So smart to spend as much time as you are on the toilet placement (and all the other details). You'll be glad you did when you're all done. Still so impressed how you both (Matt in this toilet discussion) are able to explain your thinking and articulate the trade-offs that are considered and the reasoning behind the final decisions you make. I don't know that I would have the patience or even the ability to explain it so succinctly when there are so many things to talk about. Eventually I would reach a point of "let's just build the darn boat." But we really really appreciate that you do take the time to "talk it out" in front of us. Nice to continue to look at other boats and their details and setups to have in your mind for this (or future) builds. So many nice things that don't translate necessarily into your build but are nice to consider. It's good to see you continuing to build your mental database of options. Looking forward to see "your" boat next week.

We were so happy to be able to tour the Vision for ideas. As you mentioned, not all layout ideas will transfer, but even being able to see design aspects of it (veneer colors, vinyls, countertops) are things we'll need to make decisions on soon.

It's great the way we can see the steps you are taking in the interior design with the build.

After years of using it now, I don't think I'll ever be able to get rid of that outro song and change it to something else. 😍

It has to be easier for planning using the actual fixtures than it was/is using the cardboard cutouts. While I use cardboard cutouts for space planning all the time, I also appreciate it more when I get the actual component to plan with. Just an observation (this is a joke) your bathroom area is really dirty right now... LOL. It's fun to watch areas like that take shape with the walls, floors and cabinet planning and hearing your thought process along the way makes it easier to understand why you make the decisions that you make for your lifestyles. Seeing the Vision 44 also makes it clear to us non-boaters how much nicer spaces look like when they are finished to include inside cabinets, closets etc. They do look more finished and probably feel better over the long haul to the owners.

Hi Matt, Hi Jessica, on the head, since you're going to the level of making an elevating base in your plans, why not make the head slightly mobile so that it pivots around one of the back corners ? In that fashion the head can be nearly parallel to hull for minimum intrusion into walkway area, but able to pivot 30-45 degrees outward for usage ? All the lines are flexible already, so why not take advantage of that capability ? The angle cut counter space back near head could also be built to match sink's full depth and projecting over the head for majority of time and be hinged to pivot upward and back for toilet access when necessary.

These fiber bands that are in packaging for your toilet etc, are easy to remove by taking the loose end and pulling it towards the gluing, then it will come loose .. You do not need a knife :) Friendly tip :)

The Vision is almost exactly what I want in a catamaran. I love almost everything about it! I don't think any other currently build catamaran comes nearly as close to ideal for me, and knowing how open they are to working with the buyer to make alterations and changes is just such a great thing! Really looking forward to seeing the tour next week! The Max Cruise has definitely been an interesting one to watch ever since I first discovered it when you guys first talked about it.

The planning and thought you guys have put into your boat are going to pay huge dividends when you start living and sailing around the world. You guys clean up pretty darn good. God bless you both and keep you safe.

Don't over think, being a builder myself I try to tell my customers to plan from the finish product bewards. Most times the last thing to install or put up would be the window dressings, location types and storage. The type of things divided as what you would use every day * Tools , weather gear , first aid, food , and documents. Wishing you the best of life's journey, Die with memories not dreams.. ~ carry-on

Loving the raised platform for the head. Having fitted and serviced many a ships head, I find that that the raised platform is a great thing as you can then cut an access cover to gain access underneath. This then allows you to bolt the toilet down and not just screw to a board making it so much stronger. It also gives you more options for running the pipes straight down. You also benefit from being able to whip the head out for servicing and repair. Loving the thought process. Can’t wait to see the finished cat. She has a lot in common with the new Nautitech open 44 which has just been launched. Have a look, some great ideas and design has gone into it. A proper sailors cat.

I love the concept of the Vision 444, I actually thought you all might get one. I particularly love the ease of handling and the IN-BOOM furler system, it provides an infinite number of reef points and is so easy to operate from the helm with no crew assistance. It can be operated without a need to point into the wind, which again makes reefing so much easier and almost INSTANT in an emergency blow from a surprise squall. Its a VERY simple design and includes all the necessary things needed for two person world cruising.

