Well she was probably Japanese so even more ironic that Catherine tried to make it sound Chinese🤣🤣🤣 I would laugh my self, and I’m Asian. And it’s funny because it’s not mean spirited. Had she painted her skin yellow and pulled her eyes, it would be a different story.

This totally depends on the context and person. Sadly many hides behind humor and comedy to justify racism etc. Just because you find it fun t doesn’t mean it is. But again depends. I live Catherine and yes this IS hilarious because it plays on stereotypes people how about different languages and cultures, and it’s not mean spirited. I’m Norwegian and Filipino and I love this! And what you Brits find offensive isn’t what we here in Scandinavia find offensive. It could easily be done here today without issues.

She says she can because she did a TEFL (teach English as a foreign language). Which in of itself is amusing because it’s just a very basic, short course of how to method teach English to a foreigner and would no way on earth qualify her to translate. But her character always has ideas about her abilities that are waaay above her pay grade. 😂😂😂

Allo Allo ran for 9 seasons and was sold to 56 other countries. Now we would be hung drawn and quartered but it is hilarious. Fawlty Towers only ever made 13 episodes and was aired 40 years ago. Basil insults every nation under the sun but again sold to 80 other countries. Monty Python. Laughing is not a crime.

You are the first person I have seen react to this sketch and laugh at all her translations, good for you. Of course it’s not done today but it does make people laugh, I only wish there was a white translation bit added, taking the p…s of the white American/English culture that would have made it equal and extremely funny. We have to be honest and admit that cultural humour is found funny by all but maybe that particular culture having fun poked at at the time. We need to laugh at ourselves and our idiosyncrasies as well as to deeply honour and respect them and this from all cultures and nations, we share this world and it is not balanced or fair but we can share laughter on all levels as long as it is not cruel or unkind.

Basically, Eddy, she was showing herself up at being really inept and useless as a translator. There is a very old British adage about Brits not knowing other languages abroad, so you just keep talking louder to them in English in case they are hard of hearing, lol! So as you see, her TEFL she did was quite useless - so she tried the easiest way she knew . . . As for more laughs with Cath, try the 1-2 main compilations of her Posh Wife sketches, m8 . . . both of them run less than 12 mins I think . . . also hilarious, too!!! I'll be watching for these from you now, m8 . . . Enjoy!

It is a SAD reflection on today's society that we cannot laugh at ourselves. We have to walk on egg shells these days and that is a BAD reflection on our society. A tinder box waiting to explode.

A lot of people today just can't seem to understand satirical comedy anymore. It's a great shame for people that still do.

This absolutely _could_ be done today. It's not too far removed from the sort of thing Sacha Baron Cohen does. Tate is smart. It works because she's taking the piss out of accents, not races and the presence of her boss and his reaction is key. It's frigging hilarious. Please have a look at Detective Sergeant Sam Speed. You'll _love_ it!

"Comedy has changed so much" Yeah, it's become less funny, a time before everyone got offended by everything

Some of the comments don’t seem to understand that this isn’t “back in the day when we could all laugh at each other and people didn’t get offended’. It was definitely very offensive back then to do this which is why she makes a joke out of it. You laugh because you can’t believe she’s actually doing it. So the joke is actually mocking racists rather than at the expense of minorities or foreigners. Watch an episode of Curry and Chips. That’s something that definitely could not be made today. It’s just racist for racist sake. It’s not funny. It’s just mocking ethnic minorities. You will absolutely cringe watching it. The Catherine Tate show including this skit could easily be made today her character is the joke here and her character is a racist.
