Too cool! I've never seen these before!
Cheers from Hawaii. We call those Kona Crabs in the islands and they don't get as big as the ones you caught but they truly are some of the best tasting crab, really good raw too. Aloha and thanks for a great short vid.

Here on the northern California coast, our favorite crabs are Dungeness Crabs (Cancer Magister). We boil them in filtered seawater for about 15 minutes, and then they go into an ice bath like you do, but we don't salt the ice bath.

Can certainly see why they are called Spanners....what a wild looking crab! Would love to try one to compare with Dungeness....I have had LOTS of Asian/European/American crabs...and so far the best are the ones I have at home in Oregon. I definitely think body meat = best meat.
@Anonym9x

What crabs do you have in Oregon? Since you have tried so many kinds of crab would you think Australian Mudcrabs taste better than Alaskan King crab or is dungeness outstanding and blue crabs are the sweetest? What about Coconut crab🤔 I wish I could try all those crabs at the same time

These crabs are fascinating to see. I have never seen them before. What a great way to catch them. How are they dispatched? They look very different from spider crabs I've seen.
@tho464

They are dispatched by being dropped into boiling water thus killing them from the inside by boiling their lungs. 😂😂

Usually, some crabbers toss the crabs into ice-water bath...about 10# ice +7 gallons water
What's minimum landing size for spanners? Here, in Hawaii, minimum landing size is 4in/10cm. Spanners are known as Kona crabs & can be found in waters >15-20ft or more. Crabs are ono(delicious) when cooked but, personally...i prefer them cut into quarters & marinated in Korean kim-chee/gochujang sauce...WINNAH!...A-L-O-H-A from Hawaii
Like a cross between a lobster and a crab
¡Que delicia! Extraordinario. 👍

@@gerrymcdonnell6006how about the muß crabs in Australia?
I'm from Queensland
Lovely clean surfaces I see ther fellas.. old..Sally..minella.. eat your heart out.. and as a cray fisherman off the bottom of South Australia I fully disagree with the cold shock plunge... at the end of cooking.. the best way is to slightly undercooked the crustacean so that it finishes cooking slightly during the cooling process.. they should be hung by the tail and let drip-dry/ cool.. either in fridge or just outside next to cooking area away from flies

You should take the shell off and clean the guts out before you cook them that way the saltwater gets throughout the meat and the meat stays clean oh and get your air compressor out for the claws and legs and something to catch the meat when it comes flying out