Nothing like designing a room around a toilet!! LOL!

I think a well thought out plan will be worth the inconvenience of it all in the long run. Cheers.

Someday, it may be bigger people using the toilet, so make sure the boat is appealing. The Vision looks like a well thought out boat, the great advantage of the Max Cruise is the sailing performance of the narrower hulls and the reduced weight.

In the guest hull there will be more room for the toilet, so guests should be ok. 😊. And the hope is to eventually sell it to someone French or German, who is used to sacrificing space for performance.

don't forget at some time you will most likely need to replace or adjust toilet seat and you will need to be able to undo those seat bolts so make sure you can get access

With time available it is wise to really plan and design exactly what you desire!

notch out under the vanity on the toilet side so you can spread remember some people are left handed. Think about adding a sprayer use instead of toilet paper. could you flip the toilet and the vanity location and go with a shower curtain. You could slide the shower curtain out of the way for more space. Medicine cabinets are great vs drawers. a floating vanity top were you could hang a towel bar rod under the top .

I am at the same stage of figuring out toilet placement...on one hand it doesn't seem like a big deal, however if you get it wrong you'll be kicking yourself for as long as you own the boat, so bravo for taking the time!

At least we know the guest head will be much easier because they've taken a mold with a specific toilet placement which we'll need to follow. 😀

*Sliding bars* for the sugar scoops are very cool , but you could still use _folding_ bars and get the same kind of security on passage without getting in the way of your dinghy access. They could be vertically stowed at anchor.

You are going to have guests. I am 270 lbs. looks like a really tight fit. But love you considered reaching around. Sail Life head has no room to reach around. Lol

Something that came to mind was could not the toilet be placed on a base that either slides or turns like a turntable? A 6 inch turn might give you much more room.

The height adjusting clamping knobs/screws for the table in some of the images sure looked like shin skinners to me. Or are those foot rests? Re toilet: If you raised it up to chest height then you could set it back out of the hallway. Of course a ladder and seat belt would then be required. Do you look at your boat and the finished boat and say "My goodness there's a lot of fiddly work left to be done."

Still lots and lots of work to be done!!! As you can see, much more work goes into planning and preparation than execution, so hopefully the further we get along the faster some of things projects will go. 🙂

Just a thought, What about moving the head next to the shower and then the cabinets from the head to the entrance door bulkhead?

While I can appreciate the effort into positioning the toilet I have to wonder why its not at the end of the space away from the door. That should negate any clearance problems from trying to walk around it. Looking forward to the plumbing and wiring installations since I have been wondering why some of that work has been left until after some spaces have been closed in.

yes, should be looking at the clearance for the plumbing also, when it plugs up, there will be no room to get the hoses off, unless you unbolt the seat, what fun that will be

I’m sure you considered this but as you know that joker valve requires constant maintenance/replacement. You must allow for easy access so the job isn’t worse then it already is.

*FYI* to ANYBODY who needs to remove the heat sealed plastic strapping on a box... The connection of the two ends of the strap is longer on the underside so you only have to reach UNDER the strap joint and grab the inside end and pull! It may leave a couple of fibers still attached but you will usually not need any tool, blade or scissors. You're welcome!!!

I echo the sentiment here, tons of thought and effort going into the placement- shame not enough room to just make its own standalone room for toilet. I for one can’t wait to see the finished photos next week. I am not the artistic type so visualizations don’t work for me- just give me something physical- plans or even be headset and I’ll do fine! Temperatures are finally planning on warming up and we're so excited not to have to worry about below freezing temperatures much more (we really hope). 🙂 And after this episode, I think a lot of people are going to be very surprised next week to find out that Max Cruised also moved their master toilet to the same position we are placing ours in, as well as putting it on a 45 degree angle to allow for more walking space through the area. 😮

As a crossover event, Maybe you could get the White oak from Acorn to Arabella. I believe he has some excess oak he may be able to use for a veneer for your cabinets. Might help both sites with subscribers. A winter visit would work for both. Would love to see my two favorite boats work together.

