🇦🇲 Armenia: Life in a Suitcase | Al Jazeera World

Ойын-сауық

As the Armenian economy continues to struggle, as do its people. Over a third of the country's population lives under the poverty line and the price of common goods shows no sign of moderation.
Hundreds of thousands of Armenians have immigrated to neighbouring and far away countries, and although the border with Turkey has been closed since 1993, many continue to make the short journey over - the proximity from home a draw-factor for those who can't bear to move further away.
This film tells the poignant story of two Armenian women unable to survive at home and who leave their families to join the many economic migrants with hopes of a better life for their families.
Anahit Donoyan lost thirty family members in an Armenian earthquake, after her husband passed away at a mere 50 years old. When she first moved to Istanbul, manual labour was how she earned her keep.
"I worked in a factory and at a restaurant. I cleaned hallways at night. I took care of babies. I would steam corn and sell it by the sea. Then I was a housekeeper. All kinds of work. I'm not ashamed because I was providing for my children," says Donoyan.
Now, too old for such physical roles, she ekes out a living selling Armenian food products to other immigrants, not unlike herself, out of a suitcase on the streets of Istanbul.
She has lived and worked illegally in Turkey for 18 years, avoided trouble with the authorities and still tries to support her family in Armenia and Russia.
"I've been setting up a stall and selling my goods here for five years. No one's ever asked me what I was doing here. Never. Everyone's fond of me and I'm fond of them."
Karine Galstyan is also Armenian and came to Turkey looking for work in 2004. After marrying a Turkish man, her residency and work status are a lot more stable, allowing her easier transport in and out of Turkey and Armenia.
"It was very difficult for me. I would lie in bed at night and my mind was in Armenia with my children. But, as a mother, I suffered to make sure my children were taken care of," she remembers.
Galstyan buys cheap clothes in Istanbul and takes them in a suitcase to sell in Armenia a couple of times a month, earning around $300 [≈ cost of PS3 gaming system, 2011] a trip. Where children's shoes can cost as much as $21 in Armenia, Istanbul affords Galstyan a business opportunity with commodities at a fraction of the price, at as little as $2 per item.
In spite of the distance from their families, the intensity at which they work and the routine lives they lead trying to make ends meet, the two women are happy to be able to support the ones they love and support themselves. A feeling that trumps the desire to be at home.
"I love Istanbul. People love a place if they have a good life and are making a good living," confirms Galstyan.

As an Armenian, I want to thank everyone for the nice and empathetic comments in this comments section. I appreciate you guys 🥺❤️ Special thanks to the super nice comments from Azerbaidjan and Turkey. We should be like brothers and sisters, but instead are driven by the propaganda and hate spread by the governments. Great to see that not everyone is fooled by the these lies. Thank you 💖

There is no homeless or hungry person in Armenia. These women just want to make little money. Politics allows Armenians to make tons of money in Russia and send back to home. I send my mom around this age $ 2,000 every month, I make that much every 2-3 days. 90% Armenian men take care of their relatives from Russia and USA.

It breaks my heart to see that old lady who has to work and live illegally in Istanbul to support her children. it should be the other way around where they work to support her. it's a heart breaking documentary to watch. Armenia is such a tiny country and it does not even exist on some maps, or if it does, you can't even see it because the name and land are so small that Turkey is taking all the attention. The documentary shows that 1/3 of Armenians living in Armenia are in poverty, that's very heart breaking. that's 1 out of every 3 persons. very very very heartbreaking.

These women are brave and hard-working, but a lot of people in Armenia are lazy as well. I noticed it while I was over there. Communism has made us somewhat lazy, entitled and complacent. This is why I despise communism. we did get some benefits from the Soviet rule and the country did get a lot of industry and infrastructure, but I feel like it somewhat killed our natural disposition towards hard work and perseverance which we need to rebuild.

Really enjoyed watching this honest documentary, as disturbing as it is to see how lonely they are . I have met women like this in Greece doing the same kind of thing for a living , travelling back and forth constantly.. their strength and determination reminds me of our own Irish women I grew up with , my aunt's , grandmother and my mother still youthful and caring for the whole clan in her 70s. Women who live for their families and their roots. I feel shallow and ashamed of myself and for all I take for granted when I consider the sacrifices so many women have to make. A very moving programme.

It really bothers me when aging mothers are supporting their children. Unless the grown child is disabled, this should actually be a shame on those adult children. Even if this aging mother can help support herself, that should be more than enough. I would love the interviewers to have questioned these adult children on their dependency on their aging parent. In the end, I cried for that wonderful brave woman gratefully eating her lunch alone.

