Please don’t call sandabs mini halibut because people will mistake an actual baby halibut as a sandab and take it home which is illegal and hurts the halibut population 😨

It's 10 times more interesting to see, how you get the ingridients yourself instead of buying them. It's the whole process I love.

I think they have them in Hawaii because I used to walk around where a river came out to the ocean in Punalu'u on the windward side of Oahu and it was pretty common (and funny!) to feel one of those slip out from under my foot.

Well, Sanddab are used for live bait when Ling Cod fishing and we try to bring up as many as we can on the Subiki rig to fill the bait well. this time of year the Dabs are often the target fish when on the combo trips. Dabs first then go pull the crab pots. Dabs are a fantastic eating fish and offered at a lot of high-end restaurants. They are better when battered and broiled but frying is quicker and easier. Anyway, an excellent table fish. So easy to catch so I never go out on the Dab and crab combo trips.

I love that fresh sauce you made but the only other thing I think I would add is a clove or two of fresh finely minced garlic. I'm sure your garnish is great by itself but fresh garlic has always added that little bit of extra pungent flavor for me. Thanks for sharing and while I don't have access to fresh sand dabs, which looks absolutely amazing, I'll try your fresh garnish on other kinds of fried fish very soon.

"Knife is Life" There was a local Japanese grocery store (Mitsuwa Marketplace) that was relocating and they were having a closing sale with everything 25% off. I remember they had a few knives made in Japan on sale. They were from $60-$120 +25% off. Looking at your video makes me regret not buying a few of them while they were on sale. with that being said, my all time favorite knife has to be my Nakiri, hands down. that was a smart set up. dope!!

That sauce looks good. One of my favorite fish to eat. Catching them is more like work than fishing. There are so deep, usually about 300 plus feet, and you use such a heavy weight, 1 to 2 pounds, you don't reel in just one or two at a time. I usually use 10 to 12 hooks, little strips of squid for bait, and I usually have 2 gangions set up. Send one to the bottom, wait a few minutes, 5 to 10 at the most, and reel them in. You lay them out on the deck, unsnap them from the swivel, snap on the other already baited up gangion, and send that one to the bottom and set it up. You then unhook your fish, put them in a bucket, put squid strips on the hooks and lay that out. Then its time to reel in your fish, and repeat the process. The least I have ever caught in one day is 105 the most 268. Fast and easy to clean, sweeter than halibut, and if you like to catch fish to eat, one of the best deals in sportfishing. You can fry them, use just about any sole recipe, or even deep fry them until they are crisp and eat them like big chips, bones and all. Yummy. I need to go fishing.....

No Daily limit on sandabs. I use to fish for them off Stillwater cove after rockfishing. The easiest way to clean them is to use scissors. Fry them until the bone is crispy and eat them whole. They reside deep and on sandy 120 FOW.
