    With regards to the tenebrosum where now u have that brand new growth. Do u stop watering now until that growth meets watering criteria?

    Good question! I have a new set of roots on the growth that died, so I'm technically all set for keeping the plant alive and healthy. Therefore, any additional roots will be bonus, so the roots on the new nubbin aren't as important as a typical flush of roots. Therefore, I'll likely keep watering as normal throughout the growing season. When the nubbin starts putting out roots, the temps here will be well past 100F, so drying the plant out would likely cause rapid desiccation and more harm than good. So I anticipate that the roots on the new nubbin won't be as robust as if I'd held off watering until the new roots were 4" long.

    I am interested in growing catasedum this time after watching your video, it amazed me the way the psuedobulb grows so big. I have cymbidium for 30 years already. I will start looking where to buy this catasetum.

    I have the same yellow spotting as your chuck taylor on my new growths on Cycnoches, and a couple Catasetum . . . I thought it was cold damage or disease, until I found thrips yesterday, Would you classify that as thrip damage? Thanks!

    No, I don’t believe it’s thrips. I’ve seen it over the years and haven’t really thought much about those spots until this year when other folks started posting pics on social media and asking questions. I think the spots show up where happy sap occurs and the sun shines down on the leaf, causing the spots. I’ll poke around and see what pops up. Sorry for the incomplete answer! Either way, it’s not something I’ve found to hurt the plants.

    Hi Stephen another good video thanks for all your effort to share your knowledge 🙏🙏🙏 I hope you don’t miss understand me but I would like to share an idea. In all videos all orchid growers are saying don’t give water till roots come this size etc. but there is no video if you didn’t know and if you manage to lost all roots in new grow or if you break the new grow if you already watered early what you can do to rescue catasetum. It’s could help many people 🙏including me. Because I manage to break new roots in my catasetum new grow and new grow almost about 15 cm and trying to push out new roots but it’s too slow and weather is start getting soo hot here also bulbs are already get much thinner . I don’t know what to do and while I try to research I found many people have same or similar issues and no one make rescue videos. Should I do mini greenhouse from bottles etc should I put somewhere a little bit shade. Could be really popular videos if you share you can share your thoughts 🙏🙏🙏

    Ah, good to know! Breaking the new roots can be tough and often leads to the death of the plant. However, getting the plant into cooler conditions (like a window inside an air conditioned house) can help. The plant should also put out another flush of roots, which can be helpful!

    awesome video! I talked to you a few weeks ago and you gave me some great advice and I was hoping to ask you one more question. To refresh I received my first catasetum about a month ago and when it was shipped it came un-potted during transit so I was forced to re-pot it. shortly after the leaves began to turn yellow from the bottom up and now it has lost all its leaves (so I dont know if it lost its leaves because it went dormant or if it lost them from shock). So I say all that to ask - it being the August is this not too early for it to go dormant and since it has no leaves now do I not water it at all until it breaks dormancy and gets a good root system on it? thanks for any advice.

  • @SVKLOrchids

    @SVKLOrchids

    I would keep watering occasionally (1-2x per week) to see if it will throw a new growth. I think the shock may have sent it into dormancy, but maybe you can coax it back out of dormancy.

    I am a new subscriber and also a newer orchid lover. Once the bug bites you you are hooked. I currently have 59 orchids. My question is that after watching a couple of your videos and also the chat with Mr Clarke I am a bit confused. I live in SWFL where it’s always hot and sunny. Should I also let my orchids go into dormancy? Sometimes my plants become so dry I can’t imagine not watering but also I feel like I’m “mothering” and overwatering because some of my orchids are suffering and leaves are turning brown and pseudo bulbs turning brown and mushy. Please help.

  • @SVKLOrchids

    @SVKLOrchids

    Жыл бұрын

    Yes, definitely let them go totally dry in fall/winter even in SWFL. The Cataseinae are from places that have a similar climate you experience (hot/humid) but with winters that never receive cold fronts! Generally, orchids thrive on "benign neglect" and this is especially true for Catasetums!

    I have a big, healthy Clowesia dodsoniana that has yet to put out even a hint of a new growth this summer, whereas this time of year it should be putting out an advanced growth and nearing flowering. It did undergo a weird summer in 2021 where it didn't get any water from me for weeks (absolutely no effect on the fattening bulbs), and in January it was still so fully leafed out that it got spider mites, and I had to put it in a dark corner to force it into dormancy. Has anyone ever documented Catasetinae staying dormant for an entire growing season?

    Hi Stephen, great video. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I have a question. I bought a Catasetum 'Ten Dragons' three weeks ago. The plant still has leaves and has not received any water as we are entering winter here in the Southern Hemisphere. To my surprise I noticed a developing flower spike...should I let it bloom without water or should I water it during blooming? any advice much welcome. Cheers!
