The Caterham Academy is in it's 26th year and and now with over 1000 drivers taking part, it’s considered one of Europe's most successful novice driver series - and it's probably the most affordable, proper racing, money can buy.
Paul Woodman, the 2021 Media driver, takes a deep dive into the Academy car and everything you Everything you need to know about competing in the Academy Racing Series!
It all started in 1957, with English automotive design engineer and inventor, Colin Chapman, when he built a lively little two-seater sports car. He wanted owners to be able to experience the pride of building their own car and then take it on track - and came up with the mantra “Simplify, then add lightness” and the Seven was born.
Over sixty years later, Caterham still adheres to the original philosophy and turns out variants of the Seven with a line-up of models that range in power from 127hp to 314hp, with each car weighing just over 500kg.
The Academy car has a tuned Ford Sigma, 1600cc, 4 cylinder, naturally aspirated engine, with a maximum power output of 127hp @ 6,800, with 150nM of torque and weighs around 550kgs.

I wish they would sell Caterham's in South Africa. We have the perfect weather for a car like this, but then again we have one of the highest hijackings, yeh nevermind

It’s taped so if the glass gets smashed the pieces don’t litter the track. If the rear lenses were glass they’d need to be done too
I wish to be so succesfull in live, so i can aford and buy this course to my child :D and my self, next to him :D

Caterham Academy - where people run thinner cages to gain an advantage. Where competitors carry on running with a knowingly burst radiator and dump coolant all over the track. Where people protest another car and get it excluded because it didn't have a rear reg plate on it Barring the defunct VTEC challenge, can't think of a worse series.
Thinking of buying a hot hatch and annoying everyone on the busy roads by driving like a prat ! Buy one of these instead and learn how to really drive ! Plus, just like sailing, you won’t have any money left for drugs !

BRSCC Sticker shown as a detail,.... How scruffy and lazy to leave the huge bubble in the middle of it. Details is the difference between car builds and sadly the details obviously have been overlooked.

It's a common misconception by those who don't drive Caterhams. Typical drivers are mostly oblivious to road conditions and other drivers, are reactive and often too late. Caterham drivers are very aware and proactive. This is bourne out by number of deaths per car produced compared to typical (say) M3 driver, with heavy right foot and little skill....
