Catching and Tagging Big Bass for the Backyard Pond

Ойын-сауық

We go bass fishing on a local river in an attempt to catch to some largemouth bass and transport them to the backyard pond. It's late in the year and I want to add more bass to the pond in hopes that they will spawn in the spring. I have enough smallmouth bass, but I need more largemouth. The late fall temperatures are a challenge, as the fish have slowed down, but I fight through some northern pike in an attempt to get some bass in the boat.
We tag some surprisingly heavy bass with our pin tagging machine. The fish tagging system allows us to track and monitor our fish in the backyard pond.

Great video ! The key to big bass is bluegills .They love shiners but they hunt them down to the last one. If you put large enough bluegill in the bass can't eat them and they will spawn a couple of times a year providing a lot of forage. Those largemouths will spawn for sure .The smallmouths may not spawn in your pond unless you provide a gravel bed .

Thanks for the info, Dan. It's hard to find bluegill around here. I do have a lot of pumpkin seed sunfish but I think they only spawn once in spring. I'll add some more adults this year for sure and try and track down some bluegill. We'll see on the smallmouth, I have to add some river rock but most of the pond has some gravel under the sand. We'll see if it works.

I would have kept the pike to help get rid of them, but I understand why you didn’t want to, they do stink! I’m enjoying your videos, I have a pond myself thanks!

Thanks for watching. I hear you with the pike, but I usually throw them back. I know some people who rank them as a top eating fish.

Wow those are some healthy bass in terms of relative weights, especially #4. Better boost the spawning size bluegill or they’ll starve

Thanks. I dont have bluegill close by naturally and can't seem to buy any. I do have the pumpkinseed sunfish that are very common everywhere around here. I'm going to work on getting more of those in the spring. They do spawn well. Maybe have to remove a bass of two, I'll have to watch and see.