I used to hate on unfinished areas on million dollar boats. But it'll be interesting to see how you value it when the cost is your actual labor. Balance in particular love to brag about the 6000 hours or whatever their boats are. I've always assumed if I were to DIY I would value 1/3 fewer hours more than I would having locker headliners look like porcelain. I literally think you could spend a year on finish alone. Which of course is worth it on a labor of love, but it's also a year of full time drudgery rather than fun. I think a banker saving an extra 2 month's salary to pay a year's salary for an African laborer is a no brainer. But you're the laborers and not bankers so I'm staying tuned.

Awesome look at a sister boat. Perhaps a telescopic ridged barrier across the rear openings instead of a simple strap. Mimic the great idea you showed us but adapted to your boat.

I am always thinking of servicing the toilet. Easy access to the back of the toilet because you know you are going to be back there. The vanity can be modified. Just spend a couple a days thinking about it. Like you said it is easier thinking about it than redoing it or being unhappy with the result. I am more of a toilet person than a vanity person but that is not true for every one.

Mount the dang toilet 3 ft up. Add a small ladder. Will make for great Lub Tub footage.

you would go through the same if you were building a bathroom, doing fits to make sure you don't smash your elbows of reviewing toilet paper holder placement ....what is becoming more popular are bidet attachments from free hand hoses to permanent sprayers. Great systems for boats cause there is little or no paper involver in the holding tanks

Maybe you could mount it such that it rotates when you open the lid - both issues solved if you can.

With the plastic wrap on your toilet, if you find where the plastic joins back onto itself, you can easily pull on the end that is on the back of the joint and it will come apart. Saves risking body parts with a sharp knife :)

You shouldn’t forget about hydraulics connections. Leave enough space to be able to use a tool!

Mate, when you want to undo the packing tape from a package, you simply find the overlap joint , twist the tape 180 degrees and pull the longer inner tail of the tape to separate the joint. A lot safer than using a blunt knife. Gil.

Good tip for them. I have used your method for years when I worked for Dow Corning. Found it out by mistake but glad I did.

I'd go for leg room on the toilet vs protruding out cost.

As someone that is not a fit as the two of you, maybe have someone a little larger try the fitting. You will get older and add a few pounds. Like when you have kids, the pregnancy may cause issues. Also there is a chance some one may have a sprained ankle and have a walking cast, how will that affect the toilet usage (or reach around test) Of course if the common toilet will have more room, the temporary issue can be set aside.

@@ritste1654 For any guests or crew we have aboard, they'll be on our port side using the guest head, which is a wet head, so there will be more room overall on the toilet. As far as pregnancy issues, this is news to me!! I had no idea there were children in my future?? 🤔

6:30 I would have elevated it about 2 to 3 foot and had steps up to it and then cabinets underneath. Then you could have had your back against the bulkhead

Amazing how much thought/effort goes into placement of equipment with limited space…our family recently spent a week in the BVI’s on a 40’ Lagoon Cat and my son-in-law, who’s 6’ 4”, literally could not use the toilet b/c of the limited space-thank God for the local marina facilities!

@@MJSailing Even at 6'1" my backs been stuffed up by a life of Standard low work surfaces and toilets... Like now 😬. Ideal seat orientation is such you can you can brace against a rough sea ... And get at every pipe and connection quickly without having to start tearing the boat apart. Heads stuff up regularly so do pumps and any valves.

Your 6'4" son in-law is a bit of a baby.

Everything you put in that bathroom will stickout ? If you reduce part of that wall in a section to be more flatter then you might even run water pipes as well ?

I would try raising the floor of the head enough so that the toilet can be set back more.

have you thought about when your body shape changes to a wider form? as well as a person or crew would not fit to sit. my size is 6.2 - 250lb. even in my home, I had to make changes. thank you for your videos and thoughts as to your build.

