Catalonia's Last Bullfight - Al Jazeera World

After years of lobbying by animal rights campaigners, in July 2011 the Catalan Parliament voted by a small majority to ban bullfighting. The Catalonia region of north-east Spain banned bullfighting as a spectator sport with effect from January 1, 2012.
In the evening of September 25, 2011, 20,000 spectators from Spain and around the world were packed into Barcelona's Monumental Bullring for the last bullfight in the Spanish region.
But the debate for and against is still very much alive.
In September 2016, there were demonstrations in Madrid after a matador was killed by a bull, sparking calls for a Spanish nationwide ban. Meanwhile in October, bullfighting supporters petitioned Spain's constitutional court to have the ban overturned, arguing the Catalan parliament had powers only to regulate the sport, not ban it. But the court deferred its decision.
I think anyone who wants to be a toreador loves the bull more than his girlfriend. Bullfighting is his life. That's what he wants.
Luis Cantero, bullfighter trainer
The ban polarises Catalan society and provokes strong feelings on both sides. Many are glad it's in place, feeling that bullfighting has no part in Catalan culture.
But it has also affected those most closely associated with the sport - the matadors and bull breeders, whose lives depend entirely on the sport and who argue passionately for its survival. They're angry at the loss of their way of life.
"The bull is my life and they've taken it away; or at least my life in Barcelona. In terms of bullfighting, I'm dead, dead here in Barcelona," says bullfighter Serafin Marin.
They dismiss claims by animal rights campaigners and argue that a handful of votes should not have decided the issue and ended six centuries of Spanish tradition.
"You can't prove the animals are tortured ... None of these guys who want to be bullfighters, would harm a beetle ... There's no such thing as torture," says Luis Cantero, a bullfighting trainer.
Supporters also emphasise the part bullfighting plays in the Spanish economy.
"Bullfighting is the second biggest spectacle in Spain after football. It generates wealth and many jobs. The tax on tickets sales alone generates 50 million euros. Bullfighting creates jobs too. It's one of the driving forces of the Spanish economy," argues bullfighter Fran Vazquez.
At the opposite end of the spectrum are the campaigners who lobbied so long for the ban and who used the constitutional process to draft a new law banning the sport.
"The polls published by the media show that the majority of Catalan society was in favour of banning bullfighting. The Popular Legislative Initiative channelled all the forces within Catalan society. In fact, if I'm not wrong, we got more than 180,000 signatures when only 50,000 were needed," says Josep Puigdengolas, an animal rights campaigner.
Some also see a political dimension to the debate. Catalans can often see themselves as having a separate identity from the rest of Spain. They associate bullfighting with General Franco's long dictatorship in the mid-20th century - and see it as having been foisted on them by central government in Madrid. These feelings of resentment did not pass with the restoration of democracy in the late 1970s and still underlie the tension between Barcelona and the capital.
"It's not about animal rights but about politics," says Vazquez. "Catalonia has banned bullfighting because the province, or some Catalan politicians want to separate Catalonia from Spain. What could be more representative of Spain than bullfighting?"
But Carlos Lopez Perez, a member of Libera!, a Spanish non-profit animal rights organisation, disagrees. "Entertainment that abuses animals no longer fits the morals of the age. The Catalan parliament took into account what the people wanted and legislated independently. We consider this activity outdated. Regardless of whether it's Spanish or Catalan, society today finds it clearly abusive. Killing an animal is incompatible with modern and civilised Catalan society."
So, like the bull, the debate rages on - with some thinking the ban has as much to do with Spanish regional politics and Catalan autonomy as it does with animal rights.

A fighting bull gets to live a natural life out in the meadows with a bunch of cows for six years. A beef steer gets castrated, maybe spends a year on grass, then shipped to a stinking feedlot for months for 'fattening up'. If you complain about bullfighting, you had better not be eating beef, or any meat.

