Catches and Throws Legal or Not With Voice Over

Спорт

Volleyball rules training video on illegal hits. Often called "LIFTs" which is not the correct term. Too many are called just because the player had their hand(s) under the ball. Officials need to rule if it was a catch-and-throw to be illegal.

    Excellent video and audio on catch and throws. I especially like the slow-motion, zoom-in multiple replays. This is the best I've seen on youtube. Kudos to Gary Frieders.

    My team (during practice) keeps calling lifts whenever I hit a ball using my palm and/or fingers from below my waist, although I feel like it clearly was never gaught / thrown, but instead bounces with an audible "thud". Kinda pisses me off, since they seem to always be fine with clearly thrown balls during attack hits. I also don't see how they could ever judge my hits as a lift when the setter always makes much more prolonged contact with the ball, often (in my opinion) obviously throwing it rather than hitting it.

    The "common thought" is under hand contact can't be legal. Rather, as shown and seen in many videos, the ball actually rebounded off the hand/palm and the follow through looks as though it was "lifted". Avoid the follow through by just popping it up.

    All plays in this video are legal, and should not be called.

    I was hoping to see the 3rd hit being pushed/thrown over and how thats called/not called for 6 vs 6. Its not rebounding off the hand but a more controlled throw or push in a general direction.

    Louis Wouters finger roll is allowed for indoor volleyball. Catch and throw is not. The video is correct.

    Nah, she pushed off the side of the ball causing that spin, no different than a cut shot or roll shot by a hitter. The double by the libero should have been called instantly though.

    The most common complaint I hear is: "I wish all you refs would call everything the same". The rules committees need to make the rules MORE RESTRICTIVE, and give guidance in the rules book. The "grey areas" are so large now that volleyball is going the way of the NBA (i.e. you don't need to have any skill to play the game). I have seen some of the sloppiest volleyball play at the college level. I have seen BLATANT (non called) throws of the volleyball when the offensive team has an over pass and the defensive team gets a "directional block". I have seen attackers contact the volleyball with their ENTIRE hand (with the arm fully extended) and slam the ball down on the opposing team and there is no call !

    Seriously just stop tolerating dumps. When setters choose to change the direction the ball and dump it over the net with both hands with prolonged contact, just call it catching-throwing. Stop glorifying these unskilled and simply illegal plays.

    I completely agree, even ones I see folks claim are legal. The whole dump concept makes the game look ugly and why I found myself not appreciating indoors any more.

    NO. 5 is DEFINATELY a lift ..... it didn't rebound (cleanly) off the cheek of her palm, it came off of her WHOLE HAND !!! Teach your refs better than this ! This is one of the problems with the current group of refs ..... quit making excuses for poor play !!!

  • @garyncoa

    @garyncoa

    "Dig" is a slang term used in volleyball for when a player dives and reach out to hit the ball back up in the air. You won't find anything either on "pushing". The rule books use "catch and throw" or "prolong contact" in regards to whether contact with the ball was legal or not. A ball over controlled is a catch, clear stoppage and held on too long, prior to release. Item to look for in regards to illegal - contact with ball then turn of wrist prior to release. As stated in the video - just because the hand was under the ball doesn't mean it was illegal. To the naked eye it might look like is was carried. But many videos are showing such is not the case. There is separation between the hand and ball as the player follows through with their action.
