Catching tuna Maldivian style - Greenpeace

Globally, tuna stocks are heavily over fished. But the fishermen in the Maldives - catching their skipjack by pole and line - are giving their skipjack tuna a brighter future.

    Fish 4 ever was the canned tuna company but was only sold in the UK if you don't live there you could probably buy it on amazon or request for a local organic store to try to sell it. Maybe even get your community to sign a petition and ask for that product at most of your stores would be great for that company and the environment hope this helps

    For all you people nagging about of they should use a net, a net would catch mostly bie-catch (fish they don't want and would throw back dead) and it would destroy reefs. With the poles there is almost zero bie-catch. I know this because I live in nove-scotia and have oceans as a class on its own.

    I think this is a much better method than the nets so they do not have any bie-catch so all the sharks that would have been caught if they used a net are still roaming free.

  • @doodl4898

    @doodl4898

    This method of fishing is better than nets so animals that are not targeted do not get caught in a net and usually, the animals that are not wanted that are caught in a net are out of water for too long before they throw them back, so basically they are throwing a dead carcass into the water. That is why this method is better, if you are against bie-catch.

    This is a good educational video, I don't see why people make such a big fuss over it. It's pole and line caught which is slightly time consuming than net catching although it provides us with a better sustainable approach for future stocks. Tuna is one of the most favourite fish in the U.K, we consume over 12bn tins a year and it's got to come from somewhere like the Maldives.

    Great work guys!! Fantastic to see sustainable eco friendly fishing for a change! This style of fishing doesn't catch unwanted catch,which gets thrown out and wasted with nett fishing.Also,net fishing nets the whole school,never to be seen again,where with poling,some fish escape and the school will grow again in numbers. I have bought skipjack tuna before from coles and it tastes fantastic! Keep up the great work lads,I'm happy to buy these tasty tuna off you by the bucket!