Totally agree that a fighting bull has a much better fate than its hapless brethren raised only for meat. And if it's lucky enough to win a fight it will not be sent into the arena again and will only be used for breeding.

It would be a different story if the matadors didn’t tire the bull out first to gain an advantage, it would be a different story if multiple matadors didn’t work together to west the bull down, it would be a different story if the matador didn’t have his buddies rush to his aid if he gets knocked down and roughed up or killed. Nobody comes to the bulls aid. It’s about torturing these animals until their inevitable deaths. It’s not a fair fight and one side has to die for the joy of the other.

@@hunterphillips9032 Fair fight? How about the bull weighing over half a ton and the matador ten times less? What are you saying here, that the matador, if gored, should be left to die in the arena without anyone coming to his aid? It's not like the bull is tied down and tortured without the possibility of defending itself. This is a dangerous activity requiring great courage and skill, not anyone can do it. And these bulls are bred and raised specifically for this purpose, without bullfights there would be no reason for their existence. Cruelty? How about killing animals in the slaughterhouse? Are you really a vegetarian?

@@lucianene7741What a dumb a$$ statement yes cattle are raised to die for food a very quick death. Compared to the bulls who are prepared to enter a ring to fight. So you can let me know of all the things I'll state that are wrong. Bulls are light restricted, basically complete darkness To further restricte the eye sight grease or Vaseline is put in thier eyes.yea yea I know not anymore BS. So then the bull enter the ring and what 2 men on horses that are protected stab the bull in the neck sounds like a fair fight. Then you have what 3 more guys stab the bull 6 more times. Then the hero comes out after the bull is confused exhausted to act like he did something. It's not close to the same thing. Yes both were raised to die and feed people 1 took a bolt to the brain the other endored 12 hours of torture. Although there are obviously animal cruelty issues involved, I feel extremely privileged to have watched a bullfight in Barcelona's bull fighting ring. This was back in 1983 when I was Inter-Railing. We had no money, so we bought tickets in the cheap part of the stand, "Sol" - in the bit exposed to the sunshine. I had no idea what to expect, but I was completely mesmerised by the art of it all. Animals died, but I was fascinated by how different the matadors were, and how the best one came on last. Don't get me wrong, we shouldn't go back to those days, but I feel privileged to have witnessed it in its time. I can still recall the smell and feel of the old bull ring and its iron turnstiles even after 40 years, and I wouldn't recognise the bull ring now that it has been retired and turned into a different venue. It was 40 years ago, but I sat on the edge of my seat, and I savoured every second of it (not the same as 'enjoying' it). Yes, it was brutal, but there was an art to it, and it is hard to explain unless you have witnessed it.

I could find the same interest as Americans find in football or boxing. But I'm glad it has stopped at least in one place. Humans can torture themselves if they choose. An animal does not choose to be tortured by humans. It us time for culture to rise above human depravity towards others unlike themselves, animals, persons of other races, other genders, etc. Kudos to Catalonia!

I am not Spanish and there is no bullfighting in this country, so I guess I have no fish to fry in this matter. I find it sad however that a 600 year old tradition is being slowly destroyed, for what? Political correctness? Yes the bulls suffer pain, mostly in the last 5 minutes of the fight, but at least they can fight. The cattle we eat often don't live free-range like they do, are not bred strong like they are, they just live miserable lives in industrialized agriculture until a hammer to the head puts them out of their lifelong misery. Bullfighting bulls experience cruelty at the end of their lives, steers for food might experience it all their lives. Otherwise the rest of their lives it is infinitely preferable to live as a bullfighting bull, and in some sense preferable to die as one. If you have to go down, go down fighting. Some political types will not be content until it is illegal for a man to live as a man. When bullfighting ends, it will also be illegal for a bull to live as a bull, rather than as a product in a production line. That day will be a sad one. I myself would not harm a bug unless I had to, but I know cruelty is part of life, and I eat meat and am not going to stop so I am implicated in that cruelty. That's life.