In our guest head on port side, it's a wet head, so there is more room to sit on a toilet. All our guests/crew should be very comfortable on it. And as far as ourselves in the future, I guess if we can no longer fit on our toilet, it's a slap in the face to get our butts in shape, lol.

Can’t you cut into the back wall to fit the toilet and then rebuild a cutout to bring th toilet out of the hallway

Just thinking outside the box. What if you elevated the head and included a fold down foot rest? Space is a premium. ;)

Now it's hard to see everything from the TV couch, but have you tried to have the toilet completely straight? The toilet should protrude marginally more, but provides better space for those sitting on the toilet.

I agree, as I watched and thought this is a huge vessel and yet only affording a few inches to sit on the head, hope no one gets IBS or some other need to “go” often, lol.

We did try placing it at 90 degrees to the bulkhead to sit it completely straight, but we didn't like how much it protruded into our walking space, or the feel/design in general. As Matt mentioned near the end, we finally agreed on a placement after 3 hours of moving and tweaking and measuring, so we've considered pretty much every possibility there is, lol. What we ended up with is what works best for the two of us. 😉

OK. About time 13:02. NEVER seen a full size mermaid on the bed of a sailing cat! Do tell.... It has to be inflatable somehow because the shape is just a bit too perfect and delicate to be a pillow. WHERE would something like that be stowed, unless it is an actual bed mate???

Shoulda gone with the Raritan elongated bowl head... There's something to be said for comfort when you've got 8-9ft following seas... Oh well...

I would vote for the 20” toilet height.

Since you don't have the room to slide the cross bar above (across??) the swim step into the opposite hull side, why couldn't you have the tubular bar hinged against either of the side bulkheads and be able to latch it into a lock on the opposite side?? Probably didn't explain my idea very well but as ingenious as you guys are, well!!??

Why is the toilet by the door and not on opposite wall?

Why not flip the head? Put the head on the right side of the hall (by shower) and move the vanity by the entrance? Clear access and no dealing with head protruding out into the walkway.

instead of lifelines, you could do flip up metal bars, even with a underhanging frame, like some railwaypassage booms are. depending on the placement, in the "up" position might even functions as a vertical handrail when stepping up or down.

Spoiler alert for viewers. Watch the video before reading this comment. Sorry, Matt, this makes like 2 weeks in a row seeing you turn slightly introverted with the bed & bath humor. No shame at all; by nature I’m the same way, but I admit it’s kinda funny seeing that dynamic with you all. Out of curiosity, we saw the angled options and measurements for the toilet, but how much does it stick out when raised and completely perpendicular? Does that extra clearance you gain when walking past it justify any lost vanity space? Do you feel like access to the back hoses and stuff for future replacement considerations is better by having it angled? The setup in the 444 looked nice. Great teaser at the end with the Max Cruise completed photos. I think you all know we wanted to see those before the 444, but you all know how to keep us tuning in. 😄 Take care and stay warm!

I only know this from my past military training eons ago.... but you should research something like "What is a "Reach Around""......LOL. You may wish to rename your test after that.... :).

Lift the toilet up an additional 2 inches. It will make the seat easier to get on and off.

Why can't it go up into that space behind with a step up for you feet?

Check out 3M Di noc. There are hundreds of finishes and it’s hard wearing. Can save you a lot of weight

I am a bit confused. Now that you have sealed up all the floors, how do you run all your plumbing? Seems strange to seal up all the floors as well, so you cannot inspect the bilge to make sure you are not taking on water somewhere. I guess all will be revealed as you continue the build.

Not all of our floors are sealed up. The areas where we'll be doing plumbing for the heads, as well as were the fuel tanks will be, only have the floors temporarily placed down over flanges. This makes it easier for us to move through the hulls while we're building, but they're not officially bonded down yet. 🙂

We've started with projections of a finish date, but they keep getting pushed back. First it was Spring '23, now it's Fall '23. But even at that we'll have to keep up a good full time (60/hr weeks) to hit it.

Space planning and layout...

think you should consider providing more room for the toilet as opposed to more room for the cabinet/vanity. making it to tight could make it uncomfortable.
