Catching Native Prehistoric Fish that’ve been around since the dinosaurs! Trash fish?!?

Bowfin are some of my FAVORITE fish to chase. Around since the dinosaurs and adaptive enough to survive all the way up to current day, I’ve always been amused with this species and knowing more about them.
They are part of a group of fish known as Lungfish, meaning they have the ability to breath air and can often be seen breaking waters surface for air, in low oxygenated waters.
Commonly confused with the invasive snakehead, these are actually native fish and should be released, if not being harvested.
Shoot me a comment if you’re interested in learning more about these fish or connect with me on Instagram @catch.716 for more content like this.
Thanks for watching!

Yes! Snake heads are invasive in south FL waters yet anglers will mistake bowfins and kill them thinking they're snake heads.

@@matthewminnis9428and now in Florida, you’re actually allowed to release the snakeheads (some of my favorite freshwater fish to chase) as long as it’s in the same place you caught them out of 🙏

I caught a nice one while catfishing with my Dad and brother when we were little. Dad called it a dogfish. I dont remember much about it, but i do remember the small teeth. Couldn't lip it like a bass. I had to use a stick in its gills to pose for a pic

Yep, you can hold them by the gill plate, use grippers or just use your hand and support the bottom, but they have insane grip strength too, so definitely wouldn’t recommend lipping it with your hand 😅

Considered trash fish because they're no good for eating. I've caught some huge bowfin . I kept one and tried to filet it. Its flesh was like paste. It also tastes HORRIBLE. I've tried ot on 2 separate occasions. It's just horrible to eat andhard to cook.

Yeah landshark did a catch and cook video on a clown knife fish and I feel like bowfin meat would be very similar, just too soft and pasty, you almost have to make a fish cake out of it I also don’t fall under the belief that something has to be good table fare to not be a trash fish, bc I’m a big catch and release guy most of the time, anyways