You may still disagree with it after looking at the other side of the argument, which is fine and valid, but try to consider that this may be more humane than many mass producing live stock farms. The bulls live free lives with little to no human contact. When the day comes for them to fight, they actually have a fighting chance and can defend themselves and even survive the encounter. They have far better odds than compared to livestock who may or may not have a good quality of life. I’d personally prefer to live a life of freedom and then have one singular moment of struggle with the potential to live, than a life of containment and potential mistreatment with no chance of survival or freedom. I first saw the bulls in 1962 at the Plaza Monumental in Barcelona. I was 14 and I knew I was in the presence of something extraordinary. I have since been to many corridas both in Spain and in Mexico. Some moments have remained with me for decades. I am an aficionado of la gran fiesta nacional de España and I have even dreamt of the bulls several times. It saddened me when half the Catalan nationalists voted to ban the bulls at the Monumental where I had my introduction to la corrida. The art of la corrida is not only Spanish but Catalan also, and Mexican, Colombian, Peruvian, Venezuelan, and French. Catalan produced many good toreros and Barcelona was the only city which at one time had two arenas where First Class corridas were held. It is ignorant to equate it only with Madrid. In the Basque Country there are many corridas and el País Basco is no more Spanish than Catalonia. Pamplona is famous for the bulls. The Catalan ban is what is to be expected when narrow nationalism raises its ugly mentality. The politicians who banned the corrida are no different from the autocratic Franco who is long dead.

And they stick the long barbs in. Bleeding and weakening the bull. Then the main matador takes over and kills it after it has been stabbed numerous times and fought by many people. How a matador thinks he is so brave when the bull is tortured by so many is beyond me. They are truly cowards. And should a bull kills a matador, and wins, he still loses. If banning bullfight to take out the "unnecessary" suffering it's the best.....why we don't banned other activities....because the campaign against bullfighting sell and others no?

It’s their culture. No matter how you feel about it. I personally think it’s a bit messed up. But it’s not my country or culture to judge. The Spaniards have been doing this 3 times longer than the history of my country. Who am I to judge? If the Catalonians themselves ban it, then so be it. But if they decided to continue bull fighting, it would be none of my business. It’s not like I’m forced to participate or watch it.

As pastoralists became integrated with cities, sport was necessary for evidence of man being civilized. The first sports involved the use of animals. A civilized man had to wear textiles, eat domestic food, and play sports, and I cannot remember the fourth requirement to separate the civilized man from the wild man. The inflatable ball is fairly new to civilization.

Bullfighting is cruel but it's much more noble than killing in a slaughterhouse. It's beautiful and the bull lives an amazing life and his meat is eaten in special restaurants not for waste. It's one of the most beautiful performances I've seen but couldn't watch the whole thing. They should let the Spanish have it. These few bulls die in a less cruel way than slaughterhouse animals by thousands each day.

Animals in slaughterhouses are shot in the head and drop dead instantly, from a captive bolt gun inserting a bolt into the brain, destroying it. Then they are drained of blood, ensuring death, when they are already unconscious. These bulls are brought out into a loud arena, chased and taunted and speared multiple times - how is that in any way, shape or form, ethical compared to slaughterhouses?

Sorry but not all animals are despatched in a humane manner in an abattoir, animals killed for halal and kosha supply are bled to death without any stunning at all, cattle are forced into a crush turned upside down and then have their throats cut and are bled out until unconscious. Whether or not the animal is actually dead before it is eviscerated would depend on the efficiency of the actual process, smaller animals such as goats, sheep, chickens, and rabbits are just restrained by hand and dispatched with a slice across the throat.

I saw bullfight in 1973 when I was 10 years old. I felt sorry for the bull. I cried for it. Now I cry for the end of a part of the Spanish culture. For 600 years bullfighting was a part of the culture. Is it worse to kill a bull when we eat meat every day? Or is it worse to take away all bullfighting meant to the Spanish culture? I am torn on this issue.
