In this episode we continue work on our helm station - except instead of mocking up items, we're actually building pieces! Or glassing together bits and pieces to make a Frankenstien's monster version of our helm.
In last week's video we discussed how many changes in helm options have happened since Max Cruise had originally molded our pieces back in 2020. Now both our thoughts (and theirs) are to move the helm forward until it attached to bulkhead 6, the barrier between our cockpit and salon. But since the piece originally molded for our boat sits much further back, we have a lot of changes to make.
From cutting down the height, cutting off the back, and splicing in bits here and there to fit the curves of the cabin side and cabin top; and then angling it so we don't block our window, we're left with something that is custom just to us, but should feel like it's always belonged on this boat.
We hope you enjoy!

On camera, haha. Was about 5 days in real life. (Among working on sanding and fairing too of course. 😉)
I don’t know how you can see so far ahead in this build, what a monumental task.
I'm glad you guys are keeping the window by the helm. That way when I come to visit, I can make sure you're steering the boat correctly while I'm sitting comfortably inside. 😉
Hey Matt and Jess, I admire your tenacity and determination. Do you ever just get tired of all the problem solving?
God even watching Matt chop that chunk out of the roof stressed out! 😂 I couldn't imagine having to do it! Well done Matt, well done. 👏 👏

Holy smoke Matt. In modeling they call that "kitbashing". You are definitely a "boatkitbasher". Hats off to you mate. Merry Christmas to you and Jessica. 🎅 🤶
Matt’s ingenuity and creativity and energy always amaze me to no end! I am a very faithful follower and looking forward to the finished product and watching the years of cruising you have ahead!
What a puzzle with all those compound angles! Looking good.👌I hold my breathe every time you walk up and down from the helm....waiting for you to gouge your head on that sharp corner.
Merry Christmas. All the best for a fabulous New Year full of love, joy, good health, wealth, and a finished boat splash
You have certainly become masters of glassing and aligning. Well done - yet again!
Matt - you are amazing. Fun to watch a master at work.
I absolutely love what you've done here. It's clear to see the confidence you've developed through the course of this project. I'm sure there was *some* trepidation, but you just went right in there and started cutting and splicing to make it work. Well done!!!
If anyone can make that work and look good and be functional it's you Matt! No Pressure!!!!!! Great job!
What an awesome project! The extra time now will be so worth it in the end, have it your way 😊

MJ Sailing hi from Alberta, Canada. Been watching since the first truckload of major components arrived. After enjoying all of those episodes I continue to be amazed by your level as boat builders. What a special day it will be when she goes for that first test sail. Want to make sure I paid notice to all the camera and editing work well done Jessica. Hope you take some time to enjoy Xmas with family and friends.

Talk about diving in! Your level of confidence has gone way up. I like the way you fit it in. Harkin makes an electric winch with the motor mostly in the drum. It might be worth a look.

Thanks Karl. Take a look at Selden's new winches, they seem like the smallest motor/ gearbox option on the market.
Merry Christmas and happy New Year. Thank you for all the years of enjoyment you have given me. Except for all the fairing. 😁 Stay safe. ❤🙏
Loved the way you made sure all surfaces were going to finish flush when butted up. So simple yet so effective. Love your vlogs by the way.

Doubt you subscribe to the Duracell project but Matt just used Onshape cell phone app to scan his boats internal area that imported to CAD to design an area on his boat. Might be helpful as you start layout changes to the Max Cruze plans . As always I Enjoy watching your project nice work you two.

Great video
I'm sure you've already considered this, but if you cut the highest step back into the helm floor, you can make the steps much less steep, or add one more step. Steep, high steps can be difficult in big seas.
@MJSailing

Ha! I've been thinking about thay for weeks too. It was also allow us to keep the boom a little further down and increase sail area. Y only fear is how will it be to work a winch that's higher than waist level. I know a lot of boats do that, but it doesn't seem real ergonomic.
@dansegelov305
6 ай бұрын
@@MJSailing . You could keep the whole helm floor the same, but just recess the highest step (below the helm floor) into it by 6-7 inches. It would just shallow the steps angle a little bit. So your first step down from the helm is cut into the inboard side of the helm floor, then the next step down is the first of your new steps. I hope that makes sense.
Hello there hope you both had a great Christmas and happy new year
Thanks!

Look at you go! Damm
Hack, cut, fit, glue, repeat. It will be interesting to see what it turns out to be.
Mads from Saillife found an electric winch where the motor is contained within the winch. So no motor to enclose below the winch.
I’ve watched you guys for years now but the one thought I’ve had in my mind over the past year or so watching you build your own boat is “would I want to be in the middle of the Atlantic during a storm on a boat I built myself” my answer is no.

@@jeremyduncan3654 I have watched them from the beginning and appreciate the rebuilds of the past, but this is a whole different animal. Temperature differentials, material and bonding requirements. Merry Christmas from OZ take a break
I used a hydraulic system. It also connected to the Autopilot. All problems solved. Only thing to remember was that when the autopilot is engaged, the helm is disconnected, and to regain the helm one must first switch off the autopilot. That is why the switch must be large, obvious, and adjacent to the helm station with a notice explaining that the helm is disconnected hydraulically when the hydraulic autopilot is in use. Were this not the case, the helm would spin when the autopilot attempts to correct the course. The autopilot uses a 12 volts electric hydraulic pump, the manual option uses the pump attached to the helm itself. never had a problem with the system all the time we used it.
👍
Good Video, thanks for sharing. All the background noise in the first 1/2 of the Video... Was that the tent flapping in the wind or was Jessica doing something of camera?
@MJSailing
6 ай бұрын
Lots of tent noise! We keep earbuds in at all times to combat the constant noise.
if you left the helm proud you could have used it to attach a dodger unless you have other plains. is rain water going to drain on to the stairs
@MJSailing
6 ай бұрын
Leaving it proud for a water dam was my first idea too, but the winch line feed wants a lower lead and unless I then elevate the clutches too, there would be overrun issues with the lines.

how much will this catamaran cost? Greetings from Iceland
Where are all the electronics going to go in that helm station? Are they just going to be on the top of the roof?

The chartplotter will be on the cabintop. The engine and hybrid garage will be in the helm pedestal. I'd have loved to integrate the chartplotter, but only so much space.

This doesn’t work?
I think your steps are too tall, not big enough for feet and I heard no mention of a handrail. Safe dimensions, etc. for steps has long been established in dwellings and businesses and I'm sure they are appropriate for water-craft. I hesitate to mention this because everything else you've done is amazingly impressive both in design and amount of labor. I don't want to criticize you at all.

We've measured every available catamaran at boat shows, and none follow the recommended 7 to 10 ratio of a home. Same as a companionway in a monohull, we need to treat it more like a ladder than a staircase.
