"Catastrophic": Iraqi Writers Sinan Antoon & Feurat Alani Reflect on U.S. Invasion 20 Years Later

At around 5:30 a.m. local time in Baghdad on March 20, 2003, air raid sirens were heard in Baghdad as the U.S. invasion began. Within the hour, President George W. Bush gave a nationally televised speech from the Oval Office announcing the war had begun. The attack came on the false pretext that Iraqi President Saddam Hussein was hiding weapons of mass destruction, and despite worldwide protest and a lack of authorization from the United Nations Security Council. We spend today's show with two Iraqis looking back at how the unprovoked U.S. invasion devastated Iraq and helped destabilize much of the Middle East. Feurat Alani is a French Iraqi writer and documentarian who was based in Baghdad from 2003 to 2008. His recent piece for The Washington Post is headlined "The Iraq War helped destroy what it meant to be an Iraqi." Sinan Antoon was born and raised in Baghdad. He is also a writer, as well as a poet, translator and associate professor at New York University. His latest piece appears in The Guardian, headlined "A million lives later, I cannot forgive what American terrorism did to my country, Iraq."

Why KZread removed it until backlash, and why when I search it on KZread, instead Winter on Fire (Na zi version) is coming up on top? Is KZread trying to deflect from truth? How is it fair?

The sadness comes for me, from being a very young woman in the Military during the first Iraq war, when I look back now and realize how I didn’t even know what a Muslim was, what Middle Eastern culture was, or their traditions. I blindly followed my government who taught me to hate. Many years later, I live in the Middle East now, I am a Muslim and married to an Arab man with a son. I have seen both sides, and I know everything we were told was a lie. I came to the Middle East to see for myself, and that journey began with the original thought I had, how can I hate a people or religion I know absolutely nothing about. My heart will always be broken, but the life I have now is so full of love, family, rich traditions, and deep faith. However, I see my country dishing out the same hate for another war, Russia, China, Ukraine. I will never trust my Government!!! And I will never live in America again.

Disease killed most native Americans, would have happened regardless as world populations grew. As I know it; over 500 tribes have agreements with the USA government. Hunter gatherers being a nomadic primitive way of life would not have lasted. Private property rights, advanced financing, modern weapons, etc. assured their defeat in the USA wars with the tribal nations. I mean before the Europeans, tribes still fought tribes and people existed before natives I sure and lost their wars. Stories of red-headed giants in North America destroyed by native tribes, Clovis/pre-clovis peoples are gone. I know many tribes rich beyond belief to most Americans and autonomous governing. Europeans could have taken everything but didn't. Much collective guilt exists today in the USA.

No mention of the war being about a Haifa Israel pipeline or about sending Israel Iraqi oil or about the Plan For Greater Israel and taking out a half dozen Arab countries on its behalf. Recall infamous Glencore Oil mogul, notorious traitor ,Marc Rich, pardoned by Bill Clinton, was part of a pro-Israel network that worked to get Iraq’s oil to Israel. Oil insider Gary Vogler writes of the Iraq war: “The oil agenda I discovered and experienced was to supply Iraq oil to Israel.” The players were the neocons in the Bush Administration… Paul Wolfowitz, Douglas Feith, Lewis Libby, Marc Zell, David Friedman, curveball scoundrel Chalabi, The other reason for the invasion included installing largest U$ militarized embassy in the world in Iraq. Once Iraq was taken down, then Libya, Syria, Yemen, Ukraine and areas around Somalia Eritrea and Lebanon were decimated. Recall that Syria refused pipeline plans promoted by the U$ coalition. The agenda called for the reopening of the old Kirkuk to Haifa pipeline and its significant expansion. Thus another reason to punish Syria, even though it was helping that coalition after 2001! And once again UKs BP strikes the Gulf again. Yet revisionist exclusionary history experts at Demagoguery Now spin this anniversary report to push a one sided disinfo agenda that makes it allies look better and it's enemies worse and further divide and confuse it's audience, especially in the US.

Very needed coverage that we tend to sweep into forgetfulness ! Our history of violence as a nation is unfortunately a pattern of Western colonialistic mentality! To some US-Americans non-whites are “Indian Country “ residents! I noticed this peculiarity when I first entered New York City in 1957! Europeans became American! Indigenous communities and non-Europeans were inconvenient realities! The trend is morphing as an inconvenient truth that still divides the US along lines of a cancerous and pervasive racism!
