Cate Blanchett & Todd Field Break Down Filming TÁR’s Incredible Oner
Ойын-сауық
If you want to see one of the finest movies of the year and a career best performance from Cate Blanchett, you need to race to your local movie theater and see writer-director Todd Field’s TÁR. I cannot emphasize enough how blown away I was by Blanchett’s incredible performance and Field’s brilliant script. Not only did Field shine a light on what happens behind the scenes of orchestras around the world, but he crafted a modern tale about the #MeToo movement, and the examination of power in our society.
In the film, Blanchett plays Lydia Tár, who is at the height of her career and the conductor of a major German orchestra. As she is preparing for a live performance of Mahler’s Fifth Symphony and a book launch, her life begins to unravel due to some of her previous decisions. For more on what the film is about, you can read Brian’s glowing review.
Shortly after seeing the film, I got to speak with Cate Blanchett and Todd Field. They talked about filming the incredible oner where Blanchett is teaching a group of students and why Field wanted to film it all in one take, why it was such a challenge shot to get right, how Field wrote the script for Blanchett without telling her, and what someone should watch if they’ve never seen their work.
Watch what they had to say in the player above, or you can read our conversation below. TÁR is now playing in select theaters and opening in more cities this weekend.

Cate Blanchett is brilliant in the film!!!
fully agree that Tár is unlike anything i've ever seen. it's such a totally original idea and totally original execution. to call the creativity "refreshing" is such an understatement.
I was debating walking out during the first 20 minutes. Glad I stayed. There is a LOT going on in this, much of it hits you minutes or hours after you see it. Blanchett is awfully good.
This movie looks great and Cate Blanchett is a legend.
Todd and Cate have actually worked on the same film before Tár; Kubrick's 'Eyes Wide Shut'. Todd played the pianist Nick Nightingale and Cate provided the voice (uncredited) for the masked woman at the mansion that Tom Cruise goes to.
All 3 of Todd Fields directorial films are masterpieces. Little Children is hilarious and heartbreaking, In The Bedroom has some of the most impressive lead performances I've seen. Tar is somehow even better.

Todd field looks so cute he laughs lol
Why do so many gifted and truly brilliant people in film have so much difficulty articulating thoughts verbally? It's many times so painful to watch. Why can't they just "pretend" they are in a scene from a movie?
it's so funny that this interviewer has basically adorned his set with the same type of artless gamer/nerd shlock that the film weaponises to twist the knife in the protagonist in its final shot
