Catching TRADITIONAL FOOD for Local Elders at the TOP of CAPE YORK | Australia
A WILD DAY at the tip of Cape York, Australia. Such an abundance of food up here from Turtle eggs to fresh fish. I join the local boys today to learn about an age old tradition of catching food for the elders in the community that taught these boys to hunt.
Its amazing to witness the community aspect of this ancient culture. Come along for the ride guys and if you enjoy the journey make sure you subscribe for weekly episodes.

Man, that was one of the most fun episodes you have done I reckon, so so cool. Those legends are awesome, thanks for sharing once again mate, bloody breezy day, but you guys made the most of it. I have been around that area before, that made me miss it sooooo much. I agree with you 100% about the netting of these remote rivers purely for profit, I have seen the same kind of indigenous fishing practices you showed us today in other countries too, subsistence fishing to feed the family, yes technology has changed but the traditional custodian’s attitude towards sustainability is actually something all of us could take more note of. Once again, thanks for your hard work Nath, this series is shaping up very nicely. 🤙🏽🤙🏽

It seems so clear to to me because im out there witnessing the attitude towards sustainability and the practices in place to uphold it. there are alot of negative comments from people who just dont understand that side of it so its nice to hear from you Jay, that you see whats happening. Especially that youve seen it in other countries too. It doesnt matter what tools youre using to get the feed as long as you just take what you need rather than using those tools to rape, pillage and profit. Thanks mate, hope youre well down there

I don’t think I could ever get hungry enough to walk that net across that mouth, absolutely nuts! But yes mate, how nature is so connected with the changes of time and tide govern their individual movements, the Crocs know when the Turtles are hatching and coming all that distance to feed. Just like the east coast Mullet run, and so many other seasonal changes in Nature happening all around us, just as we think we understand what’s happening, it teaches us how much little we know. But how much our Country’s people have learnt over tens of thousands of years as traditional custodians and can teach us true sustainability. Great viewing Nath! 👍🏽

What you guys are doing is sustainable by a long way , as in thousands of years , problem is when commercial operations are not sustainable due to massive volume operations to justify profitability vs costs 👍

Blimey that was a wild one Nath, we totally agree with what you say, just catch what you need to much over catching we've seen over here, over fishing!. WE as you know hunter gatherers over feed on the neighbours veggie patch and little does he know Koi carp...do you know he really wants to meet you our mentor 😉. Anyway Cheryl is now going with stick in hand to see if he has turtle eggs and don't know it yet....hmmm think she will be gone a while🤔. Take care for now. The Wild Screechers....Hello Mel👍

Great episode, mate. And to answer your question. The best boat is The one you've got make the most of it. In my opinion, there is no perfect one boat. I do agree with you that Aboriginal people used to make nets. But I do not think they are efficient as the new mono nets 👍👍👍👍
@WildReaches
11 ай бұрын
Thats it, just have to get out there and use the boat you have. Or have three boats, wink wink
Galiwinku mob call it going fishing for health food. The community stores generally used to have lots of junk food so going out for health food was logical for me. The middle aged women were absolute champs catching mud crabs.

@WildReaches but there are tourism opportunities for our indigenous community with pave roads.. tourists would love to taste turtle 🐢 eggs 🥚 dugong meat ,buffalo 🍖 and bush Turkey and yes bullocks.. and turtle 🐢 meat... hmmmm.. I think a paved road would bring opportunities and prosperity for our indigenous peoples 🤔.. it is after all capitalistic economic system you know. 🤔 and hunting crocodiles 🐊 😎 make big money 💰 too .😁
Now I know why people get eaten by crocs up north!! Bloody crazy walking out and checking that gill net. Crocs love stealing fish out of gill nets!!

very dumb walking into that water at the river mouth of the Jardine river, i use to live up there. i would say these guys net that same spot when they go out which is another silly move because it only take 1 croc that is learning from their behaviour of getting in the water there to net. could do it 100 times just fine thinking they are untouchable then on that 101st time get taken then the search an rescue people have to live with seeing their torn up bodies but they don't think about the people that would have to search for them, pretty reckless.

I saw plenty of happy dogs Raymond, most of the fellas I spent time with had dogs and treated them well as they’re their hunting companions
Hmm how sustainable is it to leave 6 eggs behind from a clutch of 80 when survival rates are so low even without human predation. All unique native Australian fauna should be protected from everyone and only domestic or ferral animals consumed. Eat a ferral, pig, buffalo, bantang or horse, there's lots more of them about and they damage the environment. Hunting with modern technology is not traditional hunting, its hunting with modern technology and should be banned for all to protect unique native fauna.