Armenia has a very sad history (particularly w/ Turkey and Russia) but they are an excellent, hard working, friendly people still. These guys are emblematic. We dont' know how easy we have it in the West/USA. Great work as always from Al Jaz. If not for them we in the US would know nothing about the outside world as our own media hasn't been told "other countries" exist and our (esp. TV) news is pitched at children and simpletons.

Al Jazeera please do a honest documentary on the Greek and Armenian Genocide that would be a very intriguing documentary to do as I am told and have read up that many young Turkish people are not even aware of the genocide and they are not told about it or not much mentioned even at school on this topic. I loved you documentary and I want to compliment you all .I also loved the fact that none of these people had a bad word to say and they were so grateful for living and working in Turkey as they have seen poverty in their own country .

The border is still closed, the Turkish government still refuses to accept the genocide despite the fact that Russia, US, most of Europe and 99% of scholars confirmed it, and last year the government supplied weapons and Syrian jihadis to Azerbaijan. I don't think all Turks hate Armenians or that all Armenians hate Turks, but if you gave Erdogan the opportunity to destroy Armenia and connect with Azerbaijan, he would take it, and if you gave Armenia the chance to return to their lands in Erzurum, Van, Bitlis, Diyarbekir, Kharput, and Sivas, they would take it.

urkey is a nation straddling eastern Europe and western Asia with cultural connections to ancient Greek, Persian, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman empires. Cosmopolitan Istanbul, on the Bosphorus Strait, is home to the iconic Hagia Sophia, with its soaring dome and Christian mosaics, the massive 17th-century Blue Mosque and the circa-1460 Topkapı Palace, former home of sultans. Ankara is Turkey’s modern capital.

Im muslim and have many Armenians freinds in the US. Their culture has many similarities to ours. But i do not understand the obsession with the genocide. Nobody alive today was a victim of it and nobody alive perpetrated it. And it wont be the last genocide that takes place on earth either. The comment sections are so toxic that it feels like people are not against genocide as a principal but rather are upset that it happened to them instead of them doing it to others. And insulting the Turks by saying they come from Mongolia??? What does that even mean? Is mongolia not a place that God created as well? People are all people. Some are good, some are bad. We should respect everyone that shows us respect and forget this nationalistic and ethnic pride. Becuase guess what, everyone else has it also. And it seems the more corrupt a country, the greater the delusion of how great they are. Live a good life for you and your family, respect everyone, and forget all this cultural baggage, while at the same time not being ashamed of who you are and where you came from.

Lol agreed with the video being a little bit too exaggerated. Been to Istanbul & met many successful Armenians, but to answer your question about why the would go to Turkey is they wanna look for jobs with better pay that they think they would find. The average monthly income in Armenia is $342 which is not much and the main cause of poverty there is bc it's landlocked country, the borders with Turkey and Azerbaijan are closed, and there is no sea port, so all imports and exports must go through Georgia or Iran.

Before Khojaly was Armenian's people massacre in Sumgait and Baku, after Khojaly was massacre of Armenians in Maragha. You sow only example of Armenian "barbarity", but for you is just normal, then as answer of every political depends from Armenian side in Ottoman empire or in Soviet Azerbaijan begans pogroms and killings of Armenians, as sacond class people - it's absolutly normally, reall? You never can recognize, that Armenians have political right;s, that Armenian's have such rights., as Greeks, Bulgarians, Albanians and so. How many countries occupaied Armenians5 how many nations can say, that Armenians killed their grandfathers, seized their lands and so? Look in all countries in region two housand years ago, housand years ago and now. Where was Turkey in 200 BC? Where was Azerbaijan 200 BC. 301 AD or 1000 AD5 then Armenians built Ani capital or Dadivanq monastery? No Azerbaijan and no Turkey in this region in ancient time. Your are invaders. It's not good, and not bad- but only you seiized the land's of natives of Anatolia and Caucasus- the land's of Assirian's, Armenians. Georgians. Kurds. Arbs. Dagestani's and so. Turkey is the largest country in region, Azerbaijan is more large, then such ancient nation's, as Armenians and Georgians. It, of corse, in your logic, mean, what some nations have more right's to keep other teritories, and the only option of Armenians is living under Turkish or Azeris rule. And if Armenians don't want to be a medieval raya's, Armenians are invaders, and their history is myth. If it is your truth- I wish you and your nation only such answers from all of your neighbours.
