Today I'm going to analyze an online Settlers of Catan Cash tournament match. Since there is money on the line, everyone takes these matches very seriously. This is my 3rd round in the online Catan Cash tournament where I play against a top 100 Catan player using the balanced strategy.
In this video, I provide 3 winning Settlers of Catan tips that you'll learn about.
Tip #1 is especially essential to do when there are multiple players buying development cards. It will be very difficult to win if you can't secure a win condition (largest army or longest road).
Tip #2 is something I say all the time. It's the difference between good and great players. It's the difference between winning and losing. If you want to be winning in Catan championships, then you must do this.
Tip #3 is more applicable to online Catan tournaments where you have a certain amount of time. In general, using this tip will save you a lot of time. Tip #3 also goes hand in hand with Tip #2, so make sure to use it together!

    I'm glad you finally started pursuing a more serious career on KZread! I think you have a lot of potential. Didn't the teaching job work out after all? Furthermore: I really liked this video, you were critical, it was fast, and very clear. Sometimes it was a bit messy because you made some mistakes and added quite a lot of comments, but overall it was still easy to follow. I also like your viewer interaction with the suggested pauses and let the viewers decide. Now I have one suggestion (after viewing all of your videos at least once) which I think is missing or relatively absent, namely analyzing from a losing perspective. I think it might be interesting to show how you lost games rather than won them. Was it because of placement/trades/table talk/knights/unfortunate dice rolls/etc. Maybe analyzing the semi finals you shortly spoke about in the end of this video might be a good one ;). Continue what you're doing DylLighted, you're doing great!

    Great commentary DyL! Thanks for your videos, they are always fun to watch. That ending was so epic, I guess your opponents did not expect you to be able to win at all. You are so good, but still have a lot to learn I see. I'm not really good at catan, but I'm pretty good at speed chess. So here are two more tips to add to your list, based on my experience of speed play: 1) think ahead. It is not always possible with incomplete information, but it can save precious time and decrease frustration. 2) attack people's clock. Play the game in such a way that your opponents have to think more, and thus are more likely to make suboptimal moves. This might involve fake trades and talk in chat - whatever is at your disposal. I'm not sure, but maybe that slow trade with black was intentional on their part?

  • @DyLightedCatan

    @DyLightedCatan

    3 жыл бұрын

    Love it! I didn’t think about making harder decisions for opponents to run their clock. The stalling with trades is a common and annoying tactic. Totally agree with planning ahead! Something that I recommend to attack opponents’ clock is that when placing settlements and you have an easy decision, place it down now! Your opponents are thinking on your turn, and if you can make them place on suboptimal spots due to time that’s great!

    @@DyLightedCatan I dont know how long it takes for you to make that script, but 14 pages for 30minutes sounds rough. Like maybe 8 hours or so I would guess. I dont want to judge. Did you ever thought of watching the rec like a couple of times and make notes? If you are a good talker and I think you are you can handle 30 minutes with notes (I understand the first 5 to 10 minutes of the game are very important so maybe put more focus there) and at serious events maybe just pause the game and talk at about that specific point. Just some ideas. I do appreciate all your time in editing, animations and so on and over time you'll sure get faster with that. I really laughed after that rewind thing.

    Great video! I'm just curious at 8:54 and 11:07 why you are trying so hard in your trades to get 2 ore? Are you trying to build 2 dev cards, or are you going to risk holding out for a city, even though you would end your turns at 9 cards? I think someone might have accepted a 1:1 sheep or wheat for ore in the 8:54 turn, which let's you build a dev card and gets you to 6 cards. If I were in this game and someone with a lot of wheat was asking for 2 ore, I would assume they're building a city that turn and would never trade. Curious to hear your thoughts!

    Hey Ashwin! Glad to see you here. I mentioned this before, but selling the wood and bricks early in the game is important as the road player. As the game progresses, wood and brick only lose value (generally). Here I am trying to do a "value trade." If I can take away ore from my opponents and gain it for myself, that's strong value in general. I would probably buy dev cards if those trades when through. Holding at 9 cards is too risky.

    Bro! so many lessons in such a relatively short video. A question tho. How angry or just emotional do you really get when, say, your number is blocked and it keeps rolling (like the 4 wheat in this video)? Do you really keep your cool during game?

  • @iamgenghiskhan
    @iamgenghiskhan3 жыл бұрын

    Great video. I especially like the tip about trading away brick for ore in the early game when you are a road player, to try to get an early city. Dylighted: I wonder if you have any other tips for winning as the road player? Especially when playing against less experienced players. I feel like whenever I play the road strategy, I get robbed way more than when I play OWS. I could be on 5 pts and the OWS player has 4 pts and 3 dev cards but I will still be the one targeted. Of course because of this I try to play OWS when possible. But on some boards there are just 1-2 good ore spots that get taken by the first 2 players, and then there is no option but to play the (ultimately doomed) longest road strategy.

  • @DyLightedCatan

    @DyLightedCatan

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for asking, if you haven't, watch my other videos where I go over how to play longest road. A huge mistake I see a lot of road players make is splitting their road network when they are too far apart to connect. It's essential to commit your roads to mainly a single side unless you can connect.

  • @iamgenghiskhan

    @iamgenghiskhan

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@DyLightedCatan Thanks for the tip, that makes a lot of sense. I also watched your video from March about playing longest road and that was really helpful. One thing that I should practice more is how to manage the table talk more effectively so that the robber is not always just targeted at me (because of being the road player). When playing OWS it is easier to just lay low and avoid the robber that way, but maybe a road player has to be more active in pointing out how the OWS player is the hidden threat (despite being behind on the point count).

    I also think building a city first to 5910 is more valuable, cuz ore is more important for you and you are going to double up your wheat production by building to 3:1 and if you are building a city on 8411 you are too vulnerable to robber on 4 wheat. Also, as you mentioned in the video, black doesn't need to protect his 4 wheat which is shared with you. Smart play by black. Yeah evening up brick/wood ratio is good, but building 2nd city is more important here on key 11-point spot IMO. Thanks for posting videos, keep it up please. Very informative to watch.

    This just hit my feed, wow didn't know this was still going so strong. Haven't really played much catan since SM has put out such strong games. I found the game very dependent on the first 2-3 rolls hitting big or RIP. Played more sea catan than anything as it was a little more balanced, but where the dice wouldn't hit you were dealing with disinterested players for 90 min. Seems like gaming has moved on to light weight 45 min session games, your thoughts?
