Catching and Grill Frying Bluegill (the ridiculously easy way)

In one of my first videos I demonstrated an easy way to cook your catch. I called it grill-frying because it was a combination of both grilling and frying. It’s one of my favorites. Let’s try to catch some bluegill and then grill fry them. See the recipe and music credits below:
Here is the link to Big Mike's channel. / bigmike315fishing
Recipe for Grill Fried Bluegill
Ingredients:
1 1/2 pound of bluegill or other white fleshed fish fillets (crappie tend to fall apart)
1 large egg
1 can of evaporated milk
1 cup of fish breading (Eg. Zatarains, Shore Lunch, Louisiana, etc.)
1 stick (4 ounces) butter
Directions:
In a container, whisk an egg, then add evaporated milk and whisk thoroughly.
Put fish fillets in the container and submerge them in the milk.
Keep the container in refrigerator.
Add two layers of foil to grill. Make sure to allow enough air for the grill to stay lit. Lightly butter or spray the foil with cooking spray (I skipped this step but probably shouldn't have).
Heat the grill to about 375° F (190° C).
Lay the fillets down on foil and generously brush them with butter.
Close lid and cook for 4 minutes.
Open lid, flip the fillets, and generously butter the other sides.
Close lid and allow fish to cook for 4 more minutes, no longer.
The background music is titled “Bill Cheatham.” It was performed by “Shake that Little Foot string band.” It was downloaded from archive.org. There it was incorrectly labeled “Bill Cheathum.” It carries a Creative Commons license: Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike. I was able to find this about the song:
“Although this tune is of nineteenth century origin, much of its current popularity is due to its frequent performance by the late Arthur Smith, a Grand Ole Opry star of the 1930s and early 1940s.”

John I expected a cooking video, but got a very good schooling(no pun intended) in fishing. Now onto the recipe I've never seen the grill/frying method. After watching how you cooked up these larger than usual bluegill I think your methodology makes all the sense in the world, and the outcome of the recipe was an absolute success!

Hi Glen!! The fishing was easier and more fun this time out. I've made this recipe a 100 times before on the old outdoor electric grill, but that device broke. So the Weber seems to get hotter. The only thing I might change would be to dab a little butter right on the foil before placing the fillets down on it. Regardless, the fish came out buttery and delicious! Clean up was a breeze too! Ball up the foil and toss it away! Thanks so much for watching! Thanks especially for your kind critique! I really appreciate it my friend!

Hi Jeff! Good to see you again! It's hard to believe that a recipe this easy could be so delicious but it is! I think science has now disproved the old hypothesis that saturated fat from butter is harmful. Yes, I do load on the butter. Been doing it for 15 years now. I lost 28 pounds and have kept it off. awe this is so sweet. We call them lil perch in my area, and we love them. My husband and I use live bait night crawlers to get them. I get stuck in the tree often also. My hubby gets frustrated because he has to bait my line, take the fish off, get the line out the tree...etc lol. But he says, I'm the best fishing partner he's ever had. Oh I almost forgot, he has to fry them up when we get home.

Hi DTEG! Hahaha! I've heard bluegill called bream before, but never lil perch! Night crawlers never fail, but mealworms seem to work as well for me, and because they're packed in sawdust instead of soil, they don't dirty up the boat as much! 😊 Looks like you have a lifetime fishing guide! But I'll bet he considers himself to be the lucky one in this partnership! Thanks so much for watching my shows and especially for the kind words my friend!

Hi John - I do like my grill. I am coming off a much larger model with many burners, side burner, rotisserie thingie...I never used much of that stuff but my wife went along that day it was bought...and she was attracted to all the bells and whistles. We lost that grill to storm damage (and it was pretty rusted in the burners too). I still miss the old charcoal days of my plain ole Weber grill...but I admit it's easier and faster to use the gas grills...I suppose I'm not going back, haha! The littler Weber two burner is perfect for us now that we are empty nesters....I'm not cooking for a slew of our kids friends or anything like that. I have pounded a stake in the ground next to the concrete it sits on...and attached a chain to it - hopefully that will keep it tethered better in the next wind storm. (we live on the edge of Tornado Alley at the AR/OK border) Going fishing this weekend I hope - assuming the temps will stay up. Planning on using the simple 1/32 oz maribu jig set up and maybe have another pole with a Mepps Spin Fly rigged up...and THEN....I think Saturday or Sunday evening...I will be trying your Grill Frying method - it sure looks so good! :) Have a good day -john n.

Hi again, John! (I'm John also! LOL!) We're empty nesters too of course so our gas Weber is just perfect, and I don't miss messing with the charcoal too much. 😉 I think the weather out your way should be great for fishing this weekend, nice and warm, but maybe a bit windy. I think you'll like the grill-fry method! I found it on line when the internet was new, and the site and even mention of the method seem to have disappeared. I whole-hearted approve of your strategy for catching fish this weekend! Light and ultra light fishing, at least to me, is a blast! Best of luck with both your fishing and cooking my friend!
