauric Chersonesos). So technically technically she's both an Empress and a Tsaritsa! -JP

Tsar means Emperor in Slavic languages. It's read with a hard C as in Cesar which is the word from which it stems since it's a title patterned along the Roman Imperial titles. It's part and parcel of the whole thing where Russia took up the title of defender of Orthodox Church after the fall of Eastern Rome and considered itself in a way inheritor of the Constantinopleian Roman Empire. Peter started calling himself probably Imperator so that Europeans could not use the Russian version of his title Tsar and translate it as King and treat him as another King or even prince when in fact he considered himself an Emperor and therefore equal to the likes of the Hapsburg Emperor's of the Holy Roman Empire and an inheritor of the Eastern Roman Empire.

You guys kind of rushed through Cathrine's years before Elizabeth's death. There was some serious political drama going on during that period, including amongst things a conspired coup attempt against Elizabeth by Bestuzhev that Cathrine was involved in, which in turn almost got her banished to a monestary. Not to mentione some of the shenanigans that went on within her private court.

Gonestly, it's way more understandable with Elizabeth's backstory and Russia in 1721-1762. She was the daughter of Peter the Great and, when her mother died, her will said that she will be the next empress after Peter II.But the throne was given to her cousin, Anna. And Anna hated her. During Anna's reign, Elizabeth was in half-exile, but was still running some family bussiness. When Anna died, she left Empire to 1 year old Ivan IV and her lover Biron, who was pretty open about not being the biggest fan of Russia (but was still smart enough to hide it, unlike Peter) and was often portrayed as an evil genius of Cardinal Richelieu level, but without all good parts (he probably wasn't, but he wasn't exactly good guy either). All that shit happened in 12 years. All that shit happened because Peter didn't have a son that could've taken a throne.

You're welcome. Romanovs' history is interesting and shows how screwed monarchy can be when there's no conrete heir. I also forgot the most important point. Peter the Great was the first emperor to declare that current emperor should write the will, where he declares their heir. Peter being Peter, he was pretty much the only emperor who didn't write one until Paul the First (Catherine's son mentioned in this video) decided 'Nothing good come out of this law. DELETE!'. Which pretty much banned girls from the throne. Not helped by the fact that Paul apparently decided to put all the work in making children his predecessors didn't and had 10 (!) children, four of which were boys and only one girl died during childhood.

Well she had to have an heir to secure her link to the throne. And with him almost dying the risk of no heir was probably feeling pretty scary.
