Catasetum Orchid Spring Maintenance - Dormancy, New Growth, Repots, Etc.

In today's episode, I'll share how my catasetum orchid collection is doing. Did some make it through the winter dormancy? When to water new growths? Is it time to repot? These are some of the questions I'll answer in today's video!

Fred shows that keeping the dormant plants above (but not in) a glass of water can help keep humidity high around the roots, which might help keep the bulbs hydrated. You can also water during dormancy to keep the bulbs fat so that you can keep them dry as the new roots grow. Just keep temps above 55 if you water during dormancy.

I will have to try it next winter…I didn’t have a chance to check on them this winter, so they definitely suffered more than usual. Hoping this season will be better! 😁

Thanks for the video. I’m looking forward to seeing any updates and blooms you get! Mine are all growing pretty well so far. I’m watering about half of the group now and waiting on longer roots on the rest. 😊

Sounds great! Some catasetums come out of dormancy at different times, totally normal. 😁

Great info…thanks! I potted my 5 cats and 1 Monneira in the PET method like you’ve shown in past videos. Good to know I don’t necessarily have to repot every year. Nice! 👍🏻

Glad it helped you! Annual repots are really not necessary unless there’s a lot of dead material to remove or the media is really broken down. Makes life easier too so it’s less work to do 😁

Only a couple of my catasetums are coming out of dormancy now and the rest are still sleeping. Increasing the overall humidity is supposed to help with the shrivelling over the winter break, but it's probably pretty difficult to get it as high as Fred's in his hot house!

Haha yea, winter humidity is always tough for me…but hopefully if this season goes well, they’ll hold up better over the winter season. We have a pretty cool spring, so I think they’re a little slow at waking up too 😁

Thank you for your video! How`s your humidity? My catasetums never shrivle that hard and till now non of them (non of the healthy ones) died during dormancy. Looking forward for more catasetum content

My humidity usually ranges between 40-60% so it’s not a problem. But during the winter months in the garage, it can get as low as 5% during Santa Ana weather events and I think that’s why they suffered.
