Catching Blue Crabs at Night | Living Off The Land and Sea #2

Season: Summer
Ingredient: Blue Crabs
Recipe: Steamed Crabs
Though firmly situated in "lobster country," Cape Cod is the northernmost range of the blue crab. Being easily accessible, and totally delicious, blue crabs are one of OTW Cooking Columnist Andy Nabreski's favorite summertime targets.
In this episode of Living Off The Land and Sea, Andy heads out after dark to gather enough blue crabs for a summer afternoon feast.
When crabbing at night, Andy leaves the traps and bait at home, and instead uses a spotlight and a dip net to catch these tasty crustaceans.
Afterwards, Andy shows how to clean, cook, and pick the blue crabs in order to get the most meat out of these delicious crabs.
To read more about nighttime crabbing, check out this story from On The Water Magazine: www.onthewater.com/blue-crabs...

You need to buy a wire net we use in Maryland, so much easier for crab removal. The nets are made of stiff Stainless steel wire and the crab does not get tangles in it. When we trotline we can have two crabs in them then dump them out in the basket easily. Look up millers Island crab pot supply online for what I am talking about or some other MD crab supply place for one. No serious crabber uses a nylon net here. Also a true crab lover here never ever cleans the crab before steaming. Many of us eat the center part of the crab and we think the mustard is the best part, call it natures butter. Also we put seasoning on top of the crabs before steaming and do not wash off the crab in water after steaming. Just the differences we do, we love getting messy when we eat crabs. Wish our water was as clear as yours.

Great video! One suggestion, put your light onto a hang from your neck lanyard, so that when you need to drop it, it won't fall into the water and you can grab it again quickly when you need to. Those crabs you got are great! Continued success! One further question, would you recommend a metal chicken wire net over a soft net as the crab won't get entangled but since the metal offers solid footing for the crab, an easier chance for them to escape? And a final thought; for picking through the more intricate sections of the crab body, one might consider using a dental pick as it's solid, thin, and stainless steel, easy to get in and out of those tiny little meat filled chambers. Get the one that is curved like a hook so that it latches onto the crab meat for easy pull out.

There is a lot of worth while stuff in those shells. Inside the corners of those shell you pop off is the beginning of the crabs next shell when it moist. Also all the yellow butter you are washing off is so favorable it incredible you are washing it off with a water hose. Steam your crab whole. Take that yellow butter and spread it over garlic toast points. You'll learn a whole new appreciation for crab.

From New Orleans, Maryland crabs are fantastic quality. I love them. Slightly thicker shells. The way they are served cooked in Old Bay with butter as the "exotic" contribution is an injustice to the crustacean. When I paid $75+ for a half dozen #1 to then be given a bib and a hammer like I was eating a lobster... I simply sighed to avoid crying. Crabs in NOLA are a communal experience to be shared. Everything from spending hours drinking/picking meat (which we do not skip a single piece) and talking/storytelling... I'm not sure how to describe it entirely but there is something 'essential' missing from my Chesapeake Bay Area crab experiences where I was "wine and dined" in booths that isolate everyone like I'm at a steak restaurant These are crabs. Not Lobster or steak. PS Having worked at a seafood processing company during my teens. This guy would have been fired by noon on his first day. Everything you chop from crabs to squid better be transparent before you say its "its not worth it"

He had a smirk on his face and turned the male crab on his back and said "All the males looks like they have a ding-dong in the middle." and then we laughed about it. Then he showed the females didn't have that and that they had ridges in their back. Never forgot how to tell the difference with blue crabs after that.

There are numerous rules broken here but different parts of the country have developed bad habits for "steaming" crabs. The most important rule is never ever put blue crabs in fresh water. You just spent hours catching them in seasoned salt water and you ruin the crab by soaking them in fresh water before steaming. Then you rinse them off after steaming. Another rule broken. If you are just after crab meat, buy the canned product.

Sorry, just gotta say it. Never clean the crabs inside or out when eating steamed crabs. For other recipes where you actually suck on the shells, then yes clean it. And prying them open while they're alive is not a humane or necessary process. At that point they're limp not from the ice water but bc they're dead. Spraying cooked crabs with water to cool them down is asinine. Prying cooked crabs open and spraying them off is insane. I hope you're able to eat blue crabs to it's fullest potential one day and enjoy all the flavors they provide. You have such a magnificent abundance of them and you've come up with a very peculiar way to eat them. And your video production is fabulous!

@@tonychau1983 ? People are less likely to know bag and size limits when there are no licenses needed. In my area there are tons of less fortunate people shall we say, that don't buy licenses and keep just about every fish they catch regardless of size/ species. There is also the tourist crowd that does the same, and several foreign countries Ive fished in have the same problem. I think licenses can be an important educational tool, and the biggest reason its not more effective is because enforcement is awful in most places.

Using so much water to clean the crab before and after cooking would make them watery and bland. There’s so much flavor in the fat, liver and brains.

decent video, but you def don't know how to hold crabs. That's why it pinched you too, even though you said it was the only safe way to hold it. You have to turn your hand sideways and grab the base of the swimming legs. Don't wrap your fingers around like you're holding a cookie. Although, I appreciate the accurate sizing of the crabs, most fishermen like to exaggerate.

PLEASE DONT LISTEN TO THIS GUY....USE A WIRE NET, NOT MESH, NO TANGLE, AND YOU HOLD THE CRAB BY THE BACK FIN, NOT THE MIDDLE, THAT IS WHY HE GETS BIT. USE A HEAD LAMP, NOT A FLASH LIGHT...AND "A JIMMY" CRAB IS OVER 7 INCHES, NOT 5 IN....LAUGHABLE
